An Early Look at the Class of 2019

Since the last update, Ohio State has received three verbals for the Class of 2019 (athlete Craig Young; quarterback Dwan Mathis; and safety Jordan Battle) and three more for the Class of 2020 (defensive back Lejond Cavazos; offensive tackle Paris Johnson, Jr.; and quarterback Jack Miller). The Buckeyes remain the crystal ball leaders for defensive end Zach Harrison (100%); wide receiver Marcus Washington (100%); wide receiver Jameson Williams (100%); offensive tackle Jonathan Allen (100%); offensive tackle Darnell Wright (71%); and defensive tackle Tyler Davis (80%). The month of June also saw new offers going out to athlete Peyton Powell (100% CB'ed to Ohio State); tight end Brenton Strange (100%); tight end Cormontae Hamilton (33%); and defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte (33%).

The recruiting cycle is becoming ever more accelerated with spring official visits and an early signing period, so coaching staffs have the difficult task of figuring out which 16-year old phenoms are going to be future busts and which 16-year old sleepers are going to be future stars. That is partly to explain why Ohio State is chasing so many prospects with three-star ratings this year - if you find a diamond in the rough, you'd better pursue him early on or some other school will beat you for his services. Coaches simply don't have the luxury of waiting to see senior tape before offering a borderline prospect, and the December signing period has greatly reduced the possibility of slow-playing a recruit.

QUARTERBACKS

Graham Mertz (Mission KS Blue Valley North; 6'4" 2015 lbs; #5 pro-style quarterback; #147 nationally)

With Grant Gunnell being off the board (and never coming back), the Buckeye staff has turned their attention to Graham Mertz. Although Mertz has been committed to Wisconsin since October 8, 2017, his recruitment has blown up since then and he now has offers from big time programs like Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana State, and Notre Dame. Mertz took his official visit to Wisconsin this past weekend (June 8th and 9th). If that visit does not firm up Mertz's commitment to the Badgers, then look for the Buckeyes (and several other teams) to make a big push for his services. Update 06/14/2018: Mertz's official visit to Wisconsin must've gone well, as he quickly reaffirmed his commitment to the Badgers and closed his recruitment. So, the Buckeyes proceeded to Plan C....

NEW Dwan Mathis (Oak Park MI Oak Park; 6'4" 185 lbs; #9 pro-style; #252 overall)

Mathis committed to Michigan State all the way back on September 23, 2017, and he seemingly closed his recruitment on that date. However, Ohio State entered the fray with an offer on May 3rd. A few days later, Mathis was in Columbus for an unofficial visit, and then on June 22nd he was back for Friday Night Lights for a top secret official visit. Before that weekend was over, Mathis had flipped from Sparty to Buckeye. This commitment should stick.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Marcus Washington (St. Louis MO Trinity; 6'2" 193 lbs; #9 wide receiver; #58 overall)

After landing top wide receiver target Garrett Wilson, the Buckeye staff has now turned their Zone 6 efforts to Marcus Washington. This St. Louis native has already made three unofficial visits to Ohio State and the Buckeyes have the lone crystal ball in their favor (with another crystal ball reading "cloudy"). Washington plans to announce on August 7th (his birthday), so expect his recruitment to heat up a lot in the upcoming weeks. Update 06/10/2018: Washington makes an official visit to Ohio State (80% crystal balls, 20% cloudy) on June 22nd, and that visit could seal the deal for the Buckeyes. Washington is scheduled to make his commitment on August 7th, but it could be a mere formality by then. Update 07/05/2018: Washington has supposedly pushed off his August 7th commitment date in order to take more official visits, but the Buckeyes remain the 100% crystal ball leader for his services.

