For the most part (Phoenix Suns and their luxury cap phobia aside),high payroll in the NBA is more of a sign of financial mismanagement than it is owner's willingness to spend. Most NBA teams are over the cap but want to get under, not so much to cut costs, but to be able to sign free agents. Cavs have some of the worst contracts in the NBA on their roster.

Yet he still pays the checks... and if you think Gilbert isn't willing to spend, look up some info on the brand new practice facility built last year in Independence. The guy is committed to winning, no doubt about it.

Mross I don't know if you saw the article I posted on the cavs a month or so ago but they have set themselves up to be able to sign a big time free agent in two years.

As have many other teams. I was more speaking to the fact that payroll in the NBA does not necessarily correlate with willingness to win.

Sure it does. Ignoring the abortion known as the Knicks, the top 11 team payrolls the past 2 seasons produced 17 playoff teams.

You don't think a lot of that might have to do with them resigning their own star players to go well over the cap? Not exactly what's going on with the Cavs.
