Cleveland Indians (2013 Season)

I’m guessing you wouldn’t wear a “New York Jews” or “San Francisco Chinamen” cap

While most commenters on my anti-Chief Wahoo posts forcefully assert that “no one cares” about racially offensive logos like the one used by the Indians, The National Congress of American Indians (and many other Native American individuals and groups) does. To help raise awareness of how offensive Chief Wahoo is, the NCAI has created a poster to put the matter into pretty sharp relief:

I have seen rumblings about getting rid of Chief Wahoo… WTF

Indians have been quietly moving toward this since they moved from old Municipal Stadium. Ever notice when you walk around Progressive Field that the Chief is almost nowhere to be found? He's not on any of the banners or signage around the park. He's only on a couple of the caps the team used last season...and none of the "special occasion" caps, like for 4th of July.

For awhile they tried to shift to the stylized "I" on caps and uniforms. It still appeared last year on 2 of their uniforms. More recently they've added the block looking "C" that, to me, is too close to the Cub's "C" logo. But, for 2013 the Chief did appear on the sleeve of every uniform. My bet is that's going to be the next area where his use will be reduced.

Chief Wahoo rarely appears at Indians.com and I don't believe that MLB has used him for anything for the past few years. Like it or not, the Chief is going to be retired.

They might retire him but he will not be dead. People still have those old signs with his picture. Long live Chief Wahoo!

I'm a big fan of the away uniform. I like simplistic designs, and that's the best of them, IMO. I like the plain block "C" on the cap. I'd like to see the red cap with the white home unis. That's what I remember from when I first started really caring about the Tribe in the mid-80's...long live Joe Carter, Chris Bando, Pat Tabler, and Andre Thornton!

Agreed regarding the simplest thing design of the uniform but long live Larry Doby, Al Rosen, Jim Hegan, George Strickland and Bobby Avila.

Little before my time, BUT, I have an enormous collection of 1940's-50's graded/encased Tribe Bowman/Topps cards. I've spent years accumulating them from ebay and have the entire Indians teams from, basically, 1945-60...most in excellent condition. Doby, Feller, Avila, Rosen, Easter, Mitchell, Lemon, Wynn, Garcia...all of 'em. I also have every Colavito ever produced. I've read just about any book on Tribe history (Terry Pluto has some excellent ones). I know more about Tribe history than any other sports franchise. They are the franchise I love the most in pro sports.

That is quite a collection to say the least. Most people from that era such as myself either lost their cards or lost interest in maintaining their collection. At least, I saw many of those guys in person so I have those memories. Went to a 1954 double-header against the Yankees. Will never forget it. Standing room only and we stood behind the fence that surrounded the outfield. I can remember my uncle asking my brother and I when they announced Standing Room Only if we still wanted to go… Hell yes..

It's cool that you got to witness a lot of their "golden era." They had some teams back then. The 90's were a ton of fun, but don't quite measure up.
