DB Cameron Burrows (Official Thread)

It's basically out there everywhere now so the only one we are scooping is Tim May...but the Chris Ash effect is already in play...Cam has been moved to free safety. Love this move.

Can't say how stoked I am about this - it's also about putting the most talent on the field. While he has many years to get to the Malcolm Jenkins type of player, I think he's going to be put in a position similar to that. Very versatile, can be brought up in the box or drop back with no issues. Love, love, love this.

1. Does that mean Vonn is strong safety or will these two will be battling for 1 spot?
2. Does Ash have a true "strong" and "free" safety, or more "left" and "right" safety?

Edit: Damn, read your message about him and Vonn both potentially starting. But does that mean Vonn is strong safety, or a "left" "right" system where it doesn't matter.

Burrows will be a big, physical safety. Great move and strengthens that position. Don't need him at corner. We got plenty of guys there.
Free Safety definition...Definition: A defensive player who lines up the deepest in the secondary and defends the deep middle of the field against the pass.

Does Powell stay at safety or does he drop back down to "star"?

And does Bell stay at safety or drop down to "star"?

I was thinking the same thing,at least regarding Powell. I liked him on the field,he was inconsistent because it was his first year as a starter, but he got better throughout the season. I'd like to keep him at Star, but Worley(and also reeves in the nickel) will be tough to hold off.

Putting Burrows at S with Bell increases the athleticism at the position, as well as our cover ability there and gives coach Ash a lot to work with. Give me starters of Grant and apple or Conley at CB with any of the 3 mentioned in the nickel/star and I'm good.

Agreed with everything said pretty much. Burrows and Bell at safety gives us HUGE star power at safety that we haven't seen in years, plus continuity for at least a couple years. My early favorites are Burrows and Bell at safety, Grant and Apple at corner (obviously Conley/Reeves will push hard), and Powell at Star with Worley getting some time. Curious to see if Darron Lee also plays some Star. Regardless of how it shakes out, I love the move. Outside of Bell, I really didn't see any options at safety...Thompson might be a player down the line but is coming off a rough injury. Powell was the only other option and Tanner is a special teamer it seems (and a good one, definitely not knocking that).

Wade, I stand with you and everything, but what do you mean about the "Ash effect"? Just putting his stamp on personnel, or something else?

I always envisioned Cam as an awesome safety.

Ash is who influenced this decision. I think we could see other position changes until he gets the best athletes on the field to run his defense.

This. The coverage at safety the last couple of years has been abysmal. I haven't seen so many out of position plays on the receiver and ball in all my years watching Ohio State football as I've seen in the last two.

The coaches of past recruited guys that could run support but didn't have much pass coverage skills or ball skills. Look at the low numbers of interceptions by safeties in the last few years. Our safeties were more likely to allow the catch then hit the guy, then to cover the man and ball and react to it. That's how we got dinked and dunked to death since urban has arrived. The athletes that urban has brought in, and if you look at the best defenses, they have ball hawking S that can play centerfield and take away long balls. We haven't had that. The UF teams that won NCs had athletic S who could make plays on th ball and still hit, but focused on shutting down the pass as well
