2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

our backcourt is thin as can be and the talent level is questionable.

we don't have elite talent at any other position to make up for that.

some of our more talented guys are true frosh.

this roster is only in a half-way acceptable place BECAUSE Holtmann took over and flipped Young and added Jallow. Losing a PG like Beverly from a backcourt that could not afford to lose anything kind of hurt a little but adding Dakich offset that a bit since Dakich is far more experienced at this level.

we are picked in the bottom quarter or third of the conference by most pre-season predictors. again, the state of the roster can't really be pinned on Holtmann, and he did what he could at a very late juncture to improve it. given that, I don't know why anyone would be expecting better than NIT or trying to hold Holtmann accountable for potentially not making the Dance when basically no reasonable person thinks he's been dealt the right cards for that to happen right away. it is a transition season, for crying out loud.

I will be happy if we make the NIT. if we do better than that, I will be shocked and utterly thrilled.

it will still be challenging, but I hope for a NCAA Tourney appearance starting in 2018-2019. And an upward trajectory from there as Holtmann gets his guys in the program and some of them gain experience.

kaleb: 16 & 7 in only 15 minutes... because he fouled out... against wooster.

potter had 3 fouls (edit: in 16 minutes). it's going to be a challenge for kaleb and potter to end games with fewer than 5 fouls apiece. i bet we see coach working on zone before gonzaga, and i expect that we'll see some rotations excluding both post players. young's quick development will be key. the problem with going short is that we'll still be slow and unathletic with questionable outside shooting. going short can work if you play up-tempo. that is decidedly not what we'll be, though.

much of our season hinges on kaleb and potter not being foul-happy. the sooner we learn how to run zone effectively, the better.