Jameson Williams (St. Louis MO Cardinal Ritter; 6'2" 160 lbs; #26 WR; #178 overall)

For the class of 2018, Ohio State signed two wide receivers from St. Louis (Kamryn Babb and Cameron Brown), so why not head back to the Gateway City for another one for the class of 2019? Four recent crystal balls have been cast for Jameson, and all four have him ending up at Ohio State. If things don't work out with the Buckeyes, then Sparty looks like a major player in this recruitment. Update 05/05/2018: Williams took an official visit to Ohio State on April 8th, and the Buckeyes remain his firm leader (100% crystal balls). Update 06/10/2018: Williams remains 100% crystal balled to Ohio State, and he will make an official visit to Columbus on June 22nd. Don't be surprised to see a Buckeye commitment shortly thereafter. Update 07/05/2018: No commitment yet, but Williams is still 100% crystal balled to Ohio State.

NEW Elijah Higgins (Austin TX Bowie; 6'2" 221 lbs; #17 wide receiver; #103 overall)

I almost hate to add Higgins to this list, because there has been absolutely zero buzz concerning him and Ohio State. Higgins did make an official visit to Columbus for Friday Night Lights, but that visit didn't seem to improve Ohio State's chances very much (and those chances were slim and none to begin with). Since the Ohio State official, Florida (31%) has picked up four crystal balls, and Stanford (31%) remains in the running.

Lance Wilhoite (Nashville TN Franklin Road Academy; 6'2" 165 lbs; #15 wide receiver; #92 overall)

During the Great Tennessee Tire Fire of 2017, Ohio State swooped into Rocky Top territory and signed offensive tackle Max Wray and running back Master Teague for the Class of 2018 and made serious progress with several 2019 recruits including Lance Wilhoite. Although Lance is 100% crystal balled to Tennessee (four predictions so far), Ohio State is the only school listed as "warmer" on his 247 Sports profile. If the Volunteers can regain some stability in 2018, then Wilhoite will probably end up in Knoxville. If the tires continue to smolder, then Columbus will be a very strong possibility. Update 05/05/2018: There's really nothing new to report here, except that Florida State has entered the mix (33% crystal balls). Ohio State appears to be a long shot despite maintaining its "warmer" status. Update 06/10/2018: Wilhoite made an unofficial visit to Ohio State this past weekend with two fellow Tennesseans (Adonis Otey and Woodi Washington). Although it's too early to put Wilhoite on commitment watch, the visit certainly strengthened Ohio State's position near the top of his leaderboard. Update 06/28/2018: With Garrett Wilson already in the fold and the Buckeyes in hot pursuit of Marcus Washington, Jameson Williams, and Elijah Higgins, Wilhoite became a Plan B recruit for Ohio State. Ohio State's stalling gave Oregon an opening and the Ducks pounced quickly, coming out of nowhere to land Wilhoite's commitment.

David Bell (Indianapolis IN Warren Central; 6'2" 185 lbs; #18 wide receiver; #104 overall)

The Hoosier State rarely produces top-100 talent and most of those top prospects end up leaving the state. That's good news for the Buckeyes, who are pursuing the top two prospects in Indiana in wide receiver David Bell and running back Sampson James (see above). Ohio State currently holds seven of the eight crystal balls, with Steve Wiltfong casting his lot with Michigan. A few other Big Ten schools (Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State) might also end up being players, but things look good for the scarlet and grey so far. Update 05/05/2018: Ohio State is still the crystal ball leader (60%), but Purdue is a surprising contender (40%) for Bell's services and rising fast. Update 06/10/2018: Ohio State remains the crystal ball leader (60%) and Bell is scheduled to make an unofficial visit to Columbus on June 15th. That visit should tell us a lot - is Bell an immediate "take" or a Plan-B guy who will have to wait and see what Washington, Williams, and Wilhoite do with respect to Ohio State. Update 07/05/2018: Even after an unofficial visit to Ohio State on June 15th, Bell remains on the Buckeyes' wait list, and he is now 78% crystal balled to Purdue.

