Best pizza Ive ever had is Lombardi's in Little Italy, NYC. I believe its the oldest pizzaria in the US. Consistently the best.

In difference to everyone in Columbus, coming from the NYC metro, during my college years in Cbus I never found a decent pizza. IMO, I really think pizza is like beer in that it does not transport well geographically because of local influences. In the case of beer, its because of the local water supply. In the case of scotch, its because of the peat. In the case of sourdough, its because of the local yeasts. Pizza seems to be the same way. Just never found a NY tasting pizza outside of NY.....

meh. lombardi's is a fine place for tourists. it used to be great at least five years ago. they've changed since then, and the quality has unfortunately gone way downhill. i can think of at least five other pizza places in the boroughs that i'd rather go. off the top of my head: napoletana, luzzo's, totonno's, patsy's, and johnny's (my favorite; in mount vernon).

i'll put it this way:

if i'm recommending a pizza place to a tourist, it's definitely lombardi's (or grimaldi's). however, if i'm recommending a pizza place to someone who wants the best pie possible, it's johnny's... and it's not even close. good luck with the service, though. it's often horrible and uninviting.

That's ridiculous.

If people want the best pizza place, give it to them.

Sounds like you're being a pretentious asshole otherwise.
cut your pills in half there, chief. it's not as though they couldn't make a decision for themselves. i've had a number of friends and family members who have stayed with me and visited nyc for the first time. a number of them want to get pizza during their stay. heck, close to all of them make a point of getting "new york style" pizza. i then ask if they would rather have good pizza from our nation's first pizzeria, which they have already heard of, or great pizza from a pizzeria that almost no one outside of the tri-state area has heard of (johnny's). the answer is invariably lombardi's.

figures that a guy who started a "favorite gravy" thread would flip out over something like this.
