Cbf40's look at '11 recruiting

How many in this class?

Written by Duane Long

How long ago were we all speculating just how big this class could be? It seems like just yesterday we were saying at least twenty-two, could see twenty-three or even twenty-four and there wass a possibility of a full boat.

We are now looking at seventeen. A month ago we had reason to discuss, how are we going to get all these players in here? Have times ever changed. For the class of 2011 I only count sixteen offers out there and only six recruits, Doran Grant, Andre Sturdivant, Aundray Walker, Shane Wynn, Ejuan Price, Conner Crowell, looking like they could land in Columbus. That sixteen number includes players like running back Demitrius Hart and super defenisve end prospect Ray Drew, who if they have ever mentioned the Buckeyes I have never seen it. It includes players like Wayne Lyons who has eliminated the Buckeyes and Dondi Kirby who came to an agreement with the staff that his timeline and our timeline did not jive. Bill Kurelic reported not too long ago that his sources tell him the Buckeyes are no longer recruiting Kevin McReynolds. So many players committed. Some to Ohio State and some to other schools. Some cut their lists like Wayne Lyons and the Buckeyes did not make the cut.

Finishing out the 2011 recruiting class

There is a good bit of chatter out there on the internet about who the Buckeyes finish up the class with. I see a top five class no matter what happens, and no matter where we are ranked I think it is a great one. It is a class that fills needs and the talent level is top drawer. I think the Buckeyes have put together a defensive line class for the ages. That is where it starts. Superior defensive line is where we got dominated by Florida and it is where we dominated Oregon.

Here is my take on where we stand.

I see nine viable players with offers out there for the Buckeyes. I don't know how many more offers we see. We have not seen but a handful of offers every year over the past few years once the season starts. We are out of the mix for some offered players. Kevin McReynolds is one. I don't know if we were ever in the mix for a player like Jeoffrey Pagan. We have not been eliminated publicly by Ishaq Williams but I would be surprised if we even got a visit.

Recruiting Update: 2011 Linebackers << The Buckeye Battle Cry

Written November 4th, 2010 by Jim

There really hasn't been much in the way of recruiting news since the commitments of 2012 prospects Brionte Dunn and Kyle Kalis at the end of September. However, the 2011 class will see some action tomorrow night.

Since Trey DePriest chose to head south, linebackers have been one of the most active and interesting areas for Ohio State recruiting. The coaching staff seems to want at least one linebacker in the 2011 class, but who that will be has been a question mark.

Ohio State could get an answer as early as tomorrow night when Maryland linebacker Conner Crowell announces his college destination. He has recently narrowed his choices to co-favorites Penn State and Ohio State and will decide between the two schools.

For a long time I have assumed that Crowell would be Penn State bound due to his east coast ties, but Penn State recruiting gurus appear to be as uncertain as anyone else about his destination. You would think if he was leaning one way or the other they would at least get a hint of it.

Given Penn State's struggles on the field and the rumored turmoil amongst the coaching staff off of it, I'd say Ohio State has at least a 50/50 shot. We won't have to wait long to find out.

In other recruiting news, Texas linebacker Anthony Wallace favors Oregon and enjoyed his official visit to Southern Cal (who played Oregon) over the weekend.

Questions in Columbus

How do the Buckeyes close out this class?

- Mark from Cincinnati

Let's look at the big names first. I think Ohio State lands Doran Grant and Aundrey Walker when it comes to four-stars and it has a good chance at pulling Jabari Gorman from Florida as well. The Buckeyes landed linebacker Conner Crowell on Friday, as he picked OSU over Penn State. After this it becomes confusing.

Obviously if a stud such as Curtis Grant wants to come (I think OSU is running No. 2 behind Florida for him right now), then the Buckeyes take him. Anthony Wallace would be another they would love to land, but Oklahoma appears to be tough to beat there with USC and others pushing hard as well. Ejuan Price is the third option at linebacker.

So what about Glenville standouts Shane Wynn or Cardale Jones? If there's room, Jones is more likely, as Wynn isn't feeling the love. But both Glenville kids could end up elsewhere and unless OSU whiffs on every linebacker, Andre Sturdivant is in the same boat.

Finishing out the Class of 2011 - pt.1

There is a good bit of interest out there on the internet about how the Buckeyes will finish up this recruiting class. I am going to take a stab at this. You may not like what I have to say about it.

