Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

actually, weeden's a fairly decent athlete. he ran a 4.9 40 and had a cone time in the area of justin blackmon's. cleveland didn't give up a 2nd and future 1st to acquire this qb either. the only reason weeden fell was his age, unlike quinn who fell due to a lack oftalent. if you're going to melt, at least be factually accurate.

I laugh at combine numbers. They got Dontari Poe drafted in the first round. Weeden moves slowly under pressure and he gets clumsy - watch the tape. I'm sure he'll get over that once he's being chased by James Harrison and Ray Lewis.

We'll see how many of you are defending this pick in 2 years when we have a new coaching staff, front office, and quarterback. I know if my career and reputation depended on Brandon Weeden leading this inept franchise bcak into relevance, I'd be working on my resume.

Why should it be concerning? Holmgren is the big cheese and it's not like he just walked off the farm. He has experience in evaluating talent and was the GM with the Seahawks so he understands the process. To think he just showed up on draft day to enjoy the festivities is ridiculous. Like any other organization, the main guy is going to listen to his people but ultimately he has the final say.

I am not sure how this draft will play out, but I do think this management team has a plan. Whether the plan works out or not we will know in the next year or two but I for one think that had the previous regimes built the team through this process we wouldn't be where we are now. I give these guys credit for sticking to their guns and not caving to the fanbase.

Yeah, they have a plan. They're building through the draft. About 95% of the front offices in any sports leagues say the same thing. Whether it materializes that way is another story.

you laugh at combine numbers but wanted cleveland to draft someone like stephen hill who was all combine and no substance?

and, it's ok to admit that you make a blanket statement on weeden that was totally off. the tape shows me someone with a quick release that is hardly a statue in the pocket or "cement feet." but, i'm not in the middle of a melting rant.

ya i would be proud too...way to let them take the easy route in life

The problem I have with that logic, is that you are implying that the Browns are actually going somewhere. What's the point in supporting them, suffering through years of misery, losing and taking the non "easy route" only for there to be NO reward at the end - no Super Bowl - no winning seasons? If the Browns were actually going to be winning something in the long run (which I hope they do, but historically does not seem to be the case) then there's no point in putting yourselves through that agony if you're not from/living in Cleveland (like his kids).

im not implying anything...he said he was proud that his kids were steelers fans...to me thats like saying your proud your kids are scUM fans...im proud to be a browns fan as sad as that is...ive rooted for them my whole life and thats all i know...i couldnt even fathoom rooting for another team...so if you dont like watching the browns lose, fine...stop rooting for them and jump on a bandwagon for another team...go play in traffic and please stay out of this thread

Where in this entire thread did I want a combine guy like Stephen Hill?

His quick release is based on a passing spread with quick reads. Fortunately for him, in college, he didn't face much pressure. But when he did, he got scared. Watch the Iowa State game or the Texas game (where he had a horrible pick 6 overturned b/c he accidentally stepped out of the back of the endzone before throwing it straight to the defender)

Not worth arguing much more about it. We'll see in next 8 months what we just wasted a pick on. I'm hoping to eat some tasty crow, but unfortunately I think you got dibs.

EDIT: And before I read another Kool-Aid drinker espousing the virtuous scouting ability of Heckert and Holmgren, these are the quarterbacks those two genuises have drafted in their careers: Seneca Wallace, David Greene, Kevin Kolb, Colt McCoy. But I'm sure they got it right this time.

You were saying, when having a choice between rooting for the Steelers or rooting for the Browns, that rooting for the Steelers is the "easy route." That phrase is used when one is presented with several possible routes to identical outcomes - ie, I could get into Harvard by working hard for it or by having a rich father who donates a ton of $ to the school. This is not accurate for the situation you were saying because rooting for the Browns and rooting for the Steelers lead to two entirely different outcomes - rooting for the Browns is not currently a "route" because it does not "lead" or "terminate" in anything (currently).

I can understand and I definitely respect people who are life-long Browns fans and I am myself to a slight degree, but if his kids have the choice and they make it for the Steelers, that is definitely not taking the "easy route."

Also, I was kind of kidding with the previous reply, please don't take it too seriously

The biggest issue I see with Weeden is he was almost exclusively in the shotgun and making simple reads. They obviously think he will be able to grasp being under center more and making reads in his dropback from center versus his drop from the shotgun.

To be honest I'm ambiguous. The pieces for this team to seriously improve this year just aren't there and the schedule works against it as well. I just won't be surprised to see Matt Barkley being called up as the Browns first pick next year at this point.

Taking the "easy route" would be cheering for Shitzburgh one year, then the Pats, then the Colts and then rounding it out by then cheering for the Giants.

Picking a team and actually sticking with it ISN'T the easy route, even if that team has been good through the past 20 years or so. I don't know how old his kids are, but MAYBE he's proud that they stuck with the Squeelers through Bubby Brister or something. How are we to know?

we can't draft barkley because we dont have enough peices for him yet...we need to draft at least 2 more OL in the first 2 rounds and we have to get him weapons to throw for him...you build the team first, then add the franchise QB...thats how all good teams do it...so were talking 3 more years at least until we can draft a franchise QB

Holmgren, as evidenced by his Super Bowl win, is arguably one of the better coaches in NFL history. His abilities as a GM though, based on what we saw in Seattle and now in Cleveland, are questionable. I think there is something to the fact that the Packers didn't hand him the GM role.

Did we forget the sarcasm font?

Put down the bong and read what you just said. I really really really hope that was sarcasm, especially since they literally just PASSED on two good to potentially great OL for Weeden....