Milton Wright (Louisville KY Christian Academy; 6'3" 190 lbs; #14 athlete; #146 overall)

Since the dynamic duo of Devin Smith and Michael Thomas led Ohio State to a national championship in 2014, the Buckeye coaching staff has been perpetually searching for the "next big thing" at wide receiver. Add Milton Wright to that ever-expanding list. Although listed as an "athlete" on 247 Sports, Wright will likely play wide receiver in college, and with a big frame and blazing speed he will likely succeed in that role. 247 Sports recruiting guru Steve Wiltfong just placed his crystal ball prediction on Ohio State, so you can probably put Milton Wright on commitment watch. Update 05/05/2018: Louisville (33% crystal balls) is making a push, but Ohio State (67% crystal balls) remains the leader here. Update 06/10/2018: The crystal balls have flipped dramatically in recent weeks, from 67% Ohio State to 60% Louisville, as the Buckeye staff pursues other top WR targets. Wright is scheduled to camp at Ohio State on June 16th, and if the visit actually happens, then we should have a much clearer picture of Wright's status with the Buckeyes. Update 07/05/2018: Another Plan B guy who will likely not be part of the Buckeyes' Class of 2019. Wright is currently expected to commit to Louisville (67% of crystal balls).

Trey Knox (Mufreesoboro TN Blackman; 6'4" 190 lbs; #33 wide receiver; #193 overall)

Knox is a high school teammate of 2018 Ohio State running back signee Master Teague and the Buckeyes are Trey's dream team, and these two factors make Ohio State the early crystal ball frontrunner (83%). However, there are a lot of very talented wide receivers on Ohio State's early board so it remains to be seen how seriously the staff will pursue Knox. Home state school Tennessee is also in the mix (17% crystal balls) along with Clemson ("warmer" status) and Notre Dame (recent Junior Day visit). Update 05/05/2018: Knox took an unofficial visit to Ohio State on April 5th, and the Buckeyes remain at the top of his list (80% crystal balls), with home-state Tennessee still in the mix (20% crystal balls). Update 06/10/2018: Ohio State is fading here (down to 60% crystal balls), but in reality it could be that Knox is the one who is fading. The Buckeyes just don't seem to be all that interested in Knox, and the staff are currently focusing their efforts elsewhere (Washington, Williams, Wilhoite, and Bell). Update 07/05/2018: You can pretty much count the Buckeyes out of this race. Tennessee (44% of crystal balls) and Arkansas (33%) will be duking this one out while Ohio State chases bigger targets.

TIGHT END

NEW Brenton Strange (Parkersburg WV Parkersburg; 6'4" 210 lbs; #25 tight end; #540 overall)

Some experts wondered whether Ohio State would sign a single tight end in the Class of 2019, but during the month of June the Buckeyes extended two offers at that position. Brenton Strange made his first unofficial visit to Ohio State on June 4th; returned to camp on June 12th and earned his Buckeye offer; and came back once more on June 22nd for Friday Night Lights. During that brief span, Ohio State became the prohibitive favorite (all six crystal balls), so it just might be time to pencil Strange into this class.

NEW Cormontae Hamilton (Memphis TN Whitehaven; 6'1" 256 lbs; #35 tight end; #928 overall)

Hamilton first journeyed up to Ohio State on April 14th to check out the Buckeyes' Spring Game. Hamilton then made it back to Columbus two months later for Friday Night Lights, where he earned an offer (but perhaps not an OFFER) and Ohio State earned a crystal ball (one of three, the other two being split for Louisville and Cloudy State). Strange's highlight reel shows that he has some serious receiving skills, but at 6-foot-1 and 256 pounds, he doesn't fit the template for the prototype tight end. In my mind, he's built more like a quick defensive tackle a la current Buckeye Robert Landers. In any event, Strange is big and athletic, so the staff would certainly find somewhere to play him.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN

Darnell Wright (Huntington WV Huntington; 6'6" 275 lbs; #1 offensive tackle; #2 overall)

