Buckeye Defensive Line - 2005 (official thread)

The last couple of games last year Kudla was destroying O-linemen from Michigan and Okie St. Remember that Michigan and Okie St. have two of the best O-lines in the game. A healthy Kudla will be a force on the D-line. If we get 1-2 compliments to him on the other side we are going to have a great line.

pitcock is really athletic for a defensive tackle, most recievers and defensive backs dont even have 38" verticles, i wonder what his 40 is i bet its way below the average for a DT
Pittcock's 40 time was listed at 4.9 -- that was a while back though, he may have added a step since his early days.

Anyway -- his speedand athletic ability in play are what count.

As much as it pains me to watch this play, watch how Pitcock pursues all the way down the field on the big screen pass to Hart, and keeps up with the play. I'd say his "40 time" is quite a bit under a 4.9...

Don't worry about Pitcock's speed.....as I remember, he led his HS team in tackles on the kickoff team, routinely the first player down the field. He also had a ridiculous number of blocked punts/kicks, so his athleticism is a given.

My question on Quinn is will he continue to improve his ability to get off his OL, a la Kenny Peterson, in order to make an impact up the middle on the pass rush. He's already fine in the run game.

Go Bucks!

this line is really underrated, ive seen it in some magazines as the third best in the big ten but if they could play up to half of their potential then this could be among the best in the nation. Pitcock could be an all american and green and kudla could be all big ten, richardson has tons of potential and ive heard that hes really turning some heads, think about this, if our line could become a formidable front four, our linebackers who are already the nations best could control the entire game, we could have the best front 7 in all of college football, heck the linebackers alone would put us in that category

I agree with you on the under-rated part. (And Mili - that's a great clip of Pitcock showing on field speed and pursuit in play - so screw the old 40 numbers). Did draw up a sheet comparing the Tejas and tOSU stat's on the "2-deep" position by position in light of earlier references in the Sept 10 game thread to TExas' "overwhelming" speed. Didn't post it because most of the data is IMHO highly suspect, its either very old, or someone is posting a players personal best - not their typical level of performance. And, as Mili points out with the clip - on the field speed is again a different matter entirely.
As for our D-line what would really help us overall is improved DE play this year. We get that - and there is no stopping an already strong D -- for it greatly improves our chances of having a strong scoring defense.

Any such speed chart must be xray'ed before being posted.

Forget it, it'll get the 'xray' treatment afterwards anyway. :wink2:

i havent heard a single word from any texas fan on our d-line, hopefully Texas looks right by our line just like their fans, i liked what i saw out of them at the end of last season and we should only improve on that, texas has a great o-line and if our d-line shows up and plays like they are capable of then i dont honestly see how they can win this game at all, im not saying our line will dominate theirs but at the very least they will hold their own and occupy their blockers, letting our backers roam the field

His official best 40, on the big speed board is around 5 seconds. I work with a guy who's son played high school ball, and is very good friends with Quinn. His recollection of Quinn's speed is closer to the 4.7 second range. I don't know whether that is his actual speed, or whether the guy is just a compulsive liar, but either way, I know that Quinn is a very fast DT with mad hops. What I do know is that, unlike Kudla, Quinn is not a beast on the bench press. Piqua's football team uses the bigger faster stronger program for their strength and conditioning. That lends to ridiculous squat numbers, speed, and verticals.

osu's defensive front has got to be one of the most athletic in the big ten if not all of college football, i mean there arent any heffers on the line like a gabe watson or someone like that, i have posted in another thread about getting a couple bigger true tackles in the future but thats jus wishful thinking, there is nothing wrong with this line, kudla is a beast, pitcock could probably play linebacker, and marcus green has susposedly been training hard and is in the best shape of his life, keep in mind he is a senior and wants to really go out with a bang, lastly take a look at richardson, at 6'6" 270 he has the size and passes the look test, ive heard and read that hes taking this season alot more seriously than he ever has.

throw down

Milli - Ive seen that replay many times just to watch the center getting clocked by Salley. Your post made me watch Pitcock's speed and in doing so did you notice the Center throw Pitcock to the ground? To make it worse the freaking ref was watching it!!! Just wondered if anybody else noticed it..

Go Bucks

Defensive Line (merged)

I haven't seen the great DE play like we've had in the past with this team .. I feel it is missing. Do we have any current players who could blossom into (Will Smith, Vrabel, etc type players) what do you think !

Kudla may not be Will Smith, but he isn't chopped liver.

Wilson, (and Worthington) has promise written all over him.
