DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

I think it was well known that he wasn’t brought in to be a recruiter, he was brought in to improve the defense. And in essence he did. He said he would allow 3-5 big plays a game, and he did all season. But he stopped the opposing team the rest of the game. I heard that outside of the 5 massive plays against scUM, they only had less than 150yds all game. Players didn’t make stops in space.

I also am not a fan of bringing back re-hires and thinking the sound of the old band will be the same. Ash was great at the time he was at OSU, and his time has passed.

They averaged 3 yards per play on the non touchdowns.

See Coombs, Kerry. Love him as a person and wouild run through a wall for him but as a DC he was yesh and he didn't vastly raise our CB play when he came back either
Ash and Coombs are no where near alike in terms of skill sets.

I threw Ash out as someone who was a solid D Coordinator and was successful in that role. Not a great HC, but a solid D coordinator. Isn’t that what the argument most people are throwing out about Day, solid OC but not HC?

I’m not saying that Knowles isn’t the guy, yet. Just like a lot of folks are not saying Day isn’t the guy, yet.

Yes but our CB's didn't return to the level of his first run which is what I was getting at more than the DC issues

The only things I blame Knowles for in that game are not playing Hall most of the game and not playing enough zone. He could have used a zone look to confuse a bad QB and blitzed out of it for run or pass while keeping someone deep for the busted plays. Unless Hall is still injured then he'd get a pass but that seems like a cop out at this point.

He had the gameplan because we were killing them in their "vaunted run game." He can only call the plays and hope the guys are in the positions they are supposed to be in, and make a play when the opportunity arises. They did neither.

I blame coaching for the Offense but the players blew the Defense.
