Dolan doesn't seem to want to pay Bauer what his future salary might cost, of course Bauer is going to arbitration again in the offseason, so potentially around $17 or $18 million next year. So they are very motivated to trade him. Problem is it seems they are under the illusion that they need to get MLB-ready talent in return to try and make a run this year, and very few teams who are gunning for the playoffs will trade away a productive major league player. I'm not sure they are going to deal him in spite of the motivation. To make the trade happen, the Tribe FO will have to admit the reality that in spite of being able to dominate crap teams like the Tigers, Royals and White Sox, they are still well off from having a true World Series championship-caliber roster, and will need to settle for trading him for a Mercado-type prospect who can help them next year.

Brad Hand makes less sense to trade as he is not going to be nearly as expensive and is under contract 2 more years, and they aren't exactly deep at the back of the bullpen.

I feel they could easily afford to keep Bauer, except the ownership insists on pinching pennies on player salary costs. Just tell Kipnis to not let the door hit him on the way out, and replace him with a smaller contract, and there you have solved the salary "problem" of Bauer costing more. But Dolan seems hellbent on cutting payroll and Bauer is like the fatted calf before the feast.

Totally agree. Kipnis is making $14 mil this season and is batting in the mid-240s with a lifetime average of a little over .260. If Kipnis does not want to give the Indians a big hometown discount and take around $10 mil for next season so the Indians can keep Bauer. Give the second base job to Freeman but since Kipnis is Francona's boy this will never happen. I forgot to mention that Kipnis has outstanding range in the field.

I think the Tribe FO is shrewd enough to find an improvement on Kip at maybe $10M or lower, so I do not believe there is a real chance of him being back. Kip is now a mediocre hitter and fielder, no real reason to keep him at any substantial cost. I am sure some other club will be willing to part with more cash next year for Kip than Cleveland. Also, Nolan Jones could be in the big leagues playing 3rd at some point next season. Thanks to Jose's defensive versatility, the Tribe has the flexibility to effectively be able to replace Kip by adding someone at 2nd or 3rd.

I totally agree with your thought that the Tribe will try to find an improvement at 2B next year. But your decimal place is off. No way they’ll pay anything near $10M for Kip or any other 2B in 2020. Will be under $1.0M.

And after what they’ve just gone through with Jose the past 11 months I don’t see them messing around with a position change for Jose. In the unlikely event that Jones is ML ready in 2020 (remember he’s only played about 16 games at AA so far), he’ll be somewhere other than 3B.
