2018-2019 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

As pointed out by Ken Pomeroy and Jardy, the only team in a conference currently mathematically eliminated from their respective conference championship race is Dave Dickerson's USC Upstate Spartans, at 0-7 as of the start of play today.

Illinois has some players. They got an absolute steal in their frosh big Giorgi B and Ayo Dosunmu is starting to play like he will be in the NBA sooner than later, not to mention a senior leader in Henry and Trent Frazier who was All-B1G Freshman team last season.

I can only hope Ayo comes on so hot he actually leaves after this season. Because if he comes back then the only thing Illinois is losing of note is Henry, they return pretty much everything else including some promising young guys like frosh 4-star Tevian Jones and add help in the frontcourt with 4-star January and T40 Cockburn. And I hate Illinois so I'd much rather Ayo leave, haha.

Alabama is the one team that is on the bubble that has no business being there. With the talent they have, they should make the tournament easily. Dropped a game at Baylor today, and Bama is now 12-7. Should go on a run the back half of conference season and work their way in.

Yeah, it's been brutal for Giddens at Alabama. Not only does he not get any chance to play the 4 there which was supposedly the impetus for him to leave OSU, but he frequently doesnt play at all. I would expect him to try the grad transfer route for next year, if he is eligible for it. There are a ton of programs that would find more minutes for him. He can't shoot, but he still can do certain things extremely well for a college basketball player. Georgia State or Georgia Southern coaches would think they died and went to heaven with him on their roster.

by the way, giddens has averaged a foul every 3.8 minutes this season. and we think kaleb (every 7.2) and ledee (6.0) are prone to fouling.

one of my all-time favorite and most pathetic stat lines was for giddens' performance in this year's exhibition versus jax st.: 0 points, 1 rebound, 5 turnovers, and 7 fouls in 9 minutes. i think it's literally impossible to play worse than that.

it's too bad matta beat out kansas, ucla, indiana, louisville, florida, texas, etc. for his "services." however, we were truly blessed that daniel's dad got in his ear about how matta wasn't using him right. daniel giddens: truly a great face-up 4 that deserves to dominate the ball.

he's certainly not going to be around for bama next year -- that is, if he even finishes out this season. according to some fans, giddens was heated when avery took him out of a game a couple weeks ago. he then didn't travel with the team for the next game due to a "family matter." if he's not on track to graduate this spring or summer, then his best bet would probably be to drop even lower than georgia southern or state so that he can play immediately. transfer to another division 1 program and i wouldn't be surprised if he never plays another game.

in their blowout win over ole miss a few days ago, even the 5'11" walk-on saw minutes before giddens did. daniel played just 3 minutes. naturally, he picked up a foul.

IDK what is going on down there, but it is odd how in the summer of 2017 and leading into his first season at Bama, there was a ton of buzz about how Giddens was dominating open gyms and practices, and he has sat the bench for the most part. He might be the textbook example for the guy who has all the physical talent in the world but lacks basketball skill.

The Cal Bears are currently #280 in the country in overall KenPom ranking. That's a low major basketball team pretending to be high major. By my count, Cal is rated 23rd of the 25 California NCAA D1A hoops schools. They are ranked behind a 5-13 UC Davis team from the Big West Conference.
