Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

This might be the year for me to become the Crew fan I've always wanted to be.

I said the same thing last year. That team was really difficult to watch at times. After the first half last night my way-too-early assessment was that this season was headed for more of the same. Maybe full seasons from Arrieta and Higuian will change that, along with the addition of Oduro. They certainly provided some entertainment in the second half.

My extremely bold prediction of 2013 was that Higuain would be MLS player of the year. Homer pick, yes. Realistic possibility? Absolutely.

Josh Williams seems to provide some flashes of pure athletic awesomeness at least once per game. His shot on goal in the first minute was pretty impressive, and his goal to put us up 2-0 was just as nice. The shot in the first minute summed up most of his season last year. So close, but nothing in the back of the net. Hopefully he can provide more of those moments with results like the goal in the 88th minute.

He put a couple in last year, but I see what you are saying. Most of his struggles came from the lack of CB depth last season due to all the injuries. He had to play a lot more CB than RB/LB, and that just doesn't allow him to push up the field as much as he likes to. I personally love having him play LB/RB because it gives Gaven, Meram, Higuain, etc a big body to cross it in to.

I definitely prefer him at RB/LB, I was just referring to him being very unlucky last season. I like Gaven, Arrietta, Higuain, and company, but there's just something about Williams that makes him one of my favorite players to watch.

Definitely. I was at the game where he had a wide open goal, and his header went over the bar. Couldn't help but feel bad. He's definitely one of the bright spots on the team right now. And having two CB's (who hopefully remain healthy) to take the weight of the back line off of his shoulders a bit, can only help his game come along even more.

I was impressed with our passing at this early point in the season. You can tell there's some chemistry out there, even with some of the new guys like Oduro. I hope that's a sign of what's to come.

Despite our defense rarely getting tested, there were times where once they got a little momentum on the offensive end or the Crew turned the ball over in the defensive end, Chivas had some really dangerous chances. We'll have to shore that up. Not sure how the Hebrew Hammer got a hand on that one 3-on-1 breakaway on goal. Save of the week nominee for sure. I like Glauber back there with Marshall. I thought he played a solid game yesterday in his debut. I hope Williams appeased the soccer gods for how snakebitten he was last year with goals getting called back. For being a defender, he sure has a nose for the goal on restarts.

If Federico keeps up what he's doing, you're going to look like Nostradomus, TTM. Just hope he can keep healthy, because I think teams are going to target him like Chivas did last night.

Overall, doesn't get much better than 3 points on the road in the season opener. Bought Crew season tickets for the first time this year. Can't wait for the home opener in a couple weeks.

The best move the team made this season vs. last season is the signing of players BEFORE the season (hell, even before the pre-season this year). This slight adjustment could pay off HUGE by the end of the year, as I think this is one of the most talented teams in the MLS. On paper, at least.

As for Higuain, I am well aware teams will target him. What makes a good player great, is when that team targets you, how do you respond? The good to mediocre players will get frustrated and throw fits (Andres Mendoza), the great one's get pissed off and score goals (Federico). All I have to say, is Guillermo must have some SERIOUS pull in Argentina to snag up Gonzalo's brother, and get him into the MLS. Granted, he wasn't in a top tier division when they signed him. But he's certainly looking like a top tier talent. At least on this side of the Atlantic.

Crew officials talk about a goal of 10,000 season tickets but remain tightlipped over how many have been sold, which would seem to indicate that they aren’t close to that figure.

The last time a team official reported any kind of season-ticket figure in T he Dispatch was February 2012 when general manager Mark McCullers said the number had topped the previous season’s total of “about 5,000.” Since then, McCullers has said that last season’s figure was 30 percent higher than the previous one, but he always declined to give a number.

This week McCullers said that season-ticket sales again have surpassed last season’s and again declined to reveal the actual numbers. Thirty percent of 5,000 would be another 1,500 tickets, so it seems fair to say the figure is still somewhere between 6,000 and 7,000. That’s a long way from 10,000, which might explain why the Hunt family, which owns the Crew, supposedly has a policy of not releasing figures. If the figures were positive, that probably wouldn’t be the policy.

Okay so turns out none of the shirts were on sale, but once I saw the long sleeved beauty I couldn't resist. Happy Crewsmas Eve!
