Discussion about an Early Signing Period

Exactly... IF you set a new earlier date they'll adjust. For one these kids usually know who are going to recruit them by March or April. If the deadline was set I believe the official visits would be set up in the summer. It would actually be better for the coaches and the current players because this way the recruits can be given full attention. Where this cannot be accomplished if you have them to a game... For sure there's no substitution for 105,000 people in the shoe on saturdays..

I think this has become way too much of a circus act though and I just wish kids would maybe take this thing a little bit more serious. Like I saw someone say, if someone says they're coming to OSU then backs out because it was some sort of publicity stunt then that hurts OSU. How? Because if we are in dire need of a DT for example (true) and we have a guy who commits but he was just pulling our chain. Now, because we thought this DT prospect was a lock, we ignored player X who really wanted to be a buckeye who has already committed elsewhere. Now we have ZERO DT's in a recruiting class and we're scrambling to find kids suitable to fill the need. If every kid just gave straight answers we'd be able to fill our needs a lot faster, but thats not the case.

Curry is right on, and a mid/late July signing date would be exactly the right time, after camp, before the HS season and 2 a days kick in. I think this would also motivate Tressel and Peterson to be a tad more aggressive in their evaluations/offers-just a little cronstructive criticism!

I think this question would fit in this thread, wasnt sure where else to put it...

But can a recruit take an Official visit during the spring time...If so that could also help the idea of a early signing day...

If instead of waiting to take the visits they took them in the spring or in the summer and then there was a early signing period in say August that would let kids that really want to visit the campuses and see what they have to offer, but also want to get the process over with do it early in the year...

For example a guy like Mike Adams, says he wants to take his visits b4 deciding so he takes them in the spring time signs in August and then can concentrate on his season and not have to worry about recruiters, recruiting services calling him every 5 minutes to get an update...

Official visits are not allowed until opening day of classes in the senior year.

Which, of course, means no real reason.

Exactally, unless there is something that is so bad about them taking official visits in the spring and summer instead of the fall I am all for it. I think it would also help the northern schools as the weather wouldnt be so bad for traveling and enjoying the visit...

With Meyer one of those against the idea the SEC mulled over, but did not adopt the idea of an early signing period.

Meyer was particularly successful in late signings last year.

SEC coaches disagree on adding early signing period
By MARK LONG, AP Sports Writer
May 29, 2007
DESTIN, Fla. (AP) -- The Southeastern Conference opened its annual spring meeting Tuesday with talk about adding an early signing period to college football.
There was plenty of debate.

Some say an early signing period could reduce the number of high school prospects committing to one school, then de-committing and signing with another. The idea drew support from Kentucky's Rich Brooks and Vanderbilt's Bobby Johnson. But Florida's Urban Meyer strongly disapproved, and others were somewhat skeptical.
"Right now, the idea of it is pretty good," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "But I'm afraid what might follow is more than we ask for probably."

....
"It would be a cost-saving thing certainly," Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said. "The last two or three weeks, at least, there's a lot of baby-sitting going on, probably more than that. You kind of got to be there because somebody else may be."
Meyer has been one of the more active coaches late in the recruiting season, getting players to change their minds and sign with Florida.
Not surprisingly, Meyer hated the idea of schools being able to lock up recruits in early September or mid-December -- two of the potential dates being tossed around.
"I'm not comfortable signing kids you don't know," Meyer said. "I'd rather move later. I want to quit making mistakes. A mistake in recruiting just devastates a program. The only way to minimize the mistake-factor is to get to know someone.
"I think they should all come to camp. I think we should know their families. I think they should meet my family. That's when you usually get a good deal going. If you have an early signing period, that's not going to happen."
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier agreed, saying he would prefer to stick with the current model.

....

I call BS on this for the Gators-the article touched on this-Meyer and Spurrier know they will not be able to bug, harass, cajole, boosterize, and otherwise influence recruits who sign in late July. It's funny how the coaches who would benefit from this the most-UK and Vandy are the ones promoting it, and the powerful coaches are against this. This would be a good move to control the snakepit that is SEC recruiting. I do, however, think a lot of kids from poor and/or rural areas in the South are more susceptible to the lines SEC coaches throw out to get them to change their commitments-the might commit to LSU in October, but not really be sure of what is going on and decommit to Georgia or Tennessee on signing day-the kind didn't change hs mind, he never really made it up in the first place.

It would depend on how such an early signing period were employed. If it weren't crafted carefully, it would only initiate the poaching tactics weeks or months earlier, and Fulmer's so called "baby sitting" would still be a problem. I'd hope there'd be some way to screen kids who sign on early, since coaching changes and academic status are issues for both recruit and school alike. Kids are pretty indecisive, so it would have to be carefully instituted. But it is definitely a step in the right direction, to open the dialogue. I hope it gets discussed on the national level as well.

If its done right, an early signing period makes all the sense in the world. If a kid KNOWS he wants to go to a certain school, like the guy that verbals at the spring football game, or has literally bleeded a certain school's colors since before he was 8, why should he have to put up with guys knocking on his door for the rest of the year? Recruiters often have a hard time taking "no" as an answer.

Should a kid who verballed in May have to worry about some coach showing up at his high school with a bag full of promises in January, even though he clearly doesn't want them? Give the high schoolers some peace of mind if they know what they want to do, rather than worrying about the next time the phone rings, or waking up to dozens of text messages.

Honestly, if basketball can do it effectively, why can't football? The differences between football and basketball, when it comes roster makeup and recruiting tactics don't seem insurmountable in stature to me. Its doable, and it helps the kids.

And Urban's line is a load of crap. Wanting to "know" families, and "know" kids? Are you telling me that you can't develop a relationship with a kid and his family over, say, 8, 9, 10 months? I know you're famous for your backyard cookouts Urban, but is that step really necessary when you're trying to hand out scholarships? I've got friends that were given plenty of scholarship money, and they never met their school's Dean of Admissions, let alone his/her family.

And I know, a football coach is much more intimately in touch with a student athlete's life, but it illustrates a point, that we don't need to be all buddy buddy with such and such a kid's family. Sometimes, kids and families make the best decisions for their family and their son from an objective standpoint - which gets harder and harder to do when you've got half a dozen coaches telling you to de-commit, and join the fun at ______ University.

Come on now, who are you kidding Urban. These coaches know who some of these kids are since they time they're freshman or sophomores in HS. Wanting to "know" kids is just a warm and fuzzy line that sounds good to the average joe, that holds no water at the end of the day. These coaches want kids to be "on the market" as long as possible, end of story.
