#6 The Ohio State University @ #7 North Carolina, Wednesday, Dec 4 @ 9:30 PM, ESPN

based on how much the commentators are talking about unc, you'd assume that unc is the team up 25.
I was thinking that the whole damn game. Bilas is getting up there with Dickie V with their love for the ACC. I was thinking last night that the B1G should tell that crap network that they are going to take the challenge to Fox. If the ACC does not like it, tuck the ACC. We do not need them as much of they need us.

Bilas is pro-ACC for the exact same reason the Gameday crew loves the SEC: their boss is in bed with these conferences. Bilas used to be great, but he traded in his "smartest guy in basketball" persona to become a standard-issue ESPN shill years ago.

OHIO STATE'S IMPECCABLE DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE PUT OHIO STATE IN POSITION TO BLOW OUT NORTH CAROLINA IN HISTORIC FASHION

109983_h.jpg

In the days leading up to sixth-ranked Ohio State’s 74-49 drubbing of No. 7 North Carolina, Ohio State spent a bit more time working on its defensive rebounding. Transition defense became more of a focus. Stopping Cole Anthony, a possible top-five pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, naturally was at the top of the scouting report.

Chris Holtmann, though, didn’t make any wholesale changes. He didn’t dial up a full-court press or a zone to try to hold the Tar Heels in check. Nothing crazy. He had no need to do so.

What worked defensively against North Carolina were the same scheme and basic principles that have worked throughout the season.

“It's been the same approach all year,” Duane Washington Jr. said. “Attention to details. Play really, really hard. Be the more tougher team. We came out, had a chip on our shoulder as we always do, and we came out and fought, fought hard.”

If that’s the norm, one has to wonder what this team might be capable of on the defensive end of the court throughout the season.

Ohio State didn’t just beat the Tar Heels on Wednesday night. It thoroughly dominated a top-10 team in historic fashion. Consider these records from the game:
  • North Carolina shot its lowest field-goal percentage (27.4) in a single game in Dean E. Smith Center history.
  • Ohio State’s plus-23 margin in the second half was the largest by any North Carolina opponent in Dean E. Smith Center history.
  • North Carolina’s 49 points were the third-fewest it has ever scored.
  • Ohio State’s 25-point win was the second-largest margin of victory by a visiting team in Dean E. Smith Center history.
In totality, the Buckeyes throttled a top-10 team with plenty of offensive firepower, beginning with Anthony.

“Obviously Anthony was the biggest point of emphasis and his ability to get in the lane and create his own offense,” Holtmann said. “We tried to put two to the ball a lot with him and then make the other guys kind of play over top of us.”

MEN'S BASKETBALL: NO. 6 OHIO STATE RUNS AWAY FROM NO. 7 NORTH CAROLINA 74-49

IMG_2466-530x353.jpg

Duane Washington’s 18 points kept Ohio State ahead through the late-first and early-second half, but it was a team effort to put North Carolina away Wednesday.

Four different Buckeyes scored during the 9-0 second-half run that placed No. 6 Ohio State (8-0) ahead 48-36 against No. 7 North Carolina (6-2), en route to an eventual 74-49 victory in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Washington, a sophomore guard, led the way in scoring. Junior forward Kaleb Wesson pulled in a near-double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Ohio State limited the production of North Carolina star freshman forward Cole Anthony to 15 points on 4-for-15 shooting.

Freshman forward E.J. Liddell and redshirt junior CJ Walker also finished in double figures.

Following the eventual game-sealing run, Liddell got in on the action with a string of four points, then North Carolina coach Roy Williams decided to place a squad of second-teamers in. They cut the lead back to single digits at 57-48 before the starters re-entered.

The starters surrendered a 14-0 run over the next 5:19.

It wasn’t just Anthony the defense was smothering. North Carolina finished a meager 27 percent from the field, and Ohio State out-rebounded the Tar Heels 48-32.

North Carolina had out-boarded its opponents by 20 rebounds per game entering the contest.

Twice, Ohio State has faced top 10 opponents this season.

Twice, Washington has buried three 3s in the opening six minutes to ignite the Buckeye offense.

After the Tar Heels opened with a 5-0 stretch and Ohio State failed to score the opening 2:48, Washington cashed in a triple to open the Buckeye scoring.

With Washington’s help from the outside, Ohio State outscored North Carolina 22-9 over the next 6:05 to take a 22-14 advantage.

But Anthony and turnovers kept the Tar Heels alive.

The Oregon native stepped outside to hit a pair of 3s en route to eight first half points, and the Buckeyes turned the ball over 10 times in the opening 20 minutes which North Carolina scored six points from, cutting the lead to 29-27 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the final 2:43.

North Carolina freshman forward Armando Bacot, who entered averaging nearly 12 points and 10 boards, went down with an apparent ankle injury with just under 13 minutes to play in the first half. He did not return.

Ohio State opens conference play against Penn State Saturday at noon in the Schottenstein Center.

I expected to have breakfast and watch the highlights of Ohio State losing its first away game in a close one that was encouraging for a young team. Say 3 to 5 points, and maybe even a close win.

I did not see that second half mugging coming. There will be losses ahead but I haven't enjoyed watching a basketball game that much in a long time.

This could be a lot of fun.
