Cbf40's look at '11 recruiting

Predicting the final members of OSU's 2011 recruiting class | Bucknuts.com

Ohio State currently has 17 verbal commitments in its 2011 recruiting class and is expected to add six or seven more to the group.

So, who will be the final additions to the class" It's difficult to say, but let's take a stab at it anyway.

And let's split it into two groups: "Confident" and "Shot in the dark."

CONFIDENT

In this category are cornerback Doran Grant from Akron St. Vincent/St. Mary, offensive lineman Aundrey Walker from Cleveland Glenville and WR Shane Wynn from Glenville. That would bring the class to 20.

As you can see, I am not buying that Walker and Wynn are a "package deal" along with quarterback Cardale Jones and linebacker Andre Sturdivant. I firmly believe the four young men want to play together in college and have discussed it. But when the chips are down, they will go where they want to go. Ohio State has landed every Glenville recruit that it has offered in the Jim Tressel era except Cordale Scott who signed with Illinois. Therefore, I don't see Walker and Wynn personally creating a leak in the Glenville-to-Columbus pipeline. No matter what they say now, they will be Buckeyes. They won't announce it until after their senior season - likely in January or even right up to signing day in February - but they'll be Buckeyes.

Ranking the Buckeye recruiting class pt.1

I am sure I will be doing this again once the class is full but right now I want to rank the players in the Buckeyes 2011 recruiting class as it stands right now.

First things first. This is the kind of class where being one of the last third of the rankings does not mean a player is a throwback. Most years there are players that might be reaches but this year I can only think of one player that falls into the potential reach zone. That is prett remarkable. That when I go down this class of 17 as it currently stands that I only see one player that I want to say that I would like to have that scholarship still in the bank or that I wonder why another player was not offered instead. I don't care where this class is rated. This is the kind of recruiting class that you build championships with. It is so strong up front. If we all are here 100 years from now that is one thing that will never change about football. You win championships in the trenches. Ask Jeremiah Masoli. You can find him in between jail stints if you really want to.

1 - Braxton Miller, QB, Huber Hts. Wayne - After the season I had just watched Cardale Jones grow up on the football field. He was my #1 player in the class at the time. A couple of months later I saw Millers junior film that Mark Porter put together. I had not seen anything from him all year while I watched four Glenville games. I was dazzled by what I saw from Miller. I think he is the best quarterback in the country and so much better than Terrelle Pryor as a passer at the same time in their development that it is not even close. Miller may be a better pure passer right now heading into his senior year of high school than Pryor is heading into his junior year of college. Yes, I said that.

2 - Kenny Hayes - DE, Toledo Whitmer - There is not alot to not like about Hayes. He has all the tools you are looking for in a defensive end. He has the great body, length and the reach that is so important to edge players. He has the get off and the motor. He plays with a serious does of nasty. Watch how this kid fills out. That will tell the tale on him as far as wether he is a weak side player or a strong side player. That is why he is ranked higher than Miller. He could play either end, or could grow into a three-technique.

2011 recruiting class pt.2

Looking at the second half of the recruiting class now.

9 - Devin Smith, WR, Massillon. I was one of those surprised by the fact that it took Smith so long to get an offer. I see a kid with so much upside. His athlete season was spectacular. He lit it up on the track and came to camp and lit it up. I see a player who is going to be so much more than he is right now physically. He is going to get bigger and stronger and I think he is one of those players who is going to get a good deal faster. He is already one of those players who runs by people. If he is even, he is leavin'. I could not be happier that he waited around on an offer. He had the kind of list that many players would just say forget Ohio State and take one of them.

10 - Nick Vannett, TE, Westerville Central. I think Vannett is underrated in general but fans don't get how important his verbal is. I think the tease of a verbal for so long put some fans off but make no mistake of the importance of landing a player of this calber. Ohio State is never going to be a tight end featured offense under Jim Tressel. Some of you want to see a tight end involved in the offense like we see with other porgrams. The tight ends are such a weapon because that is what they are supposed to be in those offenses. In our offense the tight end needs to be a great blocker first. If he is a good receiver that is just icing on the cake. Most kids as talented as Vannett want to be in tight end featured offenses. That we got a player who is the great blocker we need but can be a weapon as a receiver is a real coup. We are starting to drop off in the overall talent level of tight end. Vannett goes a long way in restoring it.

11 - Ron Tanner, FS, Eastmoor Academy. I look at where this talented kid is on this list and that is what defines how good this class is. Tanner is the kind of safety I would target every year. A player like Tanner at free safety allows Jim Heacock the flexibility of playing cover 2 or 8 in the box because he is a good tackler but he is so good on the ball that Heacock can put 8 in the box and know Tanner is going to sit back there and make plays on the ball. That is what I love the most about his game.He reads the game very well, breaks on the ball and has the size and athleticism to go up and battle big receivers for the ball. Watch on this video from ScoutingOhio.com how many times he gets his hands on the football.

2011 Ronald Tanner - Eastmoor Academy - ATH1

The article is more about what if you had the top DL from Ohio going up against the top OL from Michigan...or the Michigan WRs going up against the best Ohio DBs...so on and so forth...

Saw over on MGoBlog last night that Micheal Caputo is reportedly going to announce sometime over the next few weeks. As tight to the vest as MC keeps his intentions, I guess we may have to wait for the announcement to get a feel for his intentions.

I may be mistaken but I think we have a very limited number of scholarships (14?) for the 2012 class. We also have a loaded instate class next year. Any chance we bank a ship or two this year?

I'm counting seventeen seniors graduating next year (not including Barclay, Boren or Moeller). If Posey has a good year he's probably ready to come out. Add on another couple of transfers or academic casualties you might have 20+. With the roster so loaded, we can afford to be generous with the lineman offers and still be selective with other positions. Keep in mind Duron Carter is just sitting there as well.

http://http://www.buckeyeplanet.com...-cbf40s-look-2012-recruiting-2.html#post17250 CBF40 did a good job of summarizing where things stand at this early point. DL is a bounty of riches in Ohio next year, with 4 verbal offers out already. No shortage of RB candidates. Next year we will definately need to find room for LB's and a few tackle candidates.
