2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

Whatever happens, the status-quo cannot continue with QB coaching. I used to think we didn't have a deep threat, but now I think it's more about Barrett not seeing the field (so hard to tell though on an ESPN broadcast). He's definitely not as accurate as 2014 and doesn't anticipate routes opening up as well. He just moves to his check down as soon as possible. His completion percentage isn't too far off from 2014 or 2015, but it feels like the amount of passes behind the LOS has gone way up and is padding that stat. Haven't found a passing chart for a previous year yet to confirm that.

Versus 2014 he's down in completion percentage from 64.6 to 61.8 and, IMO far more significantly, in yards per attempt from 9.0 to 7.0. In fairness, Devin Smith was special as a deep threat and the 2014 OL was superior, but 2 full yards less per attempt is still a big deal to me.

Buckeye Breakdown: Man Versus Zone

In this edition of Buckeye Breakdown: Man Versus Zone, we take a closer look at the evolution of J.T. Barrett throughout The Game. Let us also collectively scratch our heads as to why Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown went away from their strength as a defense (Man Coverage), which coincidentally was a weakness for Barrett on Saturday, in lieu of a soft zone which provided a struggling offense a much needed spark.

Comments in that thread are saying that he struggles to anticipate where routes are going against man coverage.

My question is how can the QB not know where the routes are going? If that's true, then...I don't even know what to think.

Unless they're talking about WRs making their own adjustments and they're not on the same page as JT. Wouldn't think these guys would have the freedom to do that yet though.

Rewatching the highlights of The Game makes me think that no matter the play calling, the O is just not there this year. OL struggles cause an already hesitant and inaccurate Barrett to be even more off target. The high slant to Samuel was a TD if thrown accurately, but we've seen Barrett struggle to place those throws all year.

Barrett might be a limited thrower in terms of arm strength, but there are things he can fix to be much better in the pocket. I think that only starts with a new QB coach and hopefully a much improved WR corp.

The inconsistent accuracy, even when not under pressure, is what's most perplexing/frustrating to me. There were some Bauserman-type throws on Saturday. Maybe my memory is just a little off, but wasn't consistent accuracy his thing in 2014?

One thing that would have been huge is if Jalin decided to come back this year. Having Brown be the #2 guy instead of the #1 is probably where he should be. And Jalin probably could have worked himself into a mid-round guy with all the targets he would have gotten. And while he doesn't fix the lack of a deep ball, he surely improves it.

Anybody know if Torrance gibson would be eligible to come back for the Postseason? His suspension was for fall semester, which ends in 2-3 weeks. While he would be so rusty and not in game shape, it would be interesting to see if he could see the field in VERY limited duty purely as a deep ball guy.
