The Cavaliers began draft night with no picks in the second round, but ended up with two members of Kansas' national championship team.

They acquired Jayhawks forward Darnell Jackson from the Miami Heat for a future second-round pick, and purchased the rights to forward/center Sasha Kaun from Seattle.
Jackson, a 6-8, 250-pound power forward, averaged 11.2 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds as a starter for the Jayhawks. Kahn, 6-11, 250, averaged 7.1 points 3.9 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks in being named to the Big 12 All-Reserve Team as a senior.

Hickson may not have fan appeal, but Cavs' draft logic is sound, says Bill Livingston

Karl DeBlaker/Associated PressJ.J. Hickson shows the ability to finish around the basket, and provides the Cavaliers with much-needed youth in their front line.

Maybe J. J. Hickson will work out. The freshman power forward from North Carolina State is "an uncarved block," said Danny Ferry. He was making an analogy to sculpture. Michelangelo did not play basketball, since it had not been invented in Renaissance Italy. But he was a hard worker on the "block" with a chisel, and he once said: "Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it."

With the acquisition of Jackson and Kaun along with the drafting of Hickson, I have to believe that AV might be on the move.

Also, for those of you who do not like Hickson, he might not be able to contribute right away but he is a rebounding fool and goes after everything. He is also very good on the defensive end of the court.

Kaun got a pretty nice contract to play in Europe, he wont be playing with the cavs anytime soon

Cleveland Cavaliers Grade: A-
Round 1: J. J. Hickson (19)

Round 2: None

Analysis: Hickson has been one of my sleepers in the draft. He has an NBA body and great athleticism, and he can play inside and out. His game needs to develop, but the raw tools are impressive. He could be a nice long-term replacement for Joe Smith. At No. 19, he was one of the few players left on the board with a chance of being a great player.

He is going to play in Moscow next season but I still think it is a good get because Z is not getting any younger.

We have a ton of bigs through the 09-10 season. If Kaun develops in Europe for the next couple years he could be a big addition once Ben and Z are too old to play or gone.
Assuming Andy's gone before this season Hickson will need to be the 4th big. Next year Smith will be gone so Hickson will at least need to be the 3rd big, and hopefully a better offensive threat that Ben.

I love the pick of Hickson...

Some need to take a step back and realize that Ferry has a plan...

It seems like more than just the cavs weren't fans of CDR seeing how he feel...

As for Arthur I wanted him last night at the time of our pick until I found out about the kidney situation and when I heard that I had no problem with our pick...The scout and front offices know a lot more about these things than we do...

We are obviously going to get rid of Wild Thing in a trade and with Hickson we have four big guys without Andy, and we are obviously looking at getting a 2g or we would of looked to take one last night or tried to pick one up in the second round instead of picking up both Jackson and Kahn...

Hickson is a guy that has an NBA ready body, is athletic, can run the pick and roll with LBJ, can get to the front of the rim, much like Tyson chandler does with Chris Paul, he was basically a double double guy in the ACC as a freshmen...I really like the pick...

And if we don't get Michael Redd the world is not going to end...We will either find someone in free agency, or we will wait it out till the trade deadline and try to do something...Ferry knows something needs to be done and he will do something when the time is right, not just make a deal for the sake of making a deal...

I just dont get if they were drafting a project, why not take DeAndre Jordan, a guy with a much higher ceiling than Hickson imo. Some have compared him to a very raw and undeveloped Dwight Howard.

That is a good question, and I was really surprised to see Jordan fall so far...But scouts must of really saw some things they did like, because a guy with his athleticism should go first round for sure...

I rather love the J.J. Hickson pick the Cavs made. When one of the ESPN analysts were listing the Cavs' needs immediately before they were set to pick, and a scorer on the interior was mentioned, J.J. Hickson was conjured up in my mind. I actually had delusions that Hickson might still be available when the Bucks picked in the 2nd round because in some mocks he was projected relatively close to the area. Then again, I don't know if it was that delusional when CDR inexplicably fell to 40. I think he was a top 10 talent in this draft. He has a consistent motor offensively, deceptive quickness, stop-start ability, effortless ball-handling, cap leap quickly, and can score from all angles. And he's not bad defensively.

