Bitching about the 2004 Season

I thought so too, Mili. With all the crap he's gotten from OSU fans the last few years, this was his best chance to blast us. Thankfully he didn't and he actually answered the question seriously and honestly.

agree mili could have slammed the shit out of us but the big thing said here was you don't replace 14 players drafted over night. I think some of us forget how young we are, we just have expectations as part of the bucknation and when not met or exceeded we get a little fired up.

Amen...people have questioned why Miami, FSU, etc can "relaod year after year.

Basically, IMHO, we have been rebuilding the O-line since JT's arrival. It takes at least 4-5 years to get an OL program where it can just reload. OL recruiting is the biggest crapshoot in recruiting. A thin cupboard to start with, a few players who don't pan out, injuries, youth, and so forth...the OL depth is not where it should be yet...

It all starts up front. Patience is all we need for now

[sarcasm]I can't believe you people. Why knock Boeckman? I heard from my brother's friend's cousin's sister's former-boyfriend's pet dog's owner's ex-wife that Boeckman was blowing away everyone in practice. He should play, he would obviously solve all of our problems.[/sarcasm]

disclaimer: This is not a shot over any one person's bow, I just think it's hilarious.

I think good coaching makes O-line recruiting less of a crapshoot. About half of the guys that my coaches brought in in college ended up being serviceable at least. About a quarter of them washed out. Out of my recruiting class we had one 3.5 year starter, one 3 year starter, one 2 year starter from a JUCO, I started 14 games, and we had another JUCO guy that started 3-4 games. Only 1 guy washed out. We had a really good coach the first couple years though.

Maybe what i am about to express here, may sound a little dumb but last night, i broke out the tape of the "Undefeated 1968 Buckeyes" and in that tape ex-running back Larry Zelena stated that the 68' group of sophmores were the most talented bunch of kids mixed in with all the juniors and seniors that he has ever witnessed at Ohio State and that Woody Hayes found a way to utilize all those players to help bring the National Championship that year. Plus he also said that the year of 1968 and 1969 Ohio State Buckeyes had an exceptional bunch of young coaches which also contributed in the sucess.

Well it made me think that maybe the problem right now is that we have an over abundance of talent on the team and we are not utilizing in the way that all of us are expecting or maybe it is that Tressel, at YSU was very good at developing less caliber players compared to what he has at Ohio State.

The players we have now are either very good or they do not like some of the techiques or schemes that they are being taught. Also at YSU Tressel had less players to deal with. Am I way off base here in my thinking here or does it make any sense at all.......

I disagree with the O-line assesment and recruiting. There are ALOT of big guys out there now whether they're all studs is a diferent story. However if you go to Minneasota, Iowa, or even Purdue for that matter you'll find teams that don't particularly get the BIG NAME recruits but still produce very fine players. The reason some of us may think oh well they don't pan out, or lack of good players, or just slump years in recruiting is because our team hasn't been able to do anything in the trenches for the past 3 years (besides our D-Lines). This is just a lack of fundamentals and just straight up coaching. I believe some years there's down years in recruiting with all positions but you can always coach a player to get where you want him to be. There's just no reason with proper coaching that you can't get down there with the boys teach them the right stuff and see them PROGRESS over the next year or so. It should only take you 1-2 years tops to build depth and create a situation where you just reload not 4 years.

It takes far longer to rebuild a depleted OL than one or two years, especially when starting from scratch.

after the 03 crop of OL departed, the cupboard was essentially bare. all you have to do is look at osu's current 2 deep at OL. There are 3 of 10 spots held by walk-ons, or former walk-ons. that clearly indicates that osu's OL depth is lacking at this point. The '04 recruiting class was a major step in the right direction. The '05 class is super as well.

look at the remainder of the 2 deep, aside from mangold and simms, nobody had any sort of tangible PT coming into this season. Coleman was a converted TE, and Shaffer was a converted DE. Barton is coming off of a redshirt year, and downing has seen 0 time as well.

you cant legitimately claim any of the kids that are just seeing the field for the first time this year busts. simms may be slightly under-achieving, but he is a LT by necessity. He was an interior lineman in hs i do believe, or at least he was recruited as one. Mangold has been the most consistent of the OL crop this year, which isnt saying much. But he is only hurt by having undersized, yet over-achieving kne on one side, and first year starter datish on the other.

in all, it usually take about 2 years to get an OL ready to see the field. That is why it is going to take time to rebuild at osu. it is certainly not something that can be done in one year. depth by numbers doesnt equal quality depth.
