DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

A SAD DAY INDEED......for Montini Catholic & GARRETT GOEBEL

This past Sat. Montini Catholic lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs to Marian Central Catholic (whom they beat 33-0 in reg. season) by a score of 29-15. Montini was losing 14-0 in third qtr. yet took the lead 15-14 with five minutes left in the game.....the rest is too nauseating for me to even think about ............sorry

But on the bright side, Goebel finished his high school career in memorable fashion!!!(Or as a true "Gladiator" would end a battle) Once again facing IL standout lineman (Sean Cwynar, ND bound) OT/DE whom Tom Lemonhead stated is "Quicker, better def.player than Goebel"......What a farce!!! Goebel was EVERYWHERE. Montini had three man DL (nickel Pkg.) so "the Gladiator" was facing Cwynar +1 or 2 additional blockers while pass rushing Marian's stud QB (Jon Budmyar)
GOEBEL HAD 1 QB SACK, 1 Caused Fumble, 3 TACKLES FOR LOSS & KNOCKED QB TO GROUND AS HE RELEASED BALL ON FIVE SEPERATE OCCASIONS (2 of which I was surprised to see Budmyar get up...a stud like I said) On one of Goebel's tackles for a loss he unfortunately ended Marian's starting RB season...after slamming him into the ground and falling atop this poor kid he ended up breaking ? Pappas's leg (Not intentional as Garrett had respected this player since soph. year)

***I will MAKE SURE about 10-15 plays from this game are put on Goebel's highlight DVD & have it put on this site.!! Most impressive PASS RUSH I have seen in high school (Given his opposistion's quality & quantity!!!)

Offensively....typical solid, relentless play with enough P-cakes to put a smile on Aunt Jemima's face.

Yet all that Garrett strived for since Nov. 06 had ended abrubtly......I have never seen Garrett so distraught. Very painful for me....yet he came over Sat. PM and we discussed THE FUTURE!!!

Plus the fact than Garrett will be a mainstay on a perennial national power and playing for Jim Tressel, while Cwynar will be, well, playing for Charlie Weis...

We know one thing...Cwynar will be well-fed...something tells me chow is a priority in South Bend for the coaching staff. No water breaks in practice...just twinkie breaks.

Back to Garrett...I would like to extend my condolences to "The Gladiator". My HS career ended in similar abrupt fashion and while you eventually get over it, you always remember how awful it feels to walk off that field the last time. Especially when you know you should be advancing to the next game.

Garrett's stats were impressive in defeat...and good luck to him in wrestling this winter!!!

All I'm gonna say is that It does suck about losing in the playoffs to a team that you beat the crap out of in the year. What this tells me is that one there were some major adjustments made by one side or one team when there weren't adjustments on the other side.

This happens to all the best teams. However unfortuanate for the players, it really is what makes great coaches.

Garrett is the best DT in the nation in all our minds and that will not change. He is the meanest and the toughest. And I can't wait till he is suited up in his new Scarlet and Grey Armor and just crushing every ball carrying unlucky fool that we face.

I only saw Garrett's name listed as taking an Unofficial visit back in the Spring, then again to attend Summer Football Camp.

Has he taken an Official Visit to C-bus yet? If not, any chance he shows up at the game this weekend? That might help take the sting out of an untimely playoff exit. :)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....No suicides at the end of practice either, just cheeseburger races....

My HS hockey career ended very similarly, and it does suck pretty badly to go out like that. But from everything I've read, Garrett seems to be the type of player that will bounce back..

I just hope he doesn't choose to do it against Michigan

FINAL THREE
FOX Chicago and the Illinois High School Association have named the finalists--Mount Carmel's Steve Filer, Marian Central's Sean Cwynar and Montini's Garret Goebel -- as FOXHILITES Chicago.com football player of the year. It was announced Pat Mullen, the station's VP and GM.

And the #1 reason that Garrett Goebel does not have a "snow ball"s chance in HELL" of WINNING THIS AWARD IS BELOW..................

Patrick J. (Pat) Mullen is Vice President and General Manager of WFLD Fox Chicago A native of Pentwater, Mich., born July 6, 1955, Mullen attended the University of Michigan

275.Garrett Goebel (Sr.)

Would you say this looks pretty close? I can't wait to see Garrett wrestle this year. I coached against Gregerson last year in 8th grade and he is easily the best incoming freshmen in the state, I didn't expect to see him only at 125 though.

Yes, because I'm sure Mr. Mullen just LOVES Notre Dame players too

Unfortunately the list of "finalists'" forgot to include two other nominees, one being QB John Weinke (sp?) who has verbally commited to MICHIGAN.
This player is also the only OFFENSIVE nominee who plays a high profile / skilled position. My bet is either Weinke or Steve Filer.

***Garrett WAS NOT EVEN AWARE OF THIS AWARD, NOR WILL IT CHANGE HIS CURRENT SHORT / LONG TERM GOALS. He takes pride in TEAM AWARDS / ACCOMPLISHMENTS but individual recognition has not motivated / excited him too much
