CB E.J. Underwood (transfer to Pikeville)

I'm with cornerback6 on this one, about the corners going man-up and then just blitzkreig from there. However, if we can't find someone opposite Youboty then I think atleast in the OOC games we will sub like mad and find the combos that seem to mesh the best. I think Tressel will give EJ (or anyone else for that matter) every chance to prove they deserve that spot but if it doesn't happen then we will adjust accordingly. Even with a new DC or 2 we will be fine with the studs we have in the secondary. O'Neal has just as good a shot as the next guy, and if he beats them out then it has to be for a reason. Ginn would be ideal in my eyes but he is way too valuable to steal from WR. If he has the legs then I don't see why not, but that is why we have spring ball, and then the summer, and then fall practice. If there is not enough motivation out there for one of these studs to grab that spot, then just rotate and keep them fresh. My guess: FS Salley, SS Whitner, CB Youboty, CB Everett, Nickel Welch or O'Neal. Too much talent to go wrong here.

Well I dunno if Everett is better than EJ at corner.... You can make an arguement for the other young talent, but Everett is not a NATURAL at corner. There's a reason why he was a saftey. Anyhow I think Everett with a spring and fall at the position can end up playing very well. It doesn't matter who we play as long as they're the best 4....

I right now think its also going to be CB-Yobouty SS- Whitner FS-Salley CB-Everett....

One thing though is that if EJ can make the fall squad I can see him making some noise with having something to proove to the buckeye nation. So don't be surprised if he really makes a run for that corner spot IF HE COMES BACK.

The cornerback position at Ohio State, already thin to begin with, just got thinner as cornerback E.J. Underwood will be transferring out of OSU. Duane Long has the report.

OSU cornerback E.J. Underwood will transfer to Campbellsville University in Kentucky, an NAIA school, Bucknuts was informed this evening.

"We will be taking him down tomorrow to enroll," said E.J.'s father, Rev. Elmer Underwood. "He will start summer classes on Tuesday."

The parting with Ohio State was amicable.

"E.J. stood up and took resonsibility," Rev. Underwood said. "He did not do what he needed to do in the classroom. He did not do his part. He stood up and took responsibility for it. I am proud of him that."

The Underwoods have known Campbellsville assistant coach David Poole for many years. "E.J. is comfortable with the decision," Rev. Underwood said. "He is at peace for the first time in a long time. He wishes his teammates and Ohio State all the luck in the world. They will have no bigger fan than E.J. He is a Buckeye at heart." Underwood signed with Ohio State in 2002 out of Hamilton (Oh.) High School. He played in all 14 games as a true freshman, but missed much of 2003 due to injury. He played in eleven games and had 29 tackles in 2004.

I am sad to hear he will not be back.

Sad - though from all I've heard on these boards, not surprised.

Wish you well EJ. Wish you could have finished your college career as you started it, as a Buckeye

Wasn't he a starter for a few games in 2002? (after McNutt's Heisman season came to an end and before Gamblor took over full time)
He did make some starts in the NC year, I'm sure he started the Wisconsin game. He'll always have that ring. Best of luck to EJ.

Too bad. Not surprised, this has been talked about for a while. I don't know if he would have been eligable to play this year anyway (evidently his grades/credit progression weren't on track according to the NCAA). I wish him the best of luck at his new school. Hopefully this will be a lesson to all the Buckeye's that have boarderline grades... go to class and read your books!!

Best of luck EJ!!!
