2022 Rose Bowl, tOSU vs Utah, Jan 1st @ 5pm EST, ESPN

Just to point out the obvious, OSU beats Michigan by 14-17 pts on the Rose Bowl field.

Unfortunately, we don’t get that type of weather every week in Big 10, and that’s a challenge Day needs to sort out…..this team can play with anyone when conditions are perfect (in a dome, the Rose Bowl). It’s not as straightforward when the conditions aren’t perfect and we need to rely more on power run.
Is dumb to think OSU gives Georgia a better game? Still think the Buckeyes lose by 2TDs but man would it have been fun to watch Earth, Wind, and Fire against UGA’s defense. UGA offense vs our defense would’ve been ugly though lol.

I expect our game would have went like the TSUN or Oregon game. Would have put up more points but no faith in our ability to stop them from jamming it down our throats. So you're right any where from 7-17 point loss. But if it was anything like the Rose bowl it would have been a hell of exciting watch

My hot take is that the defense came to play in the first half and was mostly put in bad spots and were consistently unlucky.

The defensive line was disruptive and causing problems for Utah the entire game; they were clearly not being physically outplayed and that started from the first snap. The major issue is that the back seven were confused pre snap when they were in man, and they all suck at zone coverage. That is absolutely a schematic issue and a coaching issue, and I am as happy as anyone for Knowles to come in and install and teach a new system.

As a side note, the defense hasn't had an offseason to install a system for two straight seasons. Last year because of COVID, and this year because Coombs was such a disaster that they scrapped everything and started over in the middle of the year. A full offseason with Knowles in charge and everyone on the same page for what they are teaching is going to make such a huge impact. I am very excited.

Back to my point, the defense was clearly very confused early on and needed to make some adjustments, and to their credit, they did... eventually. However, the offense going three-and-out on the first two drives left the defense out to dry and severely limited the adjustments they could make early on.

Utah scored on three of their first four drives, and although that is not good defense, obviously, it was a big, big problem that the offense was on the field for a grand total of six plays during that time, giving the defense no time to discuss what they needed to do differently.

Then you had the kickoff return, which was shitty in its own right but not the defense's fault. Then you had the fourth down touchdown that was absolutely awful execution, and a low point, but was a relatively fluky and unlucky play.

Then the defense had a stop to end the half and gave up ten points in the second half.

I am as happy as anyone that Knowles is coming in and am completely on board for any additional coaching changes that are coming, but to reiterate my initial point, I think the defense and its players should get a little more credit for coming to play from the very first snap despite the awful results in the first half.

Gotta say I am fully impressed with how Ryan Day got that locker room turned around at half, in spite of the defense still struggling. Hopefully, Knowles will fix that, make the D tough, and bring in some DE's that we need badly.

What I was encouraged by was reading Day saying he left them to do it themselves. Find that grit, or whatever you want to call it, to respond after another punch in the face.

That starts to answer a lot of questions/concerns I had about Day and the team.

I'm not worried about the DE's. I think Sawyer and JTT will step up. We, converseley, haven't had top tier linebacker play in several years, and our DB's have regressed seriously the last two. He's got a job ahead of him, but I'd say the DL is probably third in line.

Definitely an NFL approach of I'm going to treat you like men and like professionals..........now prove me right.

I’m glad the approach worked. Could it also be a possible explanation for all the flame outs of Urban guys like Pope and Williamson.

It’s a really strange juxtaposition that Williamson seems upset at how controlling Meyer’s style was, but under Day’s “take control of your own destiny” style they completely failed as well.

It’s a weird phenomenon that hopefully hit its peak this season… hopefully everyone is on board with Day’s style moving forward and it continues to be successful.

They should have plenty of young players with playing experience and bought in to the leadership style moving forward, you would hope.