The only other top-100 recruit (247 Composite) from West Virginia since 2004 is Doug Nester's fellow Huntington offensive tackle, Darnell Wright. In addition, Wright is the only five-star recruit from the Mountaineer State in the history of the 247 Composite that goes back to the year 2000. All five current crystal balls have Wright signing with Ohio State, although Alabama will probably be a player as well. Update 05/05/2018: To be quite honest, this one is trending away from Ohio State. Recent crystal balls have been cast in favor of Alabama and Tennessee. If a kid identifies with southern schools, then he likely will not end up at Ohio State. Update 06/10/2018: Even though Ohio State remains the crystal ball leader (62%), it feels like the Buckeyes have already lost this battle. The southern schools are trending (especially Alabama) and there has been no recent buzz for Ohio State. Update 07/05/2018: Wright made a surprise visit to Ohio State for Friday Night Lights and he left with the Buckeyes back amongst his top schools. In interviews after the visit, Wright claimed that he'd cooled on Ohio State because of his high school rivalry with fellow offensive lineman and Huntington native Doug Nester, a current Buckeye verbal. If Wright and Nester can bury whatever hatchets they possess, then Ohio State should be in great position to land both of these top-100 offensive tackles.

Devontae Dobbs (Belleville MI; 6'4" 270 lbs; #3 offensive tackle; #10 overall)

Devontae Dobbs is the top offensive tackle in the country, and at this early stage all of the crystal ball action is on Michigan State (91%, with 9% cloudy). Although the home state school is currently the overwhelming favorite, the reality is this - Michigan State rarely signs five-star recruits, home state or not. In fact, Michigan State has signed only four five-star recruits in the 20-year history of the 247 Composite, and the Spartans will have a difficult time landing Dobbs once the powerhouse programs start turning up the heat. And the current turmoil in East Lansing will not help Sparty's cause. The usual suspects - Ohio State, Alabama, and Clemson - will all make Dobbs a top priority. Update 05/05/2018: Michigan State remains the prohibitive favorite (85% crystal balls), but Ohio State has the most recent crystal prediction in its favor. The longer this goes on, the less likely Dobbs ends up committing to Sparty, which is obviously good news for the Buckeyes. Update 06/10/2018: This is the opposite situation from Darnell Wright. Although Michigan State is the prohibitive favorite (86%), I just can't see a five-star, top-ten prospect ending up in East Lansing. Ohio State is currently running in second, which is probably the best place to be for the time being. Update 06/25/2018: Dobbs committed to Michigan State. Now let's see if this commitment sticks....

Xavier Truss (Warwick RI Bishop Hendricken; 6'7" 325 lbs; #14 offensive tackle; #103 overall)

Xavier Truss is a perfect example of Rivals southern bias. While 247 Sports has Truss as a four-star prospect, the #10 offensive tackle, and the #63 recruit overall, Rivals has the kid un-starred and un-ranked. Needless to say, Rivals is way out of line, as Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, and Oklahoma are all in hot pursuit of this massive tackle prospect. Since January 5th, Penn State has gained nine crystal balls and they are the unanimous favorite, which probably means that this recruiting battle will be over rather soon. Update 05/05/2018: Truss recently made the rounds of Big Ten schools for some unofficial visits - Michigan (April 14th), Ohio State (April 16th), and Penn State (April 21st). At this point, there is nothing to suggest that Ohio State is a legitimate contender, and Penn State has all the crystal balls in its favor (14 predictions). Update 06/10/2018: Ohio State will sign a very good group of offensive lineman in the class of 2019, but Xavier Truss won't be one of them. Penn State keeps piling up crystal balls (now 17 for 17), so it's only a matter of time. Update 06/17/2018: Truss made a visit to Georgia and before he left town he was a Bulldog, shocking not only the 17 experts who had him crystal balled to Penn State but the entire recruiting world!!!

