2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

- Xavier is ranked top 20
- people get excited about hearing that we beat a preseason top 20 team in a scrimmage
- some don't realize that their best player (pre-season 2nd/3rd team all-american) didn't play and their second best player played about half the game, so I pointed it out.
- someone still don't get why that would have an impact on the score or that a scrimmage is coached much differently than a game.

The PG position is important (probably most important position) to a teams success. Having only one on your team is clearly going to cause issues and be a factor in most games. How we got here or whose fault that is, is irrelevant and not something I've brought up, but it would be naive to ignore the problem completely. I agree completely that its going to take a while for us to get back to the top of the conference or make any noise in the post season.

I doubt I will have much to say after the Wooster game. They are an above average DIII school.

I don't think there is anything wrong with getting "excited" I'm sure everyone here recognizes it was just a scrimmage but it's good to hear good things about the team after the past few seasons.

As far as there not being much to be said.

First 4 games are against schlubs too

Robert Morris 14-19 in 16-17
Radford 14-18 in 16-17
Texas Southern 23-12 (SWAC) in 16-17
Northeastern 15-16 in 16-17

Nothing much to be said until they take on Gonzaga in game 5 on November 23.....just hope to take care of business like they should against that group of teams and look like a more competent basketball team as a whole than the past few years. That's what i'm looking for in these sisters of the poor games.

None of us saw the game, so obviously we really can't draw any conclusions about how everyone looked. Word is we won, and Xavier is not going to go through the motions.

- Xavier had the number 11 recruiting class in 247 rankings for 2017.
- Paul Scruggs and Naji Marshall are big-time recruits.
- Quentin Goodin was a big-time recruit in 2016 who we offered, and he got lots of playing time for Xavier as a Freshman.
- Tyrique Jones was a big-time 2016 recruit who played major minutes and had big production as a frosh.
- They have 6'10" grad-transfer Kerem Kanter ( younger brother of Enes Kanter) who produced well at Wisconsin-GB.

Etc., etc., etc. Xavier is a potential top-10 basketball team this year with Blueitt and Macura in the line-up. Without them, they are still a top-25 team. This Buckeye team should have lost by 7 to 10 points to this team, even without Blueitt playing. We did just the opposite. :oh::io:

Man, I almost forgot my guy Paul Scruggs went to X. That kid is a scorer. Trust me on Indiana recruits that I get to watch in person. He will be a stud.

Anyway, middle-man OHSF signing in again- winning this scrimmage is cooler than losing it, but it doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot long term. Buckeye Bball will still be better than okay this year. That's all. Everything can be true on both sides without extremes.

Go Bucks

I think some are getting the wrong impression. I'm excited to see how this team plays and develops. I don't expect much in the way of results for a few years because the roster doesn't have good balance. I don't see any reason to be excited over a score from a scrimmage game. A few years back we heard how Sully/Craft dominated against Baylor or how DAR came out of the scrimmage with everyone proclaiming him a one and done talent. We didn't hear any such reports from this game so I personally see little to take away from a score when their DAR/Turner didn't play.

Which tourney? I'd give us a 50-50 shot at making the NIT.

If KBD and Tate can stay healthy, Potter can take a step and we can get legit contributions out of the talented freshmen, I think we can make the tournament. Just for avoidance of doubt, my conclusion largely rests on the realization that the bubble is Charmin-soft with the expansion to 68 teams. There's some real garbage that's been getting into the dance the past few years after the size of the participants increased.

Fair point about the bubble being pretty weak. I don't think we have enough experience or depth at key positions (1,2 and 5). To make the dance, CJ is going to have to have a heck of a season. IF we make the NIT, I think it will be a successful first year for Holtmann.

Making the NIT is not successful. That's par for the course for this group the last few years. A well-coached Buckeye team last year was easily NIT material, and should have been NCAA-bound. Assuming Holtmann can bring some new life, this team should absolutely make the NCAA.

CJ Jackson is a legitimate 1, as he proved at the end of last year.
Kam is solid, if streaky at 2.
Tate and KBD should get B1G honors.
Wesson should be serviceable.
Potter should get 2 or 3 threes a game, besides growing as an interior presence.
All three freshmen show the ability to give a solid 10+ minutes a game if needed.

Assuming we just shelled out 24 million dollars for a top talent as a coach, I will be disappointed if we DON'T make the NCAA. We are thin at back-up PG, that's about it. This team can win 20 games.

Robert Morris, Radford, Texas Southern, Northeastern, Willam-Mary, Appalachian State, Citadel and Miami are 8 wins. Clemson game is in Columbus. Gonzaga and UNC are likely L's.

