DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

Defensive tackle picks OSU
Sunday, July 29, 2007 3:53 AM

Highly rated defensive tackle Garrett Goebel said that as colleges and football programs go, Ohio State and Michigan have a lot in common on the upside. But when he faced his moment of truth this weekend, he picked Ohio State for a significant reason.

"Ohio State was where I felt the most comfortable," Goebel said last night from his home in Villa Park, Ill. "But it was hard to choose between the two because, really, I saw nothing negative at either place."

Thank you, XPUNISHR ...

It's great to know about the character and ethic of Garrett and the fit with OSU/JT. Character and work ethic are more important than talent.

Thank you for guiding him to the important things. Best wishes to the family. Maybe I can go see him play this year - live near Lockport so it's not a stretch.
Does Montini have a website and schedule? Thanks

XP = XPUNISHR = Brian E. Goebel, who has been Garrett's recruiting manager (attended every "unofficial visit" besides his 2nd trips to OSU & Notre Dame), academic & spiritual advisor for many years. I am Garrett's uncle however he is more like a son to me as I spend time with him everyday (I see Garrett more than my own children who reside with their mother 20 miles from my home).

I have counseled Garrett in many area's and shared with him my own college football experience along with a plethora of poor decisions I made which hopefully Garrett will avoid as he has shown maturity well beyond his age thus far and I envision him continuing to lead a GOD HONORING lifestyle. Humble beyond my imagination and has had the self control to remain focused & dedicated to achieving the goals he sets for himself. There may be better athletes than Garrett but I have seen nobody OUTWORK him (that probably comes from working concrete for his dad's company since age 8)

Welcome to the greatest football family on the planet. We're ecstatic such a great group of people are joining our team. That's a wonderful thing you did in mentoring that young man to direct him to a proper decision for him. Unfortunately, many don't have the same support system you and the rest of your family have provided. Buckeye or not (definitely proud he is), Garrett seems like the type of young man who will well represent the people who care about him and his success. He'll wear the scarlet and grey with pride, honor and the humble aura many have worn in the historic tradition we enjoy. Congrats on the huge decision, and I personally look forward to watching him grow as a man. Columbus and Buckeye Nation are his oyster! Slurp it down and enjoy!