But I digress, back to Hickson. He has a Haslem/Brand type mid-range game, sets up his dribble drive, where he can snake through very small spaces, score from awkward positions, and can score from the post as well. He's quicker laterally than most 4's in the NBA, is very compact, and plays longer than his height because his wingspan. I think he'll be a solid defender. And he works the glass by using his body for position instead of jumping over guys. So he projects to be a pretty good rebounder as well.

I don't know why people are questioning his upside. He is only 19 years old and yet 15/9 in under 30 minutes in arguably the best conference in America. Not to mention the guy was double and triple teamed. He played very efficiently with an unreal 1.66 points per shot. How gaudy would his #'s have been had he received more touches and played along side a bonafide point guard too? There are a lot of areas where Hickson could still improve his production. You don't have to be 7 feet and athletic like DeAndre Jordan, but have virtually no skills whatsoever, and a poor work ethic, to have upside. If those are your traits you won't realize your "potential" anyways.

As far as Michael Redd goes, as a representative for the Milwaukee Bucks he isn't available to the Cavaliers until you get significant trade assets. I wouldn't call Varejao a significant trade asset. The Bucks might deal for Varejao, but it would be for Maurice Williams or Charlie Villanueva, not Michael Redd. The Bucks don't want the Cavaliers combo of crap, regardless if GM John Hammond's philosophy was to win-now (which it is obviously) or win later. Combining role players for impact players, which is what Hammond is doing currently, is just what I said Hammond should do about a month ago on this board. If the Bucks flounder this season in spite of their moves, the Bucks would either trade him for a high draft pick and prospects (which the Cavs don't really have), or hold onto him until we find a suitable trade partner. Expirings doesn't get it done with Milwaukee's unattractive market for free agency.

Joe Alexander is definitely not a 2-guard who makes Redd expendable. He doesn't have the lateral quickness to guard 2's. There is even some question whether he has the lateral quickness to guard 3's. But he probably doesn't have the strength or length to guard 4's, so that will be his projected position as a starter. A role he'll assume when Jefferson's contract lapses in 2-3 years. He's a semi developmental prospect because he just emerged collegiately this season and hasn't been playing basketball for long.

The Bucks aren't done dealing. Maurice Williams will definitely be wearing another uniform because he's not a table setter like his current complimentary personnel requires (Jefferson and Redd aren't individual playmakers) and he and Redd simply allow too much defensive penetration together. He'll probably be traded as part of a package for a 4. Then we'll deal Villanueva + Desmond Mason for a guy like Hinrich. Or solely Villanueva for Felton. Something like that. We'll be in the playoffs for sure. How far we'll go depends on how shrewd and aggressive Hammond is the remainder of this offseason. Stay tuned.

Kings Blog and Q&A: Artest gone? -- Sacramento Bee

In an e-mail to the Bee just minutes ago, Kings small forward Ron Artest indicated he may indeed opt out of his contract before the Monday deadline and become a free agent.

Asked about a NY Post column in which Peter Vecsey said Artest would be opting out, Artest had the following to say.

"I never knew so many teams would be coming after me," he wrote. "All I can say is I made a hundred degree turnaround."

I wonder if the Cavs will go after Artest

I don't know.

We'd still need one more piece, and I imagine Artest will charge 100x more than he should.

Artest plays SF though, and that presents a problem because he or LeBron aren't really able to move around anything but the 3. Plus LBJ plays all the minutes at 3, so yeah, not much room for him.

a few points:

1. on the hickson pick, it's not a "name" but it's effective. chalmers is delonte west redux. not a true pg. arthur is 6'8'' 220, and undersized for a PF, not to mention his kidney issue. koufos isn't the banger down low they need.

2. kahn's going to play in moscow. the cavs have his rights for a few years.

3. there are rumors of AV, wally, 2009 #1, and either DJ or Snow to Golden State for Baron Davis.
