Thump: "Weren't most of these playoff pitchers pitching during the regular season as well?"

Of course they were. Ortiz, Gay-Rod, whoever, complies gawdy numbers off shitty pitchers. The difference is, when the playoffs come, and the Triple A long men don't make the Playoff roster, and Kansas City's staff is golfing, Ortiz keeps hitting bombs and A-Rod is shut down by Santana, Schilling, Colon, etc.

My point is, yes, they essentially faced the same pitchers during the regular season - but Ortiz hits quality pitching better than A-Rod does. Hell, ANYONE hits quality pitching better than A-Rod does.

"I'm assuming he's a Red Sox homer since he lives in Connecticut. Using his twisted logic to bash him."

Actually, David Ortiz is LOVED in Yankee-land compared with A-Rod the last week. So you could be correct in calling out my bias ..

A-Rod's mother offers this explanation for his postseason play: the recent death of an uncle that raised A-Rod.

This should help his image in New York. A professional athletes can really help his macho image by having his mother defend him in the media. :tongue2:

I sympathize with A-Rod's loss, but perhaps he should talk to Brett Favre about how to perform when dealing with difficult news regarding your family.

The author, apparently not an A-Rod fan, still thinks he plays shortstop.

A-Rod's mom: Uncle's death was factor

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - Alex Rodriguez played poorly in the Yankees' American League division series loss in part because he was saddened by the death of the uncle who raised him, the slugger's mother said in an interview published in a local newspaper Sunday.

Lourdes Navarro said her son kept the Sept. 30 death of his uncle to himself because he was committed to helping his team win.

"I think he should speak with the team and tell them that his uncle, who was like his father because he raised him since he was 8, died in a hospital in Miami," Navarro told Listin daily newspaper.

Navarro didn't say what caused the death of Augusto Bolivar Navarro, who was her last surviving brother.

Rodriquez, a shortstop, was hitless in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Anaheim Angels that sent the Yankees home for the year, and finished the five-game series with no RBIs and a .133 batting average.

"I know how much he suffered from the death of his uncle without being able to do anything, from listening to me crying and not being able to be there," she said, suggesting some New York fans were being unfair to her son.

"I would like ... for the baseball fans to know that my son is a great human being, that they're seeing a human and not a robot, that he can fail, especially when there are reasons like this," she said.

Navarro said Rodriquez spoke with his uncle for three hours by phone the day before he died.

"We buried him in Santo Domingo...(Rodriguez) didn't come because of the high sense of responsibility that Alex has for his work," she said.

Rodriguez, baseball's only $25 million-a-year player, batted .321 during the regular season, with 48 homers and 130 RBIs.

I despise Barry Bonds more than any human being who has ever played baseball. That being said, I do not for 1 second kid myself into thinking he is less of a hitter due to his post season failings. He sucked major ass in the post season up untill 2002**steroids, cough, cough*** then blew up. Its just a small sample size folks.

ALL major league hitters make their living off mistake pitches and therefore bad pitchers who throw more of 'em. I would just ask the question, if pounding these weak pitchers during the regular season is so easy why isn't anyone else consistently putting up A-Rod numbers?

I know Sloop is pissed at him for having a bad series, but Sheffield, Matsui and the pitching staff didn't do you all any favors either. Its just easier to get pissed at the guy with the huge contract.

Bonds' post-season transgressions are completely thrown out the window since 2002. The Balco Blaster had one of the great WS performances of all time: 8 for 17, .471, 8 R, 2 2B, 4 HR, 6 RBI, 13 BB, .700 OBP, & 1.294 SLG.

No one will ever mention his previous failings with the Pirates again.

I never said it was easy. A-Rod's a great talent. But performing when it counts is what makes great players: Derek Jeter, Reggie Jackson, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I'm very angry at (in order): 1. A-Rod, 2. Randy Johnson, 3. Mike Mussina, 4. Sheffield, and 5. Matsui. If A-Rod, Mussina, and Sheffield are all on different teams in '06, you won't see me complaining.

I just heard it mentioned on a national sports show this morning. :tongue2:

They compared Vlad's postseason to A-Rod's. They also pointed out that A-Rod has a .307 career average in the regular season, and a .305 career average in the playoffs, which was pretty surprising to hear.

A-Rod was actually a good postseason player before this recent 9 game collapse (I don't know if collapse is a strong enough word, but). He hit .312 for the Mariners against Baltimore in the ALDS in 1997, .308 in an ALDS with Seattle vs. Chicago in 2000, .409 with 2 homers against the Yanks in the following LCS, and absolutely murdered the Twins in the DCS last year (.421).

Then came the Boston series and the bottom fell out. Then the bottom went through the basement, smashed the upper level of topsoil, sliced through some fossils underneath, into the magma, through the earth's core, and will be in China shortly.

This has nothing to do with Yankee's vs. Red Sox, this is just baseball.

I'm confident I can hold my own in any baseball conversation.

Didn't mean to imply that you can't, Thump, I know you played the game. (hit .460 one year in high school, IIRC  )

But since you weren't aware that Sloop is a Yankees fan, I was letting you know that if you discuss the Yankees with him, expect a detailed discussion in his posts. He tends to be very thorough when covering baseball topics, especially the Yankees.

Thats the point I was making earlier in this thread regarding clutch.

If you give any batter 600 AB's in the post season or 9th inning..whatever then look at 600 1st inning/regualr season AB's....his numbers will be almost identical.

There will always be more variance the smaller the sample size but over the long haul his numbers will be essentially the same untill injury or old age take him down.

I'll take 9 A-Rods for my lineup any day of the week.

sears3820: "But is ARod clutch Jax?"

Do Bears shit on toilets?
Do one-legged ducks swim in a straight line?
Does a rocking horse have an un-wooden dick?

Jax, Bill James, Billy Beane = Same Person.

In Chicago, Bears shit on toilets. Some of them, I think. :wink2:

And Albert Pujols is clutch!!!

I am not a Yankee or Boston fan, although I do think it is good for baseball when they are both contending and in the post season. I have read this entire thread and some people amaze me.

barlow1802.... .460 is average in HS???? That is hilarious. I will leave that at that. And in the Majors, DHs are always in the cage hitting off tees while the rest of the team is playing D. So there is no reason they shouldn't be loose. And if they cant concentrate on 1 thing, hitting, they should be playing slow pitch softball.

IMO, everyone here makes a good argument except for people who say A-rod chokes. here are his post season #through 2004 (my site doesn't have 2005 included yet)

Coming into this post season, in 26 games A Rod was 34 for 103 (.330) with 6 HR, 16 RBI, 9 BB and 17 Runs scored.

Choke??? Are you serious? The numbers talk.

And Sloopy, here are some of his numbers vs some pretty good pitching.

not exactly bottom of the barrel, and still pretty good numbers.

As far as the MVP goes, I have a hard time justifying giving the award to somebody who is only involved in 3-5 of 54 outs a game.

I think it has to be Alex Rodriguez, an everyday player.
