Buckeye Defensive Line - 2005 (official thread)

No, you are not wrong. Lack of impact DL's is what is missing from this team, and what separates a great defense (2002) from a good defense (2005).

Its a bit early to make that sweeping an assement. Texas is regarded as having the nations best offensive line. I think we will find that this defense is amongst the best in the nation. Kudla is doing well had 3 tackles. Beyond that The role the defense had the DL playing was one of contain. It kept Young from running wild on us. 52 yards came off 3 carries Young hand in 1st offensive series they had. That means that Young netted 24 yards on 17 carries after that first series.

I dont see how you can evaluate the team as lacking a good rush based on the clear mandate they had for the bulk of the game.

Our defense lacks a serious pass rush threat. If we develop one, this defense will start terrorizing opposing teams. Kudla is solid but not spectacular. It's the side opposite him where we need more production. Pitcock and Patterson were two highly recruited defensive linemen out of high school. Pitcock has turned out pretty good but Patterson has underachieved up to this point. Richardson has shown flashes in practice and some games but seems to have a motivational problem / lack of a motor. If he can unleash his attitude to go with that 6'6" 280# frame, watch out. Looking toward the future, Wilson, Worthington, and Williams (probably in that order) look to be the most promising. Hopefully guys like Abdallah and Gholston will also step up in the middle to complement the young edge rushers we have.

None of the DL's on this team has ever provided a consistent pass rush at any time in his career - that's how I can make that statement. Unless and until someone starts providing a pass rush from a DL position, I will stand by my comment.

I wish I could disagree. Eating blocks and keeping lineman off of the linebackers is all fine and good when you're talking about run defense. After Kudla, Patterson and Richardson the rest of the DEs are young. Kudla is probably the best pass rusher on the d-line right now. Hopefully one or more of the younger guys will step it up.

I think this may be a good year to switch to a 3-4 defense. The problem is that we wouldnt be able to do it with the personel wanted since DAndreas out tilla t least midseason, Freemans gone till Iowas game and the only other LB I can think of without using freshmen (Laurinaitis & Spitler) is Kerr. Kerr seems to be gradualling getting his knowledge together to start next year, but I dont think hes capable to try out something like this D, right now.

Ho wmuch did Wilson play Sat.? He seems like he could develop into a decent pass rusher............eventually.

Linebacker or not, if we can get pressure on the qb with Carp in a three, then we'll be in great shape.

I was extremely proud of the way our defense played, in particular the lb's. I might be p.i to say it, but I've got alot of friends (some scum fans) that questioned all the pub our lb's get. They mentioned that the big, slow white guys can't hang with a fast team. They proved to everyone Saturday that they are truely deserving of all the publicity they get.

Great job , guys !

:oh: :io:

Ok I will give you my break down of each individual lineman(you tell me agree of disagree)

Kudla- our most consistent pass rusher from the end spot. He is starting to use his strength and speed to rush the passer.

Pittcock - beast off the ball and he gets a bull rush pass rush knocking his guy back. I think he has trouble getting off his block to attack the qb, but occupies a gap. Great run stuffer.

Green - undersized, but not as quick as some would like. I think he has the same problem as Pittcock and he is not quite the run stuffer, but he does stay in his gap.

J Rich - Still working on realizing his potential. Just needs more time and a little better attitude.

Penton - see Green

Patterson - too big to be a speed rusher, should be inside, but plays outside b/c he is more talented than the young guys.

Gholston, Barrow, Wilson, Worthington - all have loads of potential to be the Will Smith we are looking for, just need time.

Overall - The d-line has one legitiment sack threat, but does a hell of a job stopping the run and keeping guys off our backers.

Also we can't really judge them after the Texas game, b/c Texas o-line is very good and you approach a qb like Young different than other guys.

Not to mention its only been 2 games so far this season. 1st was against a Miami team that we knew wouldnt put up too much of a fight for all 4 quarters and a Texas squad that does have the best lines in the nation. I think I will reserve some judgement till mid conference play.

The next AA on that line (if there is one) is Quinn Pitcock. He's got the size, the instincts, and the speed. He's the biggest disrupter on that line, and he does it all from the inside. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read somewhere he had 7 1/2 sacks last year at DT, and I believe that was the most of anyone on the D-line last year... as a sophomore. Should be on some pre-season AA lists next year as a senior.

I think Kudla is a hell of a player, and I'm excited to see how his senior year unfolds. One thing's for sure: he'll break some NFL Draft combine records in weightlifting next year. Marcus Green is still a mystery to me. I hear Penton's name called 3x as many times as Green's does... and Green's been starting over him for some time now. Watching Patterson his freshman year and seeing how well he was doing, I told myself that he'd be an AA someday. Still waiting to see that. J-Rich got to vince quite a few times the other night! Excited to see how this year turns out for him. He'll be starting next year, and I can see him turning into Will Smith if he keeps progressing the way he is now. Haven't seen Gholston/Barrow/Cotton/Wilson/Worthington/Williams enough to comment, though I hear how beastly Wilson is all the time it seems.

I disagree with the majority here. I think this defense is as good as we have had. Its a different defense than 2002. We will get sacks from the secondary and LB'ers vs. in 2002 when it was mostly the DL. WE WILL HAVE MORE SACKS THAN LAST YEAR BY THE 5TH GAME.

We played the #2 team in the country who happens to have a Heisman trophy candidate QB, arguably the best OL in the country, and has as fast of skill players as we will see all year. The DL was as good as their OL. They got 2.9 yards a carry thanks to VY. Without VY they would barely have gotten a yard per carry with the best OL in the nation.

Give this defense a few games to get its rythm. We are going to destroy teams with pocket QB's. In my opinion when we play Michigan Henne is in big trouble. I think we match up great with Michigan this year.

I'm all for setting high goals, but I think expecting a Will Smith calibre player every year is unrealistic. He was a pretty rare talent, and I feel confident in saying that none of our upper classmen will be the kind of player that he was. The freshman? Maybe, but it's too soon to tell. The Bucks' D-line will be decent this year, but it won't be the '02 line, and they won't have a Will Smith replica. That's something you get every few years, if you're lucky.