Zeke Correll (Cincinnati OH Anderson; 6'3" 270 lbs; #9 offensive guard; #164 overall)

Zeke Corell is one of the few interior offensive linemen that Ohio State is pursuing in the class of 2019. The Buckeyes currently have 88% of the crystal balls in their favor, and if the staff pushes for Correll they should get a commitment from him. If there is no room at the Buckeye Inn, then Notre Dame (the remaining 12% of crystal balls), Kentucky (family ties), Michigan State, and Penn State should be strong contenders for his services. Update 05/05/2018: In the past week, the crystal balls on Correll have shifted dramatically, from 83% in favor of Ohio State to 60% in favor of Notre Dame. It's probably time to put The Irish on commitment watch. Update 06/10/2018: Correll will make an official visit to Ohio State on June 22nd, and that will probably be the Buckeyes' last chance to sway him away from Notre Dame (75% of crystal balls). Stay tuned, but don't get your hopes up just yet. Update 06/18/2018: As expected, Correll committed to Notre Dame.

Jonathan Allen (Dayton OH Dunbar; 6'6" 320 lbs; #43 offensive tackle; #461 overall)

Allen is currently a 3-star prospect, but he is quickly rising up the recruiting rankings due to his elite athleticism for a guy his size. Back in December, Allen earned offers from Wisconsin and Michigan State - two programs that know a little something about developing offensive linemen. Ohio State recently jumped into the fray with an offer, and the Buckeyes quickly picked up seven crystal balls (100%) in their favor. Allen making an unofficial visit to Columbus this weekend, so put his on commitment watch. Update 06/10/2018: Allen made another unofficial visit to Ohio State this weekend (his third this calendar year), but still no commitment. Is this a case of the staff slow playing a sleeper recruit, or is Allen just waiting for the right time to pull the trigger? Update 07/05/2018: Allen remains 100% crystal balled to Ohio State, but where's the commitment? With Dobbs, Truss, and Correll now off the board, Allen should become a priority recruit. Is it just a matter of time, or is Ohio State still slow-playing Allen for some reason?

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN

Zach Harrison (Lewis Center OH Olentangy; 6'5" 225 lbs; #2 weakside defensive end; #3 overall)

I've followed recruiting since the class of 1984, Chris Spielman's recruiting class. In fact, I began following recruiting because of Chris Spielman, the definition of a "can't miss" prospect - All American, national player of the year, Wheaties box, etc. Since 1984, there have been only a handful of "can't miss" prospects from Ohio - Robert Smith, Orlando Pace, Charles Woodson, Andy Katzenmoyer, Ted Ginn, Beanie Wells. It looks like defensive end Zach Harrison is the next "can't miss" prospect to hail from the Buckeye State. Harrison is a consensus 5-star prospect who already looks NFL ready. Ohio State is the early leader with all nine crystal balls going the Buckeyes' way so far. Update 05/05/2018: Ohio State is still the 100% crystal ball choice (12 predictions), but there is some chatter that Penn State has entered the mix. Update 06/10/2018: Harrison will make his official visit to Ohio State on June 23rd, right on the heels of his official visit to Michigan (June 21st). At that point, Harrison will have made officials to all three of his top schools (Penn State, April 20th) and a decision should soon follow. The Buckeyes are still the overwhelming favorites (all 14 crystal balls), but you can never take a kid like this for granted, even if he does live in the heart of Buckeye Nation. Update 07/05/2018: Ohio State keeps picking up crystal balls (now 16 for 16), but Harrison claims that his official visits to Penn State, Michigan, and Ohio State have left him more confused than ever about his college choice. Is this a typical bluff designed to generate interest in his recruitment, or should all those crystal balls read "cloudy" instead? Stay tuned....

Jowon Briggs (Cincinnati OH Walnut Hills; 6'3" 275 lbs; #4 defensive tackle; #72 overall)

Jowon Briggs appears to be the Buckeyes' top target at defensive tackle for the class of 2019, but Notre Dame is the early front runner (80% of crystal balls, including all of the most recent). It's still very early, of course, and if the Irish lose steam then Ohio State (20% of crystal balls), Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Alabama will be in hot pursuit. Update 05/05/2018: Basically no change here, as Ohio State (25% crystal balls) still trails Notre Dame (75% crystal balls). Update 06/10/2018: It's really hard to say what's going on with Jowon Briggs, as the kid simply doesn't talk about his recruitment. With that being said, most of the crystal balls (75%) point to Notre Dame, so until further notice expect Briggs to be a Golden Domer in the end. Update 06/22/2018: Here's another case where the scryers got it all wrong, as Briggs committed to Virginia over the presumed favorite Notre Dame.

