Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

the new realignment does columbus no favors at all outside of travel.

The new format also creates changes in determining the 16-team playoff field. The top three teams in each division will qualify for the postseason. The next two teams with the best records in each conference will then earn wild-card berths.
That will make it more difficult for teams to qualify in the East, because it will have two more clubs than the West competing for eight berths.

I'm sure the CBJ could care less about division competition, knowing the furthest they travel to play a division opponent is less than 600 miles.

Plus, with three first round picks in the strongest draft in recent memory, they can set the team up to be competitive, regardless of which division they
play.

Aside from playing every team in the other conference home and away, what's the schedule against division opponents?

I'm sure Bettman will get stupid and add two more expansion teams to even it out. Then, we'll be looking at additional realignment.

They aren't going to be putting another team in Quebec City, so expansion in the east is unlikely since Atlanta failed again.

The two candidates I keep hearing are KC and Seattle. Seattle makes a ton of sense, I'm not so sure about KC.

Within Conference (Division): 29 games
? 5 games vs. five teams (3 Home/2 Away vs. two teams, 2 Home/3 Away vs. three teams) AND 4 games vs. one team (2 Home/2 Away). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.

? 5 X 5 =25 games

? 1 X 4 = 4 games

Within Conference (Non-Division): 21 games

? 3 games vs. each team (2 Home/1 Away vs. four teams, 1 Home/2 Away vs.three teams). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.

? 3 X 7 = 21 games

Non-Conference: 32 games

? 2 games vs. each team (1 Home/1 Away)

? 2 X 16 = 32 games

(Exception: one team from each division plays one less game inside Division and one more game inside Conference outside Division)

Eastern Conference (8-Team Divisions)

? 5 games vs. two teams (3 Home/2 Away vs. one team, 2 Home/3 Away vs. one team) AND 4 games vs. five teams (2 Home/2 Away). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.

? 5 X 2 =10 games

? 4 X 5 = 20 games

Within Conference (Non-Division): 24 games

? 3 games vs. each team (2 Home/1 Away vs. four teams, 1 Home/2 Away vs.four teams). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.

? 3 X 8 = 24 games

Non-Conference: 28 games? 2 games vs. each team (1 Home/1 Away)? 2 X 14 = 28 games

NEW STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF FORMAT

Playoff qualification will be primarily Division-based, with the top three finishers in each Division qualifying for the first 12 spots in the Stanley Cup Playoffs (and the first three "seeds" in each Division).

The two additional playoff spots in each Conference, designated as "Wild Cards," will be awarded to the next two highest-placed finishers in each Conference, ranked on the basis of regular-season points and regardless of Division.

"Seeding" of the Wild Card teams within each Divisional Playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The first-place finisher with the highest number of regular-season points in the Conference will be matched against the Wild Card team with the lowest number of regular-season points, and the first-place finisher with the second-highest number of regular-season points in the Conference matched against the Wild Card team with the second-lowest number of regular-season points.

The Playoffs will proceed as follows:

? #1 vs. #4 / #2 vs. #3:winners play each other for berth in Conference Championship

? Conference Finals: Two advancing teams in the West and two advancing teams in the East meet in Conference Championship

? Eastern and Western Conference Champions will meet in Stanley Cup Final.

Sure the division looks stacked right now, but the NYI are bad, the Craps aren't much better, Carolina is a mediocre team in a shitty division now, which is why they are winning it. Philly has issues, but they also have Pittsburghs number and Pittsburgh has a lot of cap space tied up in Cincy/Geno/Staal/MAF. Going forward even the Rags will have issues unless they get another good d-man in front of Lundquist and Broduer is a season or two at most from retirement, which will do the Devils.

The division isn't as stacked as it looks....if the CBJ draft well and continue to play hard like they've been doing in probably the best division in hockey (again), they will be just fine.

Not too long ago there were rumors of the Phoenix Coyotes moving to Seattle (or Quebec).

Yeah....we will see. Phoenix (the city) is fighting to keep them FWIW.

NHL still talking to potential Coyotes buyers but situation starting to mirror Atlanta?s move to Winnipeg

National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman said today (Mar 14, 2013) the league continues to talk about ownership groups about buying the Phoenix Coyotes and keeping them in Glendale.
The question for the Coyotes? future in Arizona is whether the NHL has begun or might already be talking to potential team buyers in other markets. Quebec City, suburban Toronto, Seattle, Oklahoma City, Las Vegas and Portland could all be in the mix if the NHL starts looking at the relocation option for the Coyotes.
That is what happened in 2011 when the Atlanta Thrashers were sold to a deep-pocketed ownership group that moved the team to Winnipeg.
That same group ? True North Sports & Entertainment ? had also talked to the NHL about buying and moving the Coyotes.
The NHL had the sale and move of the Thrashers to Winnipeg ready to go right after the 2011 season.
Coyotes fans do not want to see that happen after this season.
Bettman?s comments were during a conference call today on NHL realignment. They also come after a bid by Greg Jamison to buy the league-owned Coyotes failed to meet a city of Glendale Jan. 31 deadline to qualify for a $300 million arena deal.
The NHL has owned the Coyotes since buying them out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009 for $140 million. The ownership saga and the inability to sell the team to a local owner has been going on for close to four years.

Count me in. Given the CBJ's track record of actually being awarded the number 1 overall pick, I think it's a poor strategy to play for draft position. Winning cures a lot of ills and this is not a bad way to get started.
