Chris Ash (Secondary Coach Jacksonville Jaguars)

I wonder when we'll find out whether or not he's calling the defensive plays.

Honestly, I think this designation will be an in-house deal. I think they might be trying to save some face for Luke and let him keep the "Co" designation, all the while letting Ash ostensibly take the reigns behind the scenes.

I am really interested to see how Ash takes this opportunity. I loved the results he got from his defensive backs at Wisconsin and he routinely turned perceived low-level recruits into great players. While he may not be the "home-run" hire we were looking for from a name perspective, he may be exactly what we need considering the talent already on the roster. Imo there is almost no way to mess up with Burrows, Bell, Apple, Conley, Worley, Webb, Smith, and Lattimore. However, if he really helps them reach their potential, then this secondary should be top 5 in the country and no questions asked (at least in a year or two). In the mean time, the unit really only needs to be above average with our front four imo, but of course that means improving leaps and bounds from this year.

UFM did not turn the offense around in one year. I don't think the secondary will turn around in one year. My expectation is to go from 120th to 60th. I believe their best strategy will be to play press and let the defensive line get to the QB. Larry Johnston has work to do.

Sure he did. Scoring offense improved by nearly 13 points per game from 2011 to 2012. Went from being ranked 81st to being ranked 21st. Total offense increased by about 105 yards per game. It may not have been a finished product by his standards but there was a demonstrable instant impact.

In my book going from 120th to 60th would be a significant turnaround. If last season's secondary had been able to produce like the 60th best in the country the team would have played for a crystal football.

And we would've lost that crystal ball. 120 to 60th and were beating Clemson in the Orange bowl though.

Don't be so sure. Auburn's pass efficiency defense was ranked 99th and they damn near won the thing. The fact remains that if Ohio State's pass defense were even marginally better they never would have been in the Orange Bowl and never would have been playing Clemson.

Ohio State football: Chris Ash arrives intent on repairing defense

Wisconsin was 15th nationally in total defense when Chris Ash was coordinator in 2011 and ’12.

Chris Ash wasn’t looking for a new job.

He was happy as the defensive coordinator at Arkansas, eager to help coach Bret Bielema rebuild a Razorbacks program that went winless in Southeastern Conference play in 2013.

So when Urban Meyer called Ash a few weeks ago to ask about his interest in Ohio State’s vacant co-defensive coordinator/safeties job, Ash was surprised and flattered.

“It’s one of the top-five football jobs in the country, in my opinion,” said Ash, whose hiring was officially announced on Thursday....
