Chris Paul, NBA Rookie of the Year

Somewhat obscured by complaints about Steve Nash's MVP award, Chris Paul of the Hornets won Rookie of the Year by a nearly unanimous vote, garnering 125 of 126 first-place votes. In my opinion, even the loudest outcry against Steve Nash's award (which I do not necessarily agree with, but that's beside the point) should be drowned out by the outrage over the fact that anybody saw fit to vote for somebody else as Rookie of the Year. Here's Chris Paul's resume:

Led all rookies in:
  • Points (16.1 ppg)
  • Assists (7.8 apg)
  • Steals (2.2 spg)
  • Double-doubles (21)
  • Minutes (36.4/game)
Paul also led the entire league in steals.

The lone dissenting vote went to Utah's Deron Williams, who averaged 10.8 ppg, 4.5 apg, and 0.8 steals/game.

For as much of a problem as people have with Nash being MVP, at least there's a valid argument to be made for him. I cannot think of a single defendable argument for voting for anyone but Chris Paul for ROY. Whoever voted for him should explain himself.

stern said he wasnt going to let paul dictate where he wanted to go

so when he walks at the end of the year the barely scraping by Hornets get nothing instead of what they could have gotten in a trade for him.

Brilliant way to help the small market teams Dave.

As much as I don't like players running the NBA, this is a terrible move by David Stern. The Hornets accepted the deal. As far as I'm concerned, if the team that's getting "shafted" in the deal accepts it, it should go down.

That being said, this was a good return for Chris Paul. Kevin Martin, Odom, Dragic and a first? Fuck, the Hornets might be better.

Just another reason to hate the NBA. There is no rhyme or reason to what Stern did. This could cause lots of problems in the future if they end up blocking this for good.

Terrible move by the NBA. It makes no sense. They can't stop Paul from choosing where he wants to go. I understand the frustration shown by Gilbert, but the reality is that blocking the trade only delays the inevitable.

Also, not sure this trade helped the Hornets. If you look at Martin and Scola's contracts, New Orleans would have been on the hook for a while for a couple of talented players that would have them just missing the playoffs every year. That is the worst position to be in the NBA.

Wtf is Stern thinking? If Paul is going to walk at the end of the deal anyway, what's wrong with the Hornets getting some pieces while they can?

This is different from the Lebron situation. Lebron wouldnt ok a sign and trade, nor would he tell the Cavaliers his plans so that they could plan differently. At least Paul has been upfront with his desires.

The problem here is that the NBA needs to sell the Hornets to a real owner. As long as they are owned by the NBA they aren't going to be able to buy or sell a big name player because the rest of the owners don't want to deal with a team like the Lakers with Paul. I'm guessing that the only reason this trade got blocked is because the Hornets are owned by the NBA.
