Coach Bill Conley (official thread)

I sense a little hostility towards Bucknuts judging by the tones of some of these posts
Personally, Kyle, I still have my BN subscriptions and I do it because of the writers. I'd love to sit down and talk basketball with you over a beer sometime this season (I think you should have a get together for some road game at a bar, I'd go), and I have nothing ill to say about Duane, Bill, Gary, Steve or you. Of course, I trust the VG over anyone on football analysis, but that doesn't mean I don't like hearing what they have to say. My only problem with the site is the posters, they kill me.

Some are truly great that post only over there (BuckeyeBeliever and Kern come to mind), but man, even the Insiders football board is terrible. The subscribers BBall one is nice because of the info, but christ, you know that 99% of the people on the board are obnoxious. They all want Tressel fired, they all want the backups in, they want everything changed. Yeah, it hurts when we lose 3 straight games, but we're still OSU. If it keeps happening? Then we make a change. But you don't fire a coach who just won you a fucking title, you know? 2 BCS bowls in 2 years! Rock on.

It's those posters that keep me from being anything but a casual poster and a reader. I read the front page, I read your takes and I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with people trolling, complaining and flipping out. It's like the Browns insiders board.. after the game on Sunday there were EIGHT threads on the front page blaming Butch for the loss! Eight! And it's clear that punting on fourth and one on midfield in OT is the right decision. Butch made it, the announcers agreed with it, so why are you right about it? It's the same thing on Bucknuts. You are not a coach. You can second guess a coach all you want, but everyone on there is a coach. Over here, we're fans, we're educated and we make observations and suggestions instead of sweeping comments about a group of kids (keyword: kids, so give them a break every once in a while). A guy on there suggested that because he plays a lot of NCAA 2005, he should be the Offensive Coordinator? WHAT?

Bucknuts I read for info and laugh at, here I read to discuss opinions and laugh with.

Basically, I like the writers but to the readers, I'd have to say: You are not right. You are not a better coach than people who get paid for it. And if we challenge your takes and opinions, deal with it. You aren't special.

I think, unfortunately, that because Bucknuts has grown so much, there's not necessarily any worse a ratio of irrational posters, but there's just a lot more of them.

I don't disagree with you about some of the attitudes on the forums, sometimes it's just really depressing and hard to put up with. But the way I look at it, for those who subscribe to Bucknuts, they are doing so because (presumably) they love the content, the writers, the information, and the chance to get daily information in being part of a community.

I think i'd compare the forums right now to Ohio State and what recruits think of it. With more size than most schools, there will be a wider culture, a lot more people, different size, and a different atmosphere. Some people like it, some don't.

It used to bother me, but now I embrace it. Everyone here knows i'm an optimistic person by nature, and because of that, the radical view point of things, the dissenting opinion to mine, got on my nerves if it was overwhelming.

I definitely understand why there's a certain contempt in some cases, but i'm just surprised so many haven't let it go more than they have.

some revisionist history with duane and his predictions i am affraid. he was all about donte being a true corner, back before i was banned i asked him how he could tell since he only is playing safety and it was like fucking news to him at the time. it kind of blew me away that he didn't even know where his top player in the state was playing. hiley was a true corner too yet he wasn't good enough to start at glenville at corner as a senior.

he also was listing marcus freeman as being like 6'4" and 250. that is my size. i went to a wayne game like any other dude out there and got to stand within a few feet of freeman, i dwarfed him. marcus is solid but he is like 6'2" max and was probably 220 at the time.

calling ginn to receiver this year was a no brainer with our depth chart. hardly any credit deserved there.

what burned me most about duane though was how he would rag on my boy tyler everett. ty played his senior year hurt and duane called him a reach for the kindest words he could muster. perhaps if jabba the expert had been up 77N and seen ty play instead of relying on the people at jj huddle as his 'sources' he would have known that he was gutting it out for his team and playing through the pain.

duane was basically the consensus of jj huddle in the beginning. now that he is all guru'ed up he does use his dialing wand (which he obtained by mashing the keypad) to call up guys and he does get good info. when he has something to say about where a recruit is leaning or whatever i tend to believe that he is reporting what he heard. when he talks about so and so's skills or whatever though i just have to laugh. the guy has seen prepackaged highlights and maybe a game or two on tape. there is no substitute for actually seeing the guy in person. i just don't think harassing teen age boys via the phone really qualifies you as an expert, but then again i never took my certified recruiting expert exam either, and then yet again i never claim to be any sort of expert at all. i am a recruiting fan and i go see some games. nothing more.

if you think i have a bad opinion of duane, you should hear what john mcallister thinks of him. he is much more brutal than me and probably completely correct.

on a serious note, you premium guys really need to peer pressure duane into dropping some lbs. i may not respect his opinion on talent but he is still a buckeye fan and no buckeye fan should die as young as he is going to. seriously that is some dangerous shit he is doing to himself.

edit: mccallister thinks i am a jackass as well.

I don't understand why people are bashing Conley.
I realize he is being somewhat unprofessional, but did anyone ever think that maybe he is right? So many people are so quick to defend JT. Maybe Conley sees the problems, and being an OSU fan himself is very frustrated by it.
He was an asst coach for a long time. Maybe he knows a thing, or two about the game.

When he was on the staff, I always read threads saying how great he is, and how respected he is. What happened to that?

VG : WAS mccallister the guy who puts a pretty complete talent evaluation and sells them to coaches? If I remember correctly the O-Zone had a sample of what he does and was pretty interseting. I wish I could find what he wrote. I remember him saying Brandon Maupin would be a tremendous OL if he decides to go that route....

buckzip,
Conley, as respected throughout the country, was never given the respect he felt he deserved from tOSU fans. Especially the ones that believe the school recruits itself. That's where I think a lot of this comes from.

I gotta defend Duane on this one. I have been getting OFS since it was published out of Middletown, and Kelton Lindsay was a hot junior. Duane never ever listed Freeman at 6'4 250, and he certainly never claimed Hiley was a pure corner. I don't know about any of the other stuff, so I am not going to comment. All I can say is that Duane is the sole reason I keep my subscription to Bucknuts.
All I can say about the rest of the board is that it is sad that the Bucknuts staff sold their souls to TheInsiders, and are forced to tolerate the insanity that the board has become. I haven't read the hoops board there lately, it used to be the only sane place on the board, mainly because the bandwagoning newbies don't give a darn about the hoops team, and only the real hoops junkies-in general-not just OSU-posted there.

yea that is the mccallister i am talking about. everyyear i hate how we pick the big 33 team by representing all the regions of ohio and every year he calls me a jackass or dumbass or whatever for thinking certain guys don't belong on the team. i believe we should field the best team and if that team doesn't include a guy from SE ohio or whatever region fuck it, the best team is what we should be sending not some PC bullshit team that keeps all the regions of the state happy. he is probably right in all honesty. i really can't argue with this guy and have any shred of credibility. his client list speaks for itself.

man though does he get worked up easily over internet recruiting experts. he has no respect for any of them at all, not even kurelic back when he had the conley relationship feeding him. it is pretty funny though if you don't mind hearing your head is up your ass about a half a dozen times.

edit: freeman was listed as 6'4" no doubt, maybe it was 240 and not 250 though. i remember correcting him and having him correct it though.

I am a JT believer (except for the stance he takes on the offense side of the ball), but you have to believe there is something wrong when you have as many people leave the football program as we have the last year or so (including Archie). I do not want to see it happen but if JT isn't careful his hard head could cost him his job sooner or later.