Tyler Davis (Apopka FL Wekiva; 6'2" 261 lbs; #10 defensive tackle; #165 overall)

A name that you probably haven't heard much of is Tyler Davis, a defensive tackle prospect from Florida. Davis has already made two unofficial visits to Ohio State (FNL, MSU game) and his lone crystal ball (from December of 2017) is on Ohio State. Florida is also a school of interest, and Miami recently entered the ring with an offer (January 18th). With Ohio State having made very few defensive tackle offers to date, Davis might have a real shot to end up in the Buckeyes' class of 2019. Update 05/05/2018: Since the original post, Davis has made another unofficial visit to Ohio State, and received three more crystal balls, one each for Ohio State, Florida, and Florida State. Ohio State's probably still the leader, if the staff is genuinely interested.... Update 06/10/2018: Ohio State is riding a crystal ball wave here (73%), and it's looking more and more likely that Davis will be the Buckeyes' defensive tackle signee in the class of 2019. Update 07/05/2018: Davis is now 80% crystal balled to Ohio State, but the Buckeyes recently sent out a couple new DT offers (see below).

NEW Etinosa Reuben (Riverside MO Park Hill South; 6'3" 275 lbs; #27 strongside defensive end; #422 overall)

Reuben made an official visit to Ohio State for Friday Night Lights, but there has been little buzz about that visit. But that's not necessarily a negative thing, because there has been very little buzz about Reuben's recruitment, period (no top-whatever list; no crystal balls). Reuben has also quietly made official visits to Wisconsin and Georgia, so those schools should also be considered serious contenders along with Ohio State.

NEW Jared Harrison-Hunte (Middle Village NY Christ the King; 6'4" 286 lbs; #33 defensive tackle; #523 overall)

Harrison-Hunte made an unofficial visit to Ohio State for Friday Night Lights and promptly earned himself an offer (but maybe not an OFFER). Harrison-Hunte called the Buckeye offer a "game changer" and that comment earned Ohio State a crystal ball (33%). Penn State (67%) remains the leader in the crystal ball sweepstakes, but this rapidly rising prospect will probably end up taking some official visits this fall before deciding on a school.

LINEBACKERS

Kane Patterson (Nashville TN Christ Presbyterian Academy; 6'1" 212 lbs; #15 outside linebacker; #194 overall)

Kane Patterson is a fast-rising prospect from a small school (about a hundred kids per class) who has received four major offers in the past two weeks (Ohio State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Missouri). Although Kane's 247 Composite rankings are rather low, 247 Sport's own rankings place him as the #7 outside linebacker and #105 overall prospect in the country. If Patterson can somehow maintain his sleeper status for the next eleven months, then Ohio State looks to be in a good position to sign him. If as expected his recruitment continues to blow up, then a lot of southern schools will undoubtedly get involved. This could be one of the more interesting recruiting battles for the class of 2019. Update 05/05/2018: Patterson made a two-day unofficial visit with his entire family to Ohio State at the end of March (always a good sign), and the Buckeyes look like they are in good position to get an official visit this fall. Update 06/10/2018: Patterson is scheduled to make an unofficial visit to Ohio State this month (the 6th or the 14th, depending on which source you want to believe), and then to make his announcement sometime in August. Patterson has been very quiet concerning his recruitment (no list of favorites, no crystal balls), but the Buckeyes seem to be right in the thick of things. Update 07/05/2018: Alabama has picked up one crystal ball for Patterson, but his recruitment remains one of the more difficult to predict. Expect Patterson to continue to go through the process quietly and make a low-key announcement sometime this fall.

