Dan Gilbert - Calls out ESPN

WestEnd

look ma no shoelaces, and I'm down with the KIIING
In today's Plain Dealer:

Q & A WITH CAVALIERS OWNER: Gilbert shares vision of winning organization

I LOVE IT! Gilbert just "gets" it. People who think that Gilbert was way out of line with the whole Silas firing are condoning everything that is wrong with the NBA ... complete lack of emphasis on the team nature of the game and rampant personal agendas causing the game to turn into a circus. For some reason this has become accepted in the NBA to the point that it was GILBERT'S fault that the team bombed.

Anyway, really, I just had to post this here because I love how Gilbert calls out ESPN and Stephen A Smith ....

Gilbert:

"The "LeBron is disgruntled/is leaving stories" did not come from LeBron or anyone else in his camp. It came from short-term thinkers and media entertainers posing as journalists. These people want to boost ratings, sell more newspapers or believe the west and east coast cities are in some way superior to places like "Cleveland" or "Detroit" and can't figure out why anyone (with a big name) would want to stay there. They are dead wrong and we will prove them wrong."

Gilbert part II (responding to rumors he passed notes to Silas during a game asking to play certain guys):

"Obviously, that is completely false. Can you imagine an owner doing that? It is so absurd, you have to laugh at it. Then again, the "ESPN Entertainer" who said it is the same guy who made up the story about "Jim Paxson being fired within 48 hours" when it was completely untrue and never even discussed here at all. He is also the same guy who made up stories about "LeBron's mother not liking the new ownership team." This guy, lets call him "John A. Doe" is an entertainer, not a journalist. Most people who know basketball realize what a phony this guy is and how he primarily blurts out fantasy on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the Internet has sprung up a bunch of these lazy characters that just read each other's nonsense and rewrite the same story with a few new adjectives. They don't do any real work. They never called me or anyone else for comment. They never asked me if any of this BS was true or not.

Sooner or later, enough of their garbage is written that you become labeled a "meddlesome owner" or a "spoiled rich kid" or your team is now "Dan's house of horrors."

At first, I became angry at it. Now I just laugh it off. I am too focused on the real job of building the Cavaliers into a championship organization than to spend my time paying attention to these muckrakers."

I love this guy. Screw ESPN.

I can only imagine the rant that Stevie is going to have the next time he gets on Sportscenter. I wouldn't be surprised if he calls Gilbert racist. I can't even watch PTI when that talking head is on with Skippy or Dan LaGaytard.

This has been a long time coming. ESPN and the other sports media conglomerates have been crying in their milk ever since the Cavs drafted Lebron. "Please, please, please let New York have him." These are the same idiots blasting Detroit heading into last year's NBA Finals. ESPN IS AN ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK, NOT A SPORTS NEWS NETWORK. The sooner people figure this out, the sooner they will be able to dispel each of their so-called "news" stories the same way they dispel what is in the National Enquirer.

On a side note: I think this can officially put to rest the ridiculous rumors that Tim Legler or Greg Anthony are being considered for the GM position - rumors started by the same media Gilbert is blasting.

It's great to see Screamin' A. Smith get called out. It's pretty rare for an owner to attack a member of the media, even though he didn't use his name. The "John A. Doe" thing was a pretty funny, not-so-subtle hint.

Now watch all of his "media brethren" join together in attacking Gilbert. Nothing riles up the media folks like having one of their own called out.

How do hacks like Smith, Bayless, and LeBatard get and keep those gigs?

Really though, the thing I wonder is how much pull these guys actually have in the minds of NBA players. I know they watch sportscenter, they watch the games. It's possible that this kind of garbage could effect who they are able to pull in free agency ... I hope not though, cause they need a ton of help.

Now that Gilbert has fought back, a bunch of those hacks will try to "poison the well" in Cleveland, so that free agents are reluctant to give LeBron some help. They'll try to create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And unfortunately, there's the talk of Nike preferring him in a bigger market. The hacks will harp on that, saying that any free agent would be foolish to go to Cleveland when Lebron will be leaving in another year or 2.

It sucks, but I can already hear John A. Doe saying it. OK, I can only imagine it, because I either turn the channel or hit the mute button as soon as I see that fool.

That waste of an ejaculation, Stephen A. Smith (man just typing his name makes me want to puke) is single-handedly trying to use his big mouth and TV time to do whatever he can to get him out of Cleveland. He makes up rumors every week that will try to influence him to leave. "He needs to be in a big market city, it is best for his career, blah, blah, blah..." HOWEVA, (I want to come through the TV and kick him right in the balls when he says that) LeBron James would have the same amount of media covering him and games on national TV if he played in Afghanistan, it doesnt make a damn bit of difference if he plays in New York. The kid is a phenom and is the face of the NBA, he is gonna be the big TV draw and open up on Sportscenter every night regardless of playing in Cleveland. Plus, anyone with an ounce of knowledge on the NBA knows the Knicks aren't winning shit for a long time. That team is horrible and has no cap space, and Isiah keeps kicking them farther down.

Out of all professional sports only football seems to get this, that the integrity of the game depends on convincing the fan in Green Bay and Kansas City that their team has just as much chance to win and go to the Super Bowl/world series/finals as any other team.

I haven't watched the NBA since Kareem Jabaar left Milwaukee for LA.

I lost interest in baseball when Steinbrenner began buying pennants.

I haven't missed either.

Ah, the stupidity of cleveland fans continue. Your clueless owner blames others for the mess he's created and you follow him like sheep. :slappy:

No wonder the city has gone the longest without a major championship.
