Buckeye Defensive Line - 2005 (official thread)

I'm a little surprised at the optimism regarding this defense being as good at the NC D or some of the past. I'm very concerned about the play of the D-Line, we didn't get consistant pressure on the QB last year and our best pass rusher is now gone. We also had some trouble stopping the run.

While I think we have a ton of talent, there appears be a lack of it stepping up. When David Patterson got here I thought he was gonna be the next Darrion Scott, I thought Kudla would be a great speed rusher, shows ya what I know.

I thought this article from the Ozone might get a little more talk
As far as the defensive line goes, Heacock indicated that he is not yet pleased with that group, but there are a few guys making a move.

"Jay has looked good at times, he's looked real good at times," said Heacock.

"Vernon Gholstin looks good at times, Quinn (Pitcock) and Marcus Green), they're solid. I think they're good inside.

"Dave Paterson looks good at times.

"Alex Barrow is probably the guy that's really surprised everybody and really probably stepped up as much and has put himself in a position to say he needs to be on the field," Heacock said.

I'm really hoping someone will step up, with our LB's and DB's we really could have a special year.

Maybe TGII can do it, some people on here have him playing every position right now as it is

2005 Buckeye Defensive Line (official thread)

there was just a new thread on the o-line so lets give the d-line some love

this unit really came on strong last year, especially the last two games, they are at worst a solid unit with the potential to be great

Quinn Pitcock(6'3" 295)-should be all big-ten, unusually athletic for a tackle(ive read that he has a 38" vertical), probably the best defender on the line

Marcus Green(6'3" 290)-not on the same level at Pitcock but hes in the best shape of his life and is ready to finish his average career on a high note, good at standing ground and can take on double teams

Mike Kudla(6'3" 265)-mammoth in the weight room, sets lifting records, too bad that doesnt always translate to the field, i think he has a breakout year, he has all the physical tools to do so, all big ten???

Jay Richardson(6'6" 270)-i think he gets the starting job, great size for an end and i think he has great potential, however ive heard that he doesnt always show interest

this unit has excellant depth, with abdallah(who will be a stud in time), cotton, schafer, and penton all possible rotating in at tackle

at end the backups are young but still can get the job done, led by patterson, gholston, and barrow, of course if they cant get the job done we do have three stellar ends coming in that can push for time

this unit has tons of potential and can be underrated by many, if this line does what i think it is capable of doing it will be one of the best in the nation

sorry if theres already a thread or if this isnt up to expectations, i jus had time on my hands and cant wait till the season kicks off

One of the biggest disappointments last season was the perforamnce of Patterson. Here was a kid who played as a Frosh when OSU was neck deep in experienced and talented DL. I interpreted that as a sign would be lucky to keep him for four years, let alone five. Certainly his credentials out of HS signaled such (#4 rated DT). And as a Frosh he was outstanding. Last season I didn't see the progression I was expecting. Not sure how severe his injury situation was, but if that was the problem and he comes back healthy and on track he will be moving somebody to second team in a hurry.

kudla was hurt much of last year if I remember correctly... as in not 100%. I think I remember Danielson mentioning that during The Game, and how he was wreaking havoc finally.

Should be interesting to see if Worthington or Wilson make any impact on the 2 deep at DE.

You also have to wonder how long it really took him to recover from that terrible illness. My brother had kidney stones one summer and it was a full year before he felt like he was 100% physically.

The fake field goal in the Alamo Bowl really showcased Pitcocks speed, he ran down a reciever! :yow2:

And it's not like he had that great of an angle either, it was basically just straight to the sideline and Pitcock and the reciever (along with Schlegel) got there at the same time.

The fake field goal was with 12:00 left in the third quarter in case anyone wants to refresh their memory, it really is quite impressive.

I think all of our eggs are in one DT basket....Pitcock and Green. Both have to stay healthy, and both have to keep their motors going full time. Pitcock will attract double teams. Green has to make them pay for it. I believe that Patterson is our only other impact DT on the roster....if he's healthy, which we haven't seen in over a year. It may be that his knees won't be able to handle the added weight that he requires to play inside.

I once thought that that we had great depth at DT. Maupin is gone. Cotton's unlimited potential is unrealized. Penton seems like a career back-up to me. We don't know about Nader yet.

As for DE, Kudla is solid at one end, but don't expect the spectacular. We have to have 2 of the 6 DEs step up BIG as a rush end. Let's face it, we got nothing from the DE position last year in terms of consistent backfield pressure. I'll go with Richardson and Gholston to start the year at the other end.

Go Bucks!

i dont think itll happen but there is a possibilty for gholston to start which i think would be great, because in order for him to do that he has to really show the coaches something for him to start over the upper classmen
