<!-- BODY TEXT --> <!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT--> It's not even a close race. Drew Henson's unceremonious exodus from the Dallas Cowboys assures him the status as the most overrated, over-hyped "star" this state has ever produced.
His lone competitive achievement while playing for perhaps the three biggest brand names in their respective sports -- Michigan football, the New York Yankees and the Cowboys -- was a victory at Ohio State in 2000 to win a share of the Big Ten championship for the Wolverines.
Henson tried to be all things at all times to all people, and while that fattened the bottom line on his financial statement (reportedly in the neighborhood of $14 million from the Yankees and Cowboys), it compromised his commitment. You can't take shortcuts when learning how to hit a major-league curveball or orchestrating an intricate NFL offense.
It's a shame that he wasn't 100% focused on quarterbacking from the start because Henson certainly possessed the physical jewels to shine in the NFL.
Has any other Michigan-produced athlete made so much while accomplishing so little as a professional? At least Charles Rogers proved he belonged in the NFL for five games before flaming out.

Let's see, 14 million just to sign, God knows how much along the way and he walks off on two sound knees and an unscrambled head, a college degree and the chance to do what he wants to do anywhere in the world. Yep, huge Dud.

Henson joins Vikings

Minnesota signed quarterback Drew Henson to the practice squad, adding another arm while rookie Tarvaris Jackson recovers from injury. Henson, a former Michigan starter who spent three seasons playing professional baseball, signed an eight-year deal with Dallas in 2003 that included $3.5 million guaranteed, but he never got his NFL career going.

Lions bring QB Henson back to Michigan as backup

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Drew Henson, a high school and college standout who has struggled at the professional level in baseball and football.
Terms of the signing, announced on the team's website, weren't disclosed.
Henson was signed after second-year quarterback Drew Stanton sprained the thumb on his throwing hand in practice Thursday. He will be sidelined about a month.
The 28-year-old Henson shared quarterback duty at Michigan with Tom Brady. He played three seasons as a third baseman in the New York Yankees' organization before the NFL's Houston Texans drafted him in the sixth round, 192nd overall, in 2003.
Henson was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2004, started one game and was released at the end of the 2006 preseason. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings, who released him after training camp in 2007.

Ex-Wolverine QB Drew Henson plans to make most of chance

Former Wolverine, Yankee to play in exhibition finale

BY JO-ANN BARNAS ? FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER ? August 27, 2008

The music seemed to suit the mood and the moment, reminding Drew Henson that the next 1 1/2 hours would be no different than before.
So when the horn sounded, Henson, in his fifth day as a Lion, took off with his teammates to the far side of the practice field as Sam Cooke's soulful rendition of "Chain Gang," a favorite of coach Rod Marinelli, began blaring from the speakers:
"All day long they work so hard ...
Till the sun is goin' down
Working on the highways and byways and wearing a frown
You hear them moanin' their lives away
Then you hear somebody sa-a-ay..."
Tuesday in Allen Park, it was the sound of Henson calling plays from the huddle. The sound of footsteps dashing a few yards upfield from handoffs to No. 34 (Kevin Smith), then No. 28 (Tatum Bell), then No. 29 (Brian Calhoun), then No. 44 (Artose Pinner).
