This is just bizarre. Did Holgorson just start the college football version of tanking?

Are you really gonna question this man?

I watched the Nebraska-Illinois game and saw something I've been waiting to see for a while.

Nebraska kicked off and the ball hit the turf inbounds, rolling toward a stop about 3 feet inside the sideline near the 3 yard line. Instead of picking it up and getting hammered between the 5 and 10 yard lines, the Illini returner stepped around the ball, quickly put both feet out of bounds, making sure his toes were touching the ground before he touched the ball. The refs correctly called an out of bounds kickoff giving Illinois the ball on the 35 yard line.

Lovie may not yet be earning his money in Champaign, but he or one of his assistants got a kid to comprehend the rule and make a quick decision that saved his team 25 to 30 yards. I hope the Buckeye coaches show that play to any potential kickoff returners every year until they change the rule to say that the ball itself has to cross the sideline to be out on a kickoff.

That seems like illegal touching?

I can see where they may think about changing the rule, but it's the same as recovering a fumble now - if you're out of bounds when you touch the ball it is considered to be out of bounds and the play is over. Since it's a kickoff, the out of bounds condition results in the ball going to the 35. I've been waiting to see a return man blatantly step out before touching a ball that wasn't heading into the end zone or the sideline, and that was it.

I’ve seen it in the nfl, but that was definitely the first time in college ball that I’ve seen that
