Game Thread #7 tOSU 18, Purdue 26 (Oct 17, Noon ET, BTN)

Guess what happened today? We lost.

Oh well, can't win em all. The non-Bandwagoners should know this happens to any good team.

We have been spoiled since '02 and think its our right for our offense to ALWAYS be clicking and to win EVERY game. 2001 sucked, beginning of '04 sucked. Guess what? Time moved on and we won games. We had no need to fire anyone then and we still don't now.

This is COLLEGE football, these are 18-21 year old KIDS out there. Let em play, let em make mistakes - let em learn.

Remember, "time and change will surely show...."

I commend this and agree, but a top program shouldn't be losing to a team like Purdue. With the defense we had we simply had to not make mistakes and we continue to do so. End of the world? surely not, after all they're young.

In saying that though boy am I concerned as far as the rest of the season goes. Sure we should still win almost every game (atleast on paper), but every team we play (minus New Mexico State) has a legit shot to beat us due to our ineptitude on offense. It's simple, no matter how good we are on defense we can't win if we don't score points.

Count me in as part of the group that's just concerned of the direction of the offense. No featured back, a Developing and turnover prone QB, and a conservative approach really makes the rest of our games interesting. Penn State, Iowa, and Michigan are going to be mighty struggles.

But there's still time to get things turned around, but unfortunately I don't see us getting heads and shoulders better anytime this year. We'll probably struggle with offensive production the rest of the way. Hope I'm wrong though... Disappointing, but the season moves forward.

The sophomore slump is not uncommon in any sport. I know first hand and I have spoke to many athletes who told me their first year they were trying to figure out what they were doing, the second year trying to figure out what everyone else is doing and the third year they try to put it together.

Out played.
Out coached.
We new this was coming, admit it.

Interesting that the 2 minute drill looked good, again.
Maybe the "2 minute drill" should be our "60 minute" offense?
A "hurry up" offense, anyone?

We can still win a share of the Big Ten believe it or not.
Need to win out. At State Penn will be an adventure. And at scUM won't be easy, either.
Iowa at home could be huge.

TP had a bad game BUT he never said he was winning 3 Heismans, greatest HS player of all time, or was going to cure cancer. All the hype came from recruiting services and over-zealous fans who now want him banished to WR or the bench. If TP needs someone to talk to maybe Zwick could offer him more sound advice than anyone. The situation he came into was not conducive to learning the position..its all about the W's, obviously at tOSU expectations are high and hard to attain.

Anytime you create a tempo or sense of urgency it always ends up ok. I don't understand why more teams don't go hurry up? Obviously that's where Pryor started just cutting lose and not thinking so who knows maybe that's a good approach? It's just funny to see teams that struggle all game long then once it's 2 minute they move the ball like it's no one's business.

All I do know is that the coaches have to somehow take away Pryor's constant decision making. Dumb things down. Look at Georgia tech for example. While it's a whole different animal they do the SAME THINGS but are still successful. Why? Because they execute the plays they want to do well.

I don't care if we only run 5 different plays. I'd rather run 5 plays to form, than a number of plays that we can't execute properly. Then build off the base of plays that Pryor does well. I remember seeing an article saying we have over 100 plays? Who the FUCK cares how many plays we have when we can run only about 25 of them properly? I think we're making things harder on us than they need to be thats for sure.

First and foremost hats off Purdue. Way to take the fight to the Buckeyes. You played to win and things worked out great for you guys enjoy the win!

Couple points before I go get some beers and a loose women. Sorry Wife.. the type of frustration sex I want to impose is not good for our relationship.. I am sure you will understand...

Dang good point Stxbuck...

- Even the good plays for Pryor today were bad.. the long pass to Saine.. The Posey TD, and the Carter pass.. .All bad. Keep working hard young man.. It will come together for you at some point.

- Kicking a FG on the 2... Hated the call

- The in-suing squib kick... HATED the call even more

- That funny fumble no it really is not a fumble call had huge impacts to this game. 100% momentum Buckeyes if we get the ball there and at least a FG

- This offensive performance was coming. The last 3 weeks was showing it would happen sooner then later.

- Wish we could have got the record for most consecutive road victories.. but we didn't and that is a hard feat. JT is not just being funny when he says any road win in the Big Ten is a good win

- My gut reaction was get Bauserman in there and let Pryor sit the rest of this one out. No QB controversy just say son that football means a whole lot to winning and you have mistreated it 4 times today... that is enough. But looking long term who knows what bad implications that could have

All in all good win for Purdue... Bad loss for the Bucks.. But still love em and hope we improve from this loss and find a way to win the Big Ten. Tough last couple of games for em but they can do it

I agree with cblitz here. Especially to sit the quarterback down.

I have posted several times that I wish football were a little more like basketball in that if your starting point guard has 3 or 4 turnovers, throws up stupid shots, then gets a couple of stupid fouls, you TAKE HIM OUT, for his own good. Maybe you sit him for a minute, maybe for ten, but you get him out and let him clear his head. In the third quarter, Bauserman should have been put in. Put him in and let him see if he can move the team down the field. If he leads you to three straight touchdown drives, well you leave him in and now you have a QB controversy.

But you don't hold your team hostage by leaving in a quarterback who clearly was not into the game today mentally. It's just not fair to the team, and to me it smells of being afraid of the backlash from - I don't know - the fans? the staff? the media? for benching the star. But that star is killing you.

If Nick Sheridan was our backup QB, I could see leaving TP in like that for every snap. But not with Joe B back there.

Today was like The Emperor's Clothes... we're all watching Pryor scuttle the ship, and we're pretending like he's our only chance of success?

Bull.

I was hoping to see another HOLY BUCKEYE on that last drive today...But it never happened. :sad2:

That's all I kept thinking about when they were driving to make the score 26-18. I was like will we see 2009's version of the Holy Buckeye? Oh well. Time to disappoint Minnesota and Eric Decker once more next week!

Couple of things - I must say I was really surprised when I read this week that Tressel said in an interview that Pryor did not call audibles. If he is not the only one, there are not a whole lot of others in college football (and most high schools) that are not allowed to call audibles. Only reason I could think of is Pryor is just not yet capable of reading the defense correctly, which can obviously be a HUGE detriment.
No excuse for his play, but our offensive line was horrible. Wondering if you could put this down to the nest point.
I would imagine most have read this article. In this one, he does mention Pryor calls audibles, so not sure how accurate it is, but if the few pics he posted analyzing the game hold true for most plays, is a pretty devastating critique.
If you have not read it, I highly recommend it. Would also explain why after the USC game I even heard in the interviews where the players said the Buckeyes did not do anything that they did not expect.
Should read this
do not get me wrong, i am not enough of an expert to know if what this critique says is 100% true, but if only 75% is true........which seems to hold some weight as it has been the last 4 years, which are pointed out in the end of the article how college offensive games have so drastically changed.

Coleman is a beast. He will be another first round NFL pick.
