2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

In the off season, I would be fine with a few defensive changes:
DC- Grinch
DL- LJsr
LB-Freeman(UC) or another up and coming LB coach like Byron Thweatt from Marshall
CB-Johnson (give him another year, as there was a talent dropoff at CB)
S- Grinch

Let's get some new blood infused into this defense like we have on offense with Day, Alford and Hartline

I was just about to post something similar. I know the season is not over yet but definitely not too early to start thinking about next season. Given the shit show on defense, I don't really care who they bring in because it will be an improvement with who they have now.

I hate the co-DC and co-OC. Get rid of that and let the replacement coaches teach the kids. I wonder how much time Grinch has spent with the Safeties this year given his co-DC duties. Judging by their play, I venture to guess not a lot.

Schiano looked good when Ohio State had four first-round picks in the secondary and mid-round picks at linebacker. But he and Davis have been terrible without that type of NFL talent at their disposal this year because they've still not corrected the lack of gap discipline on the unit.

If Meyer stays beyond this season, he needs to consider revamping his defensive staff. Alex Grinch was superb with Washington State, and Larry Johnson is a legendary defensive line coach. But everyone else should be on the hot seat.

Funny that media outlets like BR are even calling out our coaches and seeing the shitshow that is our defensive staff

see the post I just made in the Maryland Game thread. .

And I appreciate that post. Funny enough, from the very first play of watching Fuller arrive like his hair is on fire and not disciplined or under control was a big foreshadow. On the first huge run our weakside end was closed, White got sucked in by the motion and Arnette played his assignment like an idiot - either he doesn't like contact or he was unsure of what to do. Arnette becomes contain and White is the run force.

Even more funny, since the tackle so easily sealed our end, chances are that was going to be a big gain anyway without the motion.

I honestly don't remember our ends being so out-leveraged by scheme while under Ash or Dantonio on those fronts. That backside end routinely would have the C gap, force the tackle to lateral downstep to engage and the backside backer would be able to shoot under as the fill while the safety would Vice/Force and the other linebackers flowed laterally.

I would love to pick the defensive staffs minds about their philosophy. Because right now I see the fundamental lack of understanding basic assignments as a coaching problem.

Watching the DB's look around early and not understand their alignments/responsibilities when they see Marylands personnel and formation is a pretty big tell. The communication and moving around late in the pre-snap is also a concern from the top down. Also indicates to me a lack of a true football IQ and leader on the field in the secondary - usually one of your safeties.

The inability to recognize, adjust and defend something like a weakside zone run ( mostly to the 3 hole) isn't something I ever thought I would see at this level of play. Make no mistake about it, that is exactly what happened yesterday. I watching six figure coaches on our sidelines get clowned on with Jr. High level adjustments and scheming.
To me, not getting aligned correctly, which has been the case all fucking year by the way including the LBs which amazes my ass because they should know where everyone else should be too let alone their own ass, is a reflection of poor preparation. By Weds of each week every SOB on the defensive side of the ball should know exactly where to be on every damn formation that Maryland has shown on video the past 3 fucking years. This is simple preparation shit and film time.

I see your preparation and add communication. Our problems in 2013 were in part due to the units not knowing what the other is doing. I see the same this year.

My thought..... I think the problem is leadership on the field. Who is the leader on the field? There isn't,t any whole team cohesiveness on the defense. I'm used to having LB's to set the team and I think we don't have that.

Any interest in Bo Pelini as a DC for next year? This is his last year of Nebraska making him a high paid coach for Youngstown.
Yes i would be OK with that as long as he can do anything and everything necessary to create a good defense.

I don't want any "you run our defense" bull shit... you let whoever runs the defense next year do whatever they want to make us elite.

none of it matters at this point

just go win

find a way
Yep... no sense in fretting anymore.

We have a poor defense and that's probably not changing baring some sort of miracle. You just have to hope for a Penn State/Minny performance were we give up yards but not points.

Hold them under 30 and we will always have a shot.