Lets start with the Glenville foursome of Aundray Walker, Shane Wynn, Cardale Jones and Andre Sturdivant. The biggest speculation is about Walker and Jones. The reasons for all the buzz are completely different. Jones has had a really good year. It was key that he continue to get better. A player that is behind in his development needs to steadily get better. The consensus is Jones has done that. On the field anyway and there is the rub. Jones is going to have to come up with the kind of test score that is likely going to be red flagged based on what my sources are telling me. That means the kind of delay that could push him out of the class. If he somehow makes a qualifying score I think he gets in this class. Walker, on the other hand, has not had a good year. He continues to make mental mistakes that have hurt his stock. He has missed some time on the field. More than one source says he really does not have an Buckeye offer. The smart money says it is a conditional offer based on his grades. Walker has yet to satisfy that condition. I don't know how this one is going to play out and I doubt anyone outside of Ted Ginns office does.

There is much buzz that Shane Wynn does not have an offer. I believe that buzz. I don't know anyone in this business who believes he has an offer.

Finishing out the 2011 recruiting class - Pt. 2

Continuing the recruiting update, I look at the out of state players.

Outside of Doran Grant the really special players left on the Buckeyes want list are the out of state players. One stands out.

I bet you thought I was going to say Jadeveon Clowney. I am talking about Jabari Gorman. The need in the defensive backfield is so great that I don't know if you wait on the best defensive line prospect I have ever seen in Clowney if Gorman would lock up the final spot. He is that good and I think adding more defensive backs to this class is such that I would probably make that heart wrenching decision. We don't have anyone like Clowney. Then again nobody does. But we have special athletes coming in on the defensive line. We already have some here. I don't know who is going to play strong safety for us next year. The depth chart shows Zac Damicone and Chad Hagan. I have never believed in Damicone. I keep hearing that he is injured. Whatever the reason he is going into his fourth year and has made no impact. Hagan has been injured. I have heard that the heart condition he had is something that is career threatening. We will see how that plays out. Either way it leaves us with a huge question mark at strong safety. Maybe with a healthy Scott McVey we will have a two-deep at the Star which will allow for Christian Bryant to move back to strong safety. Landing Gorman would go a long way toward alleviating my concerns. He is bigtime and we have a real shot to get him here. His family is fighting hard to keep him close to home. If we can find a way to overcome that hurdle we could land a big time player who could come in and help immediately.

Teague was named Mr. Football the other day IIRC. Would love to see an offer go out to him.

Right with you on that one. Kid has been a stud!

Do you think Shaq Washington would reconsider if Ohio State offered? Or is he a strong commit to Cincy?

Who is Gibson they name on that list?

Thanks.

So wondering if anyone more enlighten than me could give me a perspective as to who we're still looking at and who is still considering us given all that has transpired at UF & Miami.... does this change anyone's opinion on who we close out the class with or are the people now mentioning us probably going to stay south of the mason-dixon?

If they can swing it (meaning my dream finish), I would love to see this class close with Shazier, Gorman, D. Grant, C. Grant and one of Haynes/Walker/Price/Pagan/Teague/Clowney/Moore.

Add that to this class and that is unreal:

QB: Braxton Miller
RB: None
WR: Evan Spencer
WR: Devin Smith
TE: Nick Vannett
TE: Jeff Heuerman
OL: Chris Carter
OL: Antonio Underwood
OL: Tommy Brown
OL: Brian Bobek
DL: Chase Farris
DL: Michael Bennett
DL: Joel Hale
DE: Kenny Hayes
DE: Steve Miller
DE: Ryan Shazier
LB: Connor Crowell
LB: Curtis Grant
DB: Ron Tanner
DB: DerJuan Gambrell
DB: Jeremy Cash
DB: Jabari Gorman
DB: Doran Grant
Wildcard: Teague? Walker? Haynes? Price?

I don't care what the ranking say and yes I know there are a lot of guys on the OL who project inside but I'd take that class over any in the nation...the Buckeyes would be able to boast one of the top QBs in the nation (Miller), one of the top centers (Bobek), one of the top DTs (Bennett), one of the top DEs (Shazier or Miller), one of the top LBs (Curtis Grant) and one of the top DBs (Doran Grant). Not to mention almost every other guy is highly rated at his position and even better I think every other guy has a very high ceiling (Crowell, Gambrell, Hayes, Gorman, Spencer and Smith especially).

A more realistic finish might be Walker, Price, Teague, Doran Grant and Haynes...which would still be great.
