95852_h.jpg

With Urban Meyer suspended for the first three games of the season, Ryan Day and Greg Schiano filled in on Meyer's weekly coaches show on 97.1 The Fan to discuss all things Buckeye football with Paul Keels and Jim Lachey.

RYAN DAY ON THE OFFENSE

ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE:
  • "It's a veteran group."
  • On Isaiah Prince: "From where he was to where he is now, not only as a leader but as a player is some of hte most progress I've ever seen."
  • Dwayne Haskins is "going to lean on those guys as time goes on."
ON MIKE WEBER AND J.K. DOBBINS:
  • First time Ohio State has ever returned two 1,000 yard rushers
  • It's a big deal to have guys like that in the program.
  • It will help Dwayne Haskins.
  • They pull for one another. "they know they need each other."
  • They understand they're both going to split a ton of carries.
ON MASTER TEAGUE AND BRIAN SNEAD:
  • "Master is a big downhill back."
  • Brian is "a bit more shifty."
  • Both will play this year.
ON TWO-BACK SETS:
  • We'll see how the season goes.
  • "We have 8-10 wide receivers who can play as well."
DWAYNE HASKINS:
  • "He looks like an NFL quarterback."
  • He's going to make mistakes.
  • He has no career starts.
  • Replacing one of the most accomplished players in college football.
ON THE TIGHT ENDS:
  • Deeper than they were last year, but less experienced.
  • Luke Farrell is the starter.
  • Rashod Berry will also play.
  • Jeremy Ruckert is going to play early.
  • Jake Hausmann has been injured, but is expected to play too.
ON TATE MARTELL:
  • "The plan is to get him out on the field and play."
  • "We're not going to put him in for packages or anything like that, we're just going to put him in the offense and let him go."
ON THE RECEIVERS:
  • There will be a rotation.
  • H-position "we're almost four-deep."
  • "We're planning on playing depth, and playing tempo."
  • The receivers are playing unselfish. They know there will be a rotation.

I won't add on just how impressed I was with Haskins(god he looked like a real elite QB). But I want to say how lucky we are to have 2 legit RBs. I mean 2 legit RBs who can start and produce with NO drop off whatsoever. The whole off season I'm sure that Oregon St prepared for shutting down JK, and it seemed like they completely forgot that Weber is every bit as good, and maybe even slightly more powerful. I can just imagine defensive rooms around the B1G thinking of a way to stop both guys, but when you have 2 RBs like this(and Bama can attest to this) the defense just can't help but be worn down when an OL the size that we have is wearing on you, and JK and Mike are hitting you in the mouth for 4QTs.

I wanted to pop in to give Rashod Berry some props; I think very highly of his potential as a player and it was a bummer to see him hindered in spring practice with an injury because I thought he’d pull away.

Glad he got significant burn and a score early on. It is my hope Day and Wilson understand the serious matchup issue(s) he poses to opposing defenses with a guy like Haskins whom can and will put the ball wherever the hell he wants.

Here’s to it. (I couldn’t find his thread, but that’s a weapon for this offense)

SKULL SESSION: WEBER AND DOBBINS TAG TEAM, C.J. JACKSON EXPECTED TO BREAK OUT, AND BRAYLON EDWARDS SUSPENDED FOR SPEAKING TRUTH

TWO-HEADED MONSTER. Folks, I'm beginning to think it's not really fair that Ohio State gets to have both Mike Weber and J.K Dobbins.

It's one thing to have star players, and lots of them, but it's a little absurd to have two former 1,000-yard rushers who can just take turns pounding an opposing defense while the other rests up on the sideline for his go.

It's like a damn water-cooled machine gun.

From Tim Bielik of Cleveland.com:

But if you play fast, you can't substitute. That means after the players completed a play, they have to hurry up back to the line of scrimmage and get ready for the next one. Then they have to do that again and again until either the drive is over or the offense needs to change up personnel.

That's a reason why Day and the Buckeyes have been trying as much as possible to give Dobbins and Weber as close to a 50/50 split in order to keep that tempo going. But he also added there's a magic number for plays to watch on drives.

"Sometimes when you go with a series that there is four plays. They're just rolling. You know, we had a couple of those drives," Day said. "But then if it gets into six, seven, eight, nine play range, it also depends on what he's involved in.

"If he just had a run for ten, and he turns around and runs the ball over here for another ten, and now you get to play four and five, and he starts to show fatigue, then that might be a time to get him out."

Early on, I wanted to see both of them on the field at the same time in two-back sets, but after seeing how they work as a tag-team instead, I'm all in on this.

OHIO STATE'S OFFENSE FINDS SUCCESS WITH TWO-TIGHT END SETS IN SEASON OPENER
Dan Hope on September 5, 2018 at 8:35 am @dan_hope

In the first half of Saturday’s season opener against Oregon State, Ohio State ran three offensive plays in which it had two tight ends on the field simultaneously. All three of those plays resulted in touchdowns.

Facing 2nd-and-goal at the 2-yard line on their first possession of the game, the Buckeyes put both Luke Farrell and Rashod Berry on the right side of the line – drawing the Oregon State defense in expecting a run play – and wide receiver Terry McLaurin beat single coverage on a route across the end zone to catch a touchdown from Dwayne Haskins.

I’ve been fantasizing about two tight end sets for months with Berry/Ruckert or Berry/Ferrell. When you have two guys whom can separate from linebackers with speed and route running, you create a TON of problems with flexing and motioning pre snap — particularly when facing a base defense.
