2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

Eh the pounding by Iowa is probably too much to overcome.
I originally thought so, too, right after that debacle. But watching "Championship Drive" today, all four thought that the possibility now exists after the plunger job we gave Sparty, and if those four can come to a consensus that it's possible then I would not be surprised for the committee to have us within distant striking range Tuesday.

Beat Illinois and scUM (hopefully both convincingly)

Then Wisconsin needs to be undefeated in the B1G title game and we would need to win convincingly along with having a few other things going our way in other games to have any chance.
If all three happen, and we get a fair amount of help in other teams losing at the right time, then there could be a whole shit-ton of tOSU haters going berserk after the final ranking are released.

Bama beats Auburn and UGA

Miami beats Clemson

That leaves Bama Miami and Oklahoma. 1 spot open

Notre Dame. Seeing they win out as well would be our biggest competition to the #4 spot. (USC doesnt have the resume to beat us or ND out)

Oklahoma gagging in the Big 12 title game would help a massive amount.

If Clemson beats Miami in the ACC title game. How much does the commite love a 1 loss Miami from a mediocre at best division in the ACC?

Lots of variables at play in these last few weeks.

Clemson still has a tricky rivalry game with South Carolina in there before the ACC CG

One thing you can take to the bank:

Don’t expect to see another performance like the one in Iowa. Our guys will definitely be hearing that they still have a shot, so I’d say they will be out for blood from here on out.

Sad that there was any type of extended wake up call needed, but I think that last one really stung this team. You could see it from the first whistle to the last on Saturday. Dantonio’s squads don’t get ripped apart like that easily.

I still think the committee looks at Georgia and/or Clemson, but we'll see. Assuming they both finish 11-2 as losers in the championship games.

I just don't see anyway that they would leave out a conf champion that has the same number of losses to a team that lost in their championship game.

Bama and OU need to win out the most IMO. What would be nice is Miami gets upset before the ACC title game, that way it really doesn't matter who wins that game. We beat an undefeated Wisconsin, we'll be in

Kind of wondering what happens if Bama loses to Auburn and OSU wins out. I assume the committee would put both the SEC winner and Alabama in this case but I feel like OSU would have a stronger argument to go ahead of Bama than what PSU did last year. In this case OSU would have wins over a Top 10 Penn State, Top 10 Wisconsin, and a blowout win vs Top 15-ish Michigan State. Bama would only have wins over, at best, Top-15-ish LSU and MSU squads. Bama would have a much better loss though even if they somehow got pummeled by 40. Next couple of weeks are going to be really interesting.

They would also have only one loss and also be Alabama...

Bama winning out is pretty much a must.

OU losing might actually help in the end, that may open up a 2nd spot in the final 4 instead of keeping it at 1 in the end.

I don't think a 1 loss non conference champion Miami gets in over Ohio State

Yea, they destroyed Notre Dame, however the overall resume just is not there in a year where the ACC is pretty bad as a whole with FSU and Louisville face planting. Va Tech win doesnt look as good anymore either with them flopping to Ga Tech.

All the discussion so far aside and the committee saying previous years don't matter notwithstanding ~ 31-0 last year / 31-16, 55-24 may be the tipping point this year even if everything favors the Buckeyes the next (3) games. One could easily argue it wasn't the (2) losses that kept ped out last year, but getting blown out by TTUN 49-10.

2014: Fla State undefeated / 'bama lost by 6 to Ole Miss / Oregon lost by 7 to AZ / Buckeyes by 14 to VT
2015: Clemson undefeated / 'bama lost by 6 to Ole Miss / Sparty by 1 to NE / Oklahoma by 7 to TX
2016: 'bama undefeated / Clemson lost by 1 to Pitt / Washington by 13 to So Cal / Buckeyes by 3 to ped

So you see the worst loss by a final four team is Ohio State's 14 to VT. Just want to get you guys/girls prepared when the Buckeyes get left out even if everything seems to fall their way.

Bottom line a team that loses by 31 to Iowa really shouldn't be in the final four, let alone 15 to the Sooners. The same Iowa team that had 66 frickin' total yards against Wisky.

Of course it helps that some teams in the mix have also been blown out. Or will have (3) losses at the end of the season. Repeating, it would behoove the Buckeyes to blow out their remaining opponents. Having said all this will be very happy if they win the B1G title regardless.

carry on ...

I don't think this team really "deserves" to be in the playoff after what happened vs Iowa. It's definitely possible though with some luck. There shouldn't be any crying about getting "left out" period though. 2 losses in any year you made your own bed. This year is a bit of an odd year though, nobody really stands out as elite, including Alabama. .....just a group of 6 or 7 "good better than probably the rest" teams.

Agreed.

At this point, the only way tOSU has a chance to even get into the conversation is to win the next three in very convincing fashion - 50+ over Illinois and 28-30+ over scUM & Wisky.

As someone said earlier, if Bama, do U and Oklahoma win out, they have spots 1-3. There will be a mess of teams with 2 losses (plus a potential non BIG10 champ Wisky with 1 loss), arguing that they deserve the 4 spot.