Lance Dixon (West Bloomfield MI; 6'2" 195 lbs; #21 outside linebacker; #329 overall)

This looks to be a classic Big Ten East battle, with Michigan State (83% of crystal balls), Michigan (17% of crystal balls), Ohio State, and Penn State all being early favorites. Urban Meyer just made a visit to West Bloomfield (January 31st) and personally delivered an offer, so the Buckeyes are definitely interested. All of the crystal ball action occurred before the Buckeyes became involved, so it will be interesting to see if we get any "flips" to Ohio State in the upcoming weeks. Update 05/05/2018: Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State continue to be the favorites, with Sparty probably being the leader. Update 06/10/2018: Dixon recently released a top five of Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin (official visit June 15th), and Ohio State. I deliberately put Ohio State fifth on Dixon's list, because the Buckeyes just aren't recruiting him all that hard right now. Of course things could change, but don't expect Dixon to be part of Ohio State's class of 2019. Update 07/01/2018: It was pretty obvious that Dixon would not be a Buckeye, but it remained to be seen which other Big Ten school would land his services. In the end, Penn State beat out Michigan State, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Jordan Battle (Fort Lauderdale FL St. Thomas Aquinas; 6'1" 187 lbs; #10 safety; #173 overall)

Like Nick Cross, Battle is looking for a spot in the Buckeye secondary, but will there be any room? Battle has named Ohio State his favorite and all twelve crystal balls are on the Buckeyes, but the staff has already accepted verbals from three prospects who could project at safeties at the college level (Ronnie Hickman, Steele Chambers, Bryson Shaw). Jordan is supposed to take an official visit to Columbus in early June. If that visit happens, then put him on commitment watch. Update 06/10/2018: And we are about to reach the moment of truth: Jordan Battle will make an official visit to Ohio State on June 22nd. Unless Battle commits a major faux pas during his visit (felony arrest, drunken stupor, wearing Michigan gear), then he will return to Florida a Buckeye. There are very few sure things in recruiting, but Battle to Ohio State is one of them. Update 06/29/2018: The lead pipe cinch 50-star lock of the century paid off, as Battle committed to Ohio State on June 29th.

Woodi Washington (Murfreesboro TN Oakland; 5'11" 175 lbs; #19 cornerback; #191 overall)

Woodi Washington has been on Ohio State's radar for quite a while, but a visit this past weekend was the first quality contact between the two parties. And quality contact it must have been, as the Buckeyes have already picked up two crystal balls in their favor. Of course, a great visit is just the beginning and the Buckeye staff will have to keep working this relationship in order to secure a commitment. Update 07/05/2018: Ohio State picked up two quick crystal balls after a June unofficial visit, but Oklahoma has earned the next three. It looks like the Buckeyes might be going in a different direction at cornerback (Peyton Powell?).

ATHLETES

Craig Young (Ft. Wayne IN Wayne; 6'5" 200 lbs; #95 wide receiver; #721 overall)

Young was offered by Ohio State on January 29th, and after making two unofficial visits to Columbus in April he named the Buckeyes his leader. The crystal balls reflect that fact, with the two most recent going in Ohio State's direction (40% overall). The question is this: Is Young a "take" at this relatively early stage of the game? Young has the size you can't teach, but he is a raw prospect right now (hence the low ranking on the 247 composite). The Buckeyes have taken some reaches at wide receiver in recent years (Chris Olave in 2018, Elijah Gardiner in 2017), but those guys got offered very late in the process. Update 06/10/2018: Ohio State recently lost a crystal ball, as it seems that Young will be a Plan-B recruit for the time being. With so many top WR prospects still on the Buckeyes' board, Young will have to wait a while to see if he can move into the "take" category. Purdue (50% CB) and Indiana (17% CB) look to be more likely destinations for Young. Update 06/15/2018: Question: Why did it seem like Craig Young was falling down the Buckeyes' wide receiver board? Answer: Because the Buckeyes were recruiting him as a defensive player. After a great camp performance on June 12th, Young solidified his Buckeye offer and shortly thereafter committed to Ohio State. Now the only question is this: Where does he play? Young seems too rangy for defensive back and too lean for defensive end, so linebacker appears to be his most likely position (and Ohio State could certainly use a linebacker in this class).

