Comparisons between LSU v OSU defensive personnel

All three of those teams have played better offenses than OSU. I see OSUs #1 ranking but I am just wondering if it is a paper tiger... But do not take that as an insult, LSU's defense has turned out to be a paper tiger.

But two of the three teams you have listed are in the SEC, where the defenses are too fast for the offenses to do anything.

I would be interested in seeing if you could find some stats to back that statement up, perhaps you could and I am wrong but I doubt it.

And this will be the best secondary you have faced all year. I think it has been one of the best at OSU in some time. And thats a big statement coming from DB U. Malcolm Jenkins is 6'1" 208 lbs. and a top 15 pick if he comes out. Donald Washington is almost as big and some say is an even better cover corner. Free safety Anderson Russel might be our fastest player on defense and he would probably have six more picks this year if he could catch the fucking ball. Kurt Coleman our strong safety is a tad undersized but is a playmaker. All four can run, cover, and hit with the best of them. And our nickel back Chimdi Chekwa won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors after his play against Purdue, so there is little drop off.

I think we win, although im not extremely confident, but our secondary is the least of our problems.

Look, everyone here says there is no speed difference. I agree, so there is no DBs that OSU can throw at us that we have not already seen. I do not see any #1 picks in the OSU secondary. Am I wrong?
#1 overall, probably not. But Malcolm Jenkins will be a first-round pick when he goes, you can count on it.

This secondary is the best you will have seen. Even if they don't have that blazing SEC speed.

Yes, those three have played better passing offenses, on average... but each has played essentially the same schedule (so far as passing numbers of opponents are concerned.) In this respect, I'm willing to give Auburn more credit than I did earlier, in as much as they played a tougher passing against schedule (60) and only gave up 30 yards per game more. I'm not sure what the difference is, so I guess I'd be willing to call it "even" as between Ohio State and Auburn. Virginia Tech and Arkansas, in my view, are still out of the conversation, although I'd give a bump to Arkansas over my initial idea on the matter. Virginia Tech, however... forget them.

With respect to overall offense against:

Ohio State....Rank..Auburn.......Rank..Va Tech....Rank..Ark.......Rank
YSU............NR...Kansas St.....42...ECU.........72...Troy........17
Akron.........112...South Fl......39...LSU.........20...Bama........76
Washington.....62...Miss. St.....113...Ohio........81...UK..........25
Northwestern...31...New Mex. St...34...Bill/Mary...NR...North Tex...49
Minnesota......50...Vandy........104...NC.........106...Chattan.....NR
Purdue.........35...Florida.......13...Clemson.....47...Aub........102
Kent State.....80..Ark............16...Duke.......118...Ole Mis.....93
Mich. St.......33...LSU...........20...BC..........27...Fla Int....119
Penn State.....58...Ole Miss......93...Ga Tech.....67...South Car...77
Wisconsin......44...Tenn Tech.....NR...Flast.......83...Tenny.......56
Illinois.......36...Georgia.......71...Miami......111...Miss.St....113
Michigan.......75...Alabama.......76...UVA........101...LSU.........20
Avg..........56.0................56.4............75.7.............67.0

Now, in terms of overall offenses faced, we see that Ohio State has played the harder schedule in terms of offenses against. Slightly over Auburn, and well in front of Va Tech and Arkansas. I suppose what this tells me, and it's just my conclusion, that are surely others, is that yes, Auburn and Ohio State have similar performance against similar schedule types. As above, in my mind the 30 yard per game average difference accounts for the schedule difference, placing - as you originally asserted - Auburn and Ohio State's secondary on a similar level. Arkansas and Virginia Tech, however, are not in the same conversation.

LSU did put 319 on Auburn.... but then, in triple OT they only put 209 on Ark. Which tells me... all this is meaningless and I've wasted an hour. :p

Edit: And the "real" analysis of all this I would have to defer to DaddyBigBucks and his various composites. If you haven't seen ThisT hread do yourself a favor and look it over. The raw numbers are pressed through important lenses there in ways I don't fully understand, but essentially reveal how, in this case, a defense does as against an opponents average. That is to say, for example, that Ohio State allows opponets to pass per attempt, on average, for 67% of that opponents average per game. Meaning, when facing Ohio State, a team can expect to perform 67% as well as they have during the rest of the season on that metric. LSU opponents, on this same metric can expect a 79% success rate compared to their typical ability, Va Tech 80% Auburn 83% and Ark 89% and so on ending with Navy at 130%, meaning Navy opponents can expect to do 30% better than they usually do....

Kiper's 2008 Mock Draft has Jenkins going 30th to San Fran, the 2nd CB taken (Behind Justin King, which I personly think is ridiculous. King - in colllege - has never impressed me.)

I agree BKB - unless King has a super outing at the combines AND Jenkins has a lousy outinng there I cannot see why anyone would automatically pick King's name first. King's skills looked much better as a Freshman than they have in subsequent years - and that is a 'plaint you will hear echoed by many Nittany Lion fans.

Thanks for the comments everyone...While writing these, I understood that LSU and OSU would be rotating people in and out. In order to make things easier I took their base defenses, took what the media guides said were their starters and compared their stats.

This being said, I know some of the comparisons may be a little closer than normal. The Gholston/Pittman matchup, I have only truely seen Gholston play. I know he is an animal. Gholston has 13 (or something) sacks but only 34 tackles. Pittman has 60 tackles.

I will edit the post and put in Washington. When I posted it, the news just broke out about how he may be suspended. I will put him back in and make a decision again. All of my notes and information is on my work computer. I will need to be there to edit it.

Awesome!!

That is a result more of Beemerball than their athletes on defense.

Fair enough but wouldn't comparing a defense versus another one deal with the coaching as well? To my recollection, Ohio State has never been beat in the air except for once and that was actually a missed tackle that caused it.

Will you agree you have not see a receiving corps like LSU this year?
