Game Thread 2017 Cotton Bowl: OSU vs. USC - 12/29/17 @ 8:30 ET (ESPN)

Per ticket broker interviewed by local NBC-4, demand for this appears to be lower than any bowl game in recent OSU history. Reasons were: recent USC series, consolation prize after being snubbed by playoff, and fans were already invested in Dallas trip for TCU game next September 15.

If you're not a frequent bowl traveler you may be able to enjoy this one on the cheap (comparatively). If you're local to the DFW metro, you got no excuse to ignore the walk-up ticket sale.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't our last "series" with USC in '08 and '09? It's not like it was a couple years ago...

So, I like the matchup. But...I find very little reason to be excited about playing in the fucking Cotton Bowl. Maybe I understand not getting into the playoffs, but playing us on December 29th and shunning us from a New Years Bowl seems like a giant middle finger unless I have missed the memo that the Cotton Bowl is now the best bowl game that doesn't get you into the playoffs.

Don't get me wrong, I want to win this game bad and I love getting to play USC. I just can't fathom why we are playing in the Cotton Bowl against them.

Hmm...well there is this, so maybe I will go

This is highly unfair to the team and way huge of expectations, but I too am not excited much about the Cotton Bowl. Don't get me wrong I am happy it's vs U$C and it's the best thing outside of a playoff game, but I just have high expectations for us to be a top 4 team every year. If Clemson seems able to do it 3 straight years, and Bama 4 straight years, I do not see why we aren't always in it either. 2/4 isn't bad by any means I know, but still I expect more from Urban. When I went to the Fiesta in 2015, I just felt so bummed, I knew we'd kick the crap out of ND and I knew we belonged in that stadium a week later and weren't.

And there's your modern day entitled attitude.

Please share the info.

I just checked Orbitz. A $600 pp flight (CMH-DFW) & 2 nights in a good hotel was available as a combo package. There were several hotels for that price range too. The flights were good times/connections, going on Delta and returning on American. I'm sure the cheaper flights and hotels will book fast.

It's a great venue! Weather will probably be great, too! Probably a very reasonable bowl trip.
Urban coached at ND which probably means he was on a team that played USC every year.
USC followers will probably stay home. It will be mostly a Buckeye crowd.

A B1G Championship, beat scUM again, beat Ped State, wrecked Dantonio, reminded the Badgers they will never be as good as us, opportunity to beat USC, chance to finish 3rd in the country, countless bright spots by young guys (Dobbins, Young, Haskins, Victor, Borland, Okudah, etc.).

All of this is possible despite two absolutely embarrassing losses. We should be grateful, not disappointed. Powerhouse programs left and right are tumbling away to mediocrity.....FSU, UF, Texas, Tennessee, etc. Enjoy this, almost the entire rest of the country is envious.

Get the young guys a chance to travel to Dallas and familiarize themselves with the stadium before traveling back in September. Let’s just be honest, missing the playoffs is a disappointment to fans, the players are just as down. Coach and the staff have their hands full to keep the guys mentally motivated.

I’ve heard about a coach (Saban I think) say it’s hard to get his team UP for a big game more than 2-3 times a year. Hence the trap games after a big rival...this will be a lot different because it’s a month of prep and a build up to game day that will have a real feeling of finality for several key guys. It’s still a big challenge against another team facing similar challenges. Hopefully there’s just no off the field nonsense or looking ahead to the NFL type stuff. Looking forward to seeing some young guys like Okudah and Browning get some reps on defense not just special teams.
