Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

This is where they may have screwed themselves.

I don't see this team winning more than 2 games this season. If they have the top pick would they spend it on Barkley after drafting Weeden?

Ugh. It's tough rooting for this team.

I agree with the above poster, it's almost like Holmgren and Heckert are giving a big middle finger to the fans with a draft like this and the total lack of activity in free agency.

Weeden has one season to prove himself. If they are bad enough this season to draft the top QB next year they will do it. The only good thing about Weeden being 28-29 is that he is as good physically as he will ever be. Sure he should improve with more experience, but the difference from year 1 to year 2 won't be the same as if he were 22-23. If he doesn't get it done the first year he is too old to wait on. I just hope H&H are better football minds than me and see something in some of these players that I don't.
IMO today was the best day of the draft for the Browns. If you randomly put all the players they drafted on a list without knowing which pick they were I don't think the draft would be looked at as bad other than the Weeden pick. For better or worse H&H have tied themselves to Weeden. If he fails they will be gone.

Adding Shugarts as a UFA as well. He would be a practice squad project if he can stick I'd imagine, but I'd love to see them undo some of Bollman's handiwork and turn him into a decent pro. Shane Olivea comes to mind here.

No one, (NF included) is a more savage critic of Heckert than myself. With that being said, this is the finest Browns draft since 1999. The only picks that give me gas pains are the third round pick and the last pick in the seventh round.

Normally, I'm constipated (couldn't give a shit) when it comes to the Browns later round picks I still can't believe what fell in their laps today. I worried, I could be dreaming. Here's the list:

Probably not going to happen. You also don't win with 7th round compensatory picks, so it doesn't really matter. These guys will have a hard time making the team, let alone making any sort of impact.

It seems to me that the best teams in the league always have solid impact players who were 5-7 round picks. Obviously you cant draft with that expectation, but the best seem to find the hidden gems...

The following is taken from this website. It's proof that, every so often God will bless an idiot. On the left is the players overall ranking, then their position ranking, and on the far right is the round they were projected to be drafted.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2012/all

78 Billy Winn DE 10 Boise State Sr 6-4 294 2-3

87 Trevin Wade CB12 Arizonar Sr 5-10 192 3

146 Emmanuel Acho OLB 15 Texas Sr 6-2 238 4-5

Very, very uncommon for a 7th round pick to make any sort of impact. Fifth and sixth rounders I agree. They say 4-6 is what separates the great teams from the good ones. The teams that can find starters and key reserves that late are the great ones. 7th round is still a different breed with the overall likelihood of those guys making impacts being slim. That's all that I was talking about.

getting starters from round 4 on is a long shot at best. getting 2 deep contributors is also a struggle. i think people see player x drafted in round 5 and assume it's like that league wide. it's really not.

the only real pick that was a head scratcher was hughes in the 3rd. all the others made sense. they will have to try and pluck a wr from the vet cuts that are forthcoming this summer, but really, after a few guys, this wr class was underwhelming. they did already sign josh coope and bert reed, both of which could probably make the team.

the reason the browns have never gained ground on anyone in the league is that they've continually trotted out shit at the qb position. since 2005 it's been a series of little engine that could, low ceiling guys that couldn't play, surrounded by one year of some rocket armed dullard spraying balls all over the place. for better or worse cleveland finally tried taking a step towards fixing the most glaring problem for this team over the last 12 years.

Maybe this has been shared before, but here is a great resource for past drafts. I believe the link will take you to the Steelers, but you can switch to any team.

*Nice thing is you can click on any player and see there Pro and College stats.

This is how the browns draft room works, apparently. Holmgren makes it sound like he has final say and that Heckert lacks confidence. It really seems dysfunctional.

"I won?t tell you exactly what it?s about, but this is typical of what might happen,'' he said. "I said, ?Tom, do you want to do this?? He said, ?I don?t think I do. I think it?s too much or too strong or whatever.? I said, ?well, we might have to.? And he goes, ?well, if we have to, then you?ve got to tell me, because I won?t do it.? And I said, ?OK, then I might have to tell you. Fine.'''

Are you fucking kidding me? We fans can joke about this all we want, but if this is anything close to an accurate exchange between these two then this team will never sniff .500 let alone the playoffs.

I find this concerning to say the least. When Heckert was hired all I heard was this guy built the Eagles into a very good team. Great talent evaluator...blah blah blah. What the fuck does this team have to do to get someone with a basic knowledge of football evaluation.