NEW Peyton Powell (Odessa TX Permian; 6'2" 182 lbs; #37 athlete; #444 overall)

Powell is an under-the-radar recruit who made a surprising official visit to Ohio State for the Buckeyes' huge Friday Night Lights recruiting weekend. Powell came away from that visit all Buckeye, and the Buckeyes came away with eleven crystal balls in their favor (including two flips from the Texas Longhorns and key predictions from Bill Kurelic and Alex Gleitman). It looks like this one is just about over. Depending on how the rest of this class shakes out, Powell could be slotted for cornerback or wide receiver.

Wandale Robinson (Frankfort KY Western Hill; 5'9" 179 lbs; #5 all-purpose back; #626 overall)

Robinson actively pursued an Ohio State offer for months, and on May 23rd that offer finally materialized. Robinson is diminutive but very quick and shifty with breakaway speed and quite a bit of power for his size. He also has adequate receiving skills. Robinson would clearly fill the Curtis Samuel role at Ohio State, should he elect to become a Buckeye. Robinson makes an unofficial visit to Ohio State on June 14th, a move which could go a long way toward cementing the relationship between the two sides. If that visit goes well, then it's probably safe to pencil Robinson into this class. Update 07/05/2018: The relationship between Ohio State and Robinson heated up quickly, but now it seems to be in a cooling off phase. The seven crystal balls cast for Robinson are split equally among Kentucky, Duke, and Ohio State, with one ball reading "cloudy". If Robinson becomes a "take" for Ohio State, then the Buckeyes would have to be considered the leader.

To follow is a plausible Ohio State recruiting class of 2019, based on current crystal ball projections (along with an occasional bit of inside information). This is not necessarily who I think will end up at Ohio State, and it is definitely not my "dream team".

Is it just me or does it seem like we are not filling the Oline in? I was expecting 6 guys this class and four seems more plausible at this point. Is 2020 better in that regard and that’s why? ND seems to be plucking Ohio when it comes to top OLine players.

2020 class for interior line could potentially be the best in a long time. Rogers and Wypler would be, and looks like it will be, the best interior class in the nation. Add in Paris and the quality of the OL will be as good as it gets.

ND gets OH players mainly from catholic schools and/or from wealthy suburbs. It's always been this way, and won't change anytime soon.

Despite his ranking, Munford already cracked the two-deep, played in meaningful snaps in The Game as a true freshman, and looks like the starting LT going into this season as a sophomore.

There is no reason to think Davis and Myers won’t be starting on the interior sooner rather than later.

I think in an ideal world the coaches would like to add Wright and Allen in the ‘19 class.

In a realistic world I think they might only add Allen, who looks like a Munford clone and will hopefully far exceed his rankings.

The ‘19 OL class will obviously be more disappointing if they miss on Wright, but they look to be in great shape either way, and with Wright it would be almost too good to believe, in my opinion.

So, I for one am not worried about it.

It’s interesting because you might still be in the Tressel/Warriner mindset where you expect to miss on a whole bunch of the OL you bring in.

We are currently recruiting at such a high level here that hopefully that is no longer the case.

I mean, is there any reason (right now) to think that Petite-Frere, Davis, Jones, Myers, Munford won’t be the starting five in ‘19, ‘20?

If anyone jumps them even better, because that someone beat out a damn good player. And if an early departure disrupts that lineup, that’s probably also a good thing.

I felt during the first few years of the Meyer era that OLine was a little behind the other position groups as far as finding elite talent. Kinda like DT. But, no longer the case for either. Because Urb is now beating coaches for those recruiting battles too.

I know there was a thought early on we would bring 5 if not 6 Olinemen in this year. Five appears to still be possible based on your list.

It doesn’t seem like we are that deep and we have seen some attrition in the last year. I would love having a solid second string here on the chance someone goes down.
