2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

PRESSER BULLETS: URBAN MEYER PRAISES OHIO STATE'S PERFORMANCES AGAINST UNLV, PROVIDES INJURY UPDATE
  • Some of the pass interference calls in Saturday's game were "questionable," but Ohio State's defensive backs need to fix their technique in order to avoid those penalties.

Re: questionable.

I'll say we flat out got screwed on a couple of those calls...... :mad1:
they were close enough that you can't leave any doubt.. he turns his head he's good but I haven't seen Kendall turn yet this year.

We see this a ton though with our defense... Our top two CB's tend to be good but our 3rd guy struggles. Conley in 14', Lattimore in 15' and Arnette last year.

This feels different though. Kendall is there athletically but he's just not trusting himself enough to turn around and make a play on the ball. You can tell he's sort of panicked at the end of most throws and starts grabbing and pulling which will be a flag a vast majority of the time. I'd really like to see us limit his exposure right now because he's struggling I bit I think...

Bright side is we gave up less than 100 yards passing again.

Yeah not too sure why we don't get home more on the QB..I know people get rid of the ball quick against us but the same can be said for the other defenses who rank higher.

Still waiting for our dline to just put this team on their shoulders. They've been good but they have another gear they can get to IMO.

I think their performance would "look" better if the LB's and Safties could cover the outlet receivers better.

The DL by themselves consistently generate great pressure and make QB's throw early/quick

It seems like they failed when that turns into a 7 yard gain to the fullback

Which it seems like the back 7 has really started to get their shit together. That was even the case last year too when we had 3 first rounders though. Lewis has been really quiet though and I also havent seen us deploy the rushman package much too.

I know they like Bosa on the edge but in passing situations he would be a terror in the middle.

This is odd to write, as we just shut out a B1G team, but our tackling sucks. I haven't seen so many arm tackles and misses since before Ash arrived. Actual solid tackles, other than by the D-line at/behind the line of scrimmage, were few on both defense and special teams. Our kick coverage was great in the sense that we always had someone there, but that someone never (almost never?) made the tackle. Obviously, we got by yesterday, but I don't know that it would be enough against the decent teams on the schedule and in the playoff.

I get what you're saying Rugby, tackling needs to be cleaned up for sure. Our guys are never going to beat Bama or Clemson while playing Rutgers and UNLV. Just play your best against the opponent in front of your face and get better each week. That's all you can really ask for this early in the season.

The tackling needs to improve week by week and I think next week will show all of us a little more as Maryland seems to have a decent rushing attack.

The positive is that we had guys there, fast, for just about every tackle on defense and special teams. We just have to make solid contact when we get there, wrap them up and put them on the ground.

Sort of funny... I thought Sheffield didn't play a lot watching it live and come to find out he played the most for any DB. Good for Kendall because as a DB you either want to be heard for making a INT or not heard from at all.

Glad he had from all accounts a stellar performance for the 2nd time in 3 weeks and the pass defense has really been coming on as of late.

Boy if this secondary can become consistent (giving up below 230 per game) that'll make things very difficult on opposing defenses when trying to deal with our DL. I dare a QB to hold onto the ball trying to find an open man against this front.

That's the silver lining I'm holding onto for now. Many of OSU's best corners were dreadful early on and they went on to become quality players, though most were not within that same season. As much as Sheffield and a few others have struggled early on, they're typically right there not woefully behind the play.

Jerome Baker has first round talent. They need him to have All B1G 3rd team consistency and then they have something special.

Pete Werner drew rave reviews this offseason. Now most return teams will not be Rutgers, but it was still fun to watch him Bosa this returner:
