Dan Wheldon killed in crash

When I first heard the news I was incredibly sad. I usually don't feel too much when I hear of this stuff (don't take that the wrong way - I've experienced lots of death in my life and I've kind of become numb to it). But it was different with this for some reason. Maybe because of the nature of the crash.. it was terrible. :(

RIP. Horribly sad day.

This ranks up there with Dale Earnhardt as one of the most talented drivers to lose their lives competing in the hobby they loved.
Yep.

I'm at a loss for words. Was at Indy this year and was happy to see him win. Great great guy. A top driver too.

don't care what anyone thinks about people get who get sad over deaths of people they never met..

but this is prob the saddest I have been over a death (not including family members obviously) since Dale Sr (and I hated him while he was driving)
Felt moved enough to head down to IMS...had too.

This was about an hour and half after the announcement of his passing. Small crowd had gathered already...

And I hated Sr. too (#24 fan), but remember being sad at my young age. This one affects me too, not sure why.

I have close friends working in IRL (roommate...and his father is pretty high up.). It'll be an interesting trip back from Vegas for them. :(

Yea, not sure why this one affecting me either, I guess since he was such a great guy and I liked watching him race, I was also excited to see him replace Danica at Andretti. Yea, Im a #24 fan as well, but I seem to remember on verge of tears when I heard Dale died (I was 13). Who knows if they will return to Vegas. And not just because of the death but because so many drivers before the race were complaining about how unsafe it was, then this happened.

I also feel bad for Dario, man won the championship, but can't be happy about it because of this....anyone see his reaction when he was sitting in the car after they learned the news? Dude was just balling his eyes out, was sad to see

They cut away from Wheldon's camera to view the wreck. We quite literally saw the man's last seconds in life right before us....

*shudders*

I'm sorry but open wheel racing is a bit TOO dangerous. Prayers go out to Wheldon. :(

At Indianapolis they go about 230, its part of open wheel racing (but there they get a little bit more spread out)

anyways, RIP Dan, one of my Indy drivers :(

Let's be precise here: This isn't a problem inherent to open wheel racing. It's a problem inherent to racing on oval superspeedways with banked turns. Look at the record of fatalities for open wheel F1 & F2 racing where they race on road-style circuits - it's a huge difference between that and what has happened in NASCAR/CART/IRL in the past thirty years.

To further illustrate the point.... Most dangerous track in the history of Formula 1?

Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

(Second is Nurburgring, but, that place is just stupid insane... period... and they don't race on it anymore for a reason)

But of course, its a lot easier to put in a chicane in a road course than it is at the brickyard.

man, currently watching NASCAR countdown before the dega race, and they are doing a piece on Wheldon,

the girl that's the host is really struggling to get through it, you can tell she's getting ready to break down..

just finished it, props to her getting through that, you could really tell near the end she was losing it, I dunno who she is, but I thought I heard her say she was a drivers wife, but not sure

yep, Husband is Ryan Briscoe (driver in the IRL) so that's why she was so touched, she prob knew him really well
