2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

Yea but who knows with these scrimmages it could be more about seeing what certain players are about. Xavier might not even have tried

In all honesty, "not even have tried" has never been in Xavier's vocabulary. I really can't see them thinking they are so big-time that they can afford to go through the motions. They've never been a team to coast, and that isn't Coach Mack's MO, either.

He sells a DVD in which he touts:

-
Coach Mack teaches the defensive basics using individual and team drills that will:

  • Create extreme ball pressure
  • Keep the ball out of the middle of the court
  • Force the offense to take contested jump shots “away from the box”
  • Develop excellent help defense and improve communication on defense
-
It's a good sign.

I doubt the result had anything to do with effort. I am sure both teams tried things in the scrimmage that they wouldn't in a game that counted. Blueitt didn't play and Macura played about half the game. With Sumner leaving early for the NBA, the team we faced isn't close to the team Xavier was last year. I believe Macura was the only returning starter that started in this scrimmage.

Here we go again. Give Ohio State a little credit and then tell us how bad Xavier is this year compared to last. Well, I guess in your mind, at least Ohio State went down to Xavier and played but that is about it. Nice……

I see once again your post doesn't contain any facts or counter point, just angst. Seemed adding a little dose of reality to the talk of beating a top 20 team and that it was a big win was necessary. ITs not just that Blueitt is their best player, its that he carried them at the end of the season last year after Sumners injury. It would have been like taking DAR off of our '14 team or Turner off our '09 team.
Its certainly better to hear that we won than lost. Just not sure there is a whole lot to take from just hearing the final score. Now, if we had some actual reports from the scrimmage, like CJ shot the ball well and had 8 assists, or Potter showed some post moves, etc. that kinda stuff might give some insight on player improvement and projection for the season.

So do you want tickets to the Final Four or nah?!

Not any time soon. Probably wouldn't look for first round tickets for a couple of years. Just gonna be rough with only 1 PG.
I guess I just do not understand the point you are trying to get across regarding the Xavier scrimmage and the fact that we only have 1 "pure" PG this season. Every team loses players from a prior years team and just because Xavier lost their top performing player does not make the Ohio State scrimmage win any less of an effort. Even you have to admit that a scrimmage is a scrimmage and some coaches do not even play their best players for very long in a scrimmage. The fact that this is almost a total rebuilding year for Ohio State basketball should make you feel pretty good about the direction of the team even though it was just a scrimmage.

I mean Holtmann does not even have all of his type of players on the team so is going to take a while. He tried to get some PG's to commit but it was awful late in the process but I think that you know that and I do not know why you have to criticize him because the team only has 1 PG.

It will be interesting to see what you say after they play Wooster because I do not know if their coach has all their players from last season back or what is going on with their program.

- Xavier is ranked top 20
- people get excited about hearing that we beat a preseason top 20 team in a scrimmage
- some don't realize that their best player (pre-season 2nd/3rd team all-american) didn't play and their second best player played about half the game, so I pointed it out.
- someone still don't get why that would have an impact on the score or that a scrimmage is coached much differently than a game.

The PG position is important (probably most important position) to a teams success. Having only one on your team is clearly going to cause issues and be a factor in most games. How we got here or whose fault that is, is irrelevant and not something I've brought up, but it would be naive to ignore the problem completely. I agree completely that its going to take a while for us to get back to the top of the conference or make any noise in the post season.

I doubt I will have much to say after the Wooster game. They are an above average DIII school.

I am terrified having Tate running the offense from out top.

Still very excited to see what Holtmann can put together. This team will win fans over, I promise.