A 9-2 Buckeye team in the B1G could still get 11 from the B1G schedule plus one in the tourney. We get Rutgers and Penn State twice, and Nebraska at home. If this team is up for it, we can take that step back toward being respectable again right off the bat.

It would be a success this year to make the NIT.

- define "legitimate" pg? Meaning that he is a pg, is one of the top pgs in the conference, or somewhere in between? I think he's a very average b1g pg. He shot well the last 4 games or so, but poorly for the prior 25, so which is more likely the baseline? His shot is a little on the ugly side (too much arc, too little rotation), so I think he's probably a 33% shooter or so from three. He handles the ball fine and has a good feel for the game, but isn't a creator. We also have no backup PG (it seems our first choice as a backup is a guy that played the 4 last year)
- kam is streaky and hasn't shown the ability to do much on offense other than shoot. Now, if he shoots the ball very well and consistently, then it would help elevate the team, but as you say, he's streaky and I don't really expect to see much different than we've seen the past 3 years.
- I really like Tate as a player, but if he can't shoot, he hurts the offensive flow and makes us an easier team to defend. He's probably the top guy on the team that can get is own points and you know you will always get great effort. I have no idea what to expect from kbd. I think Holts style should suit him better and unlike some, I think seeing him move more to the high and low post will be a good move.
- I assume the wesson you are referring to is kaleb and I have no idea what to expect from him. He has a good feel for the game and good all around skills, but his lack of athleticism concerns me. I think he will have issues with fouls and defending.

you didn't mention young or jallow and these are a couple of guys that I'm interested to see. Unfortunately they are playing behind our 2 best players.

again, the big concern is our roster makeup. We have 1 pg, 1 sg and 2 centers. Only having 2 guards on the roster is going to be an issue in a lot of games. I think we are going to face a lot of defensive pressure and the least bit of foul trouble at any of these 3 positions causes us major problems.

I won't say this team can't win 20 games. The non-conf has some challenging games, but a good number of cupcakes. you did leave out a couple of games we will get in the pk80 tourney. I think we go 1-2 out there, lose to unc and them 1, maybe 2 more in the non-conf. The collection of college basketball experts have us pegged to be 11th or 12th in conference (high of 9, low of 13, median of 12). That would mean they are projecting us to have somewhere around 6-8 wins in conference. could we win more? sure, but right now, the expectations are for a bit of a rough go in the conference.

- Jackson got better because he gained confidence, starts, and experience. He's legit, as in, I'm not worried about his performance at the spot like I was last year when he was just coming out of JUCO. Yeah, he should be fine as a run-of-the-mill B1G PG.

- The Wesson I referred to was Andre, as evidenced by my mentioning getting 10 minutes a game from the three freshmen. They would be Kaleb Wesson, Musa Jallow, and Kyle Young. I expect those three freshmen to show flashes of being more than serviceable.

- Potter and Jackson have to make strides for us, but I think they can without the dysfunction around them we had last year.

- I will grant that we have too many 3's. You could argue that Tate, KBD, Andre Wesson, Kyle Young, and Musa Jallow are proper 3's.

- For us to only have 6 wins in conference, while facing Nebraska, Penn State and Rutgers 5 times would be an embarrassment.

- Making the NIT, I repeat, would not be a success. It would be par for the course from the last two years. I'm expecting more than that from Holtmann.

(If kaleb doesn't play 20 mpg, I will be shocked. Potter has no low post game (didn't have one in hs either) and wasn't much of a rebounder last year (decent enough hands to catch what comes to him, but not quick or explosive to get rebounds out of his area). Potter will play hard and make some open shots, but I don't think he's the answer at center.

cj not only has to improve his consistency, he has to stay completely healthy and stay out of foul trouble. It would be great if he shot the ball as well as he did the last 4 games, but I just don't think his form indicates he will be able to do so consistently.

We have a bunch of 3/4s. jallow is quick enough to play some 2, but I don't think his offensive game is there yet. We'll certainly see a lot of 3 forward lineups again and when cj goes to the bench, some 4 forward lineups. Will Holtmann be able to figure out how to be effective offensively with that lineup (I imagine we'll see some zone defensively)?

I think we will win more than 6 games, but the margin between us, psu, rutgers and nebraska isn't that great. There is a reason we are projected by pretty much everyone to be in the bottom third of the conference. Our overall talent/experience is very average and we have lack of depth at key positions. ITs going to be a struggle at times this year and I think making the NIT would be a solid year 1 for Holt.

Well, Sunday November 5th, we get a look at the latest edition of the basketball Bucks. I'm most interested in seeing who handles the rock other than CJ, obviously. I'd also like to see some designed plays for Potter to stretch the D with his 3's. And I'll throw in some extra excitement for all three frosh, for good measure.
