Men's basketball: Miller back with Matta as Ohio State assistant
Wednesday, July 9, 2008
By Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

During John Groce's pursuit of the men's basketball coaching job at Ohio University, Brandon Miller was hardly a disinterested observer.

Groce and Miller shared an office while working for Thad Matta at Xavier, and their bond extended beyond X's and O's. So Miller was naturally happy that Groce became a head coach.

"I couldn't be more happy for John -- not because I'm sitting where I'm sitting but because he's a great friend and he's got a great opportunity," Miller said.

But Miller was sitting where he was, the Ohio State basketball office, because of Groce's departure. As expected, Miller has been hired as a Buckeyes assistant coach.

Miller served as the Buckeyes' director of basketball operations for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons and as the video coordinator in 2006-07 when Ohio State reached the national championship game.

He left after that season for Butler, his alma mater, to become an assistant coach. Now he's back.

"I couldn't be more excited," Miller said. "Last week when Thad called me and presented me the opportunity to come back to Ohio State, I sat down with my family and we were overjoyed."

Link please or did you just hear this on the radio..

If it wasn't true I wouldn't have posted it... There were enough rumors that I felt ok disclosing the news. (I know you're doing your moderator job... sorry; I should have stated that I couldn't reveal the source)

(Miller was chosen before the "Groce to OU" news broke publicly... Groce told Matta he wanted Miller, and Matta told Groce he was going to get Miller). I kept my mouth shut until it leaked to other media...

As many know I have "contacts" scattered around tOSU, and cannot disclose their names...

in the future just say youve heard it from the ups girl.

or just politely remind us that youve heard from a person you consider reliable. no need to play the super secret sources. id say present it like it is, good information that is unconfirmed. most of us are happy with that type of info...

"It's not something required," Miller said. "I'm not told to punch in and punch out at a certain time throughout the day. I put some of this on myself in terms of having it consume me."

The life dictated by a career in college coaching slowly took its toll on Brandon Miller as the Ohio State men's basketball assistant watched his wife and growing young sons do more things without him.

He said he missed vacations with them. His older son, who turns 4 next month, started playing T-ball this spring, and he wasn't always there for that.

"It wasn't one thing that I missed. It was the things that added up," Miller said today in explaining the surprising news of his resignation from Thad Matta's staff yesterday.

Miller, 32, spent eight years in the profession and seven of those working for Matta at Xavier and Ohio State. Before that, he played for Matta at Butler.

He said he has been discussing the issue with Matta for about a month but wrestling with it himself longer.

"It's definitely a decision I didn't make spur of the moment. It's a decision that has been on my mind for a while, and when I say awhile, (I mean) months. It is a decision based on things that have built up," Miller said.

"I look at my life and the first thing that I want to accomplish when it's all said and done is I want to be a very good husband and I want to be a terrific father, and my next opportunity in terms of what I want to do is going to be outside of basketball and it's going to be in a situation where I can have more balance in my life."

Groce turns to Ohio State for aide
Wed, 05/16/2012
The News-Gazette

CHAMPAIGN ? Former Ohio State assistant Brandon Miller is expected to join John Groce's basketball staff at Illinois.

Miller's position likely would be assistant to the head coach ? the post previously slated for Ramon Williams, who accepted an assistant coaching position at Virginia Tech.

Miller arrived in C-U on Wednesday. The New Castle, Ind., native and Butler graduate is quite familiar with this basketball territory.

He was on Thad Matta's staff at Ohio State from 2005-07 and 2008-11. He also was an assistant at Butler in 2007-08. In three seasons as a standout guard at Butler, Miller scored more than 1,000 points and helped the Bulldogs to the Sweet 16.

Butler rehires Brandon Miller
Updated: April 10, 2013
Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler has hired Brandon Miller as an assistant coach.

He replaces Matthew Graves, who has taken the head coaching job at South Alabama.

Miller is a familiar name around Hinkle Fieldhouse. He graduated from Butler in 2003 after winning three league championships, scoring more than 1,100 points and was the top scorer on Butler's 2002-03 team, the first to reach the NCAA tournament's round of 16 in more than four decades.

He spent one season as Thad Matta's video intern at Xavier, then followed Matta to Ohio State. After three seasons as video coordinator and director of basketball operations, Miller returned to Butler as an assistant in 2007-08. He went back to Ohio State for three more seasons before spending last season as special assistant to Illinois coach John Groce.
