Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim

As far as I know, if you fast travel to any of the larger cities the horse goes to the stable of that city. If you then fast travel to somewhere in Skyrim, the horse will be there when you spawn. From my experiences, horses are expensive and die easily, except for Shadowmere, the horse you get from the Dark Brotherhood quests. Hasn't died on me yet, though before in the game a purchased horse and Frost, a quest horse, both died.

Yeah, I bought a horse for the hell of it in Whiterun. It already died on me once, although I loaded a game to get it back.

They generally seem to be a huge pain in the ass that don't add much value to the game. The only thing I can see them being useful for is that they allow you to fast travel while carrying too much to run.

That's. About. It.

It would be really nice if you could turn them off so they don't show up every time you fast travel somewhere. Anyone know how to do that?

What mods has anyone added?

Reduced weight of dragon bones and scales to 1
Dragon bone weapon pack.

I'm looking for a mod that increases leveling up to two perks.
Once I hit the "more money than you can spend" point, I added some carrying cheats because sorting through inventory gets annoying. Dovahkiin's Hideout is one basement attached to all houses, so I store my stuff there for convenience. Unfortunately, I lost all of it in a recent upgrade and will have to respawn anything that is needed for future quests.

I have the first version of Wars in Skyrim, when it just spawned more random foes. It's fun to see the dragon priests swooping in and out of the artic waters. Fought about a dozen of them, one after another. The rest of the world is a little more random, and it's easy to walk into a fight.

I also tried MOAR dragons! (I think that's it). That one may have to be turned off and on, though. It's tough to get anything else done when there is a new dragon spawning every two minutes. Fighting three of them over a town at the same time is fun, though.

There's one that adds a pack of troll assassins that hunt you down. I had to take that out because too many townsfolk were being killed and I want to be able to finish whatever quests are left.

I finished the war arc, I was bugged at a certain point and I ran across a random Imperial camp today (yes I'm imperial) and when I talk to the main person, it let me continue. So that in turn let me get the Windhelm house finally. OK, now I officially think I have most things done. I am sure there are a ton of small quests to do, though

I was able to buy the Windhelm house too, despite the city being in shambles after the war.

I was running a few texture mods until the high-res textures were released by Bethesda with the CK. Now I'm using...

Dovahkiin's hideout
Better sorting
SkyUI

And two others that I can't remember the names of... one takes away the greenish/blueish tint from the game (it looks so much better without it) and the other makes nights and shadows actually dark. Torches are actually necessary sometimes now.

I assume the mods are exclusively a PC thing?

Also, fire dragons are kicking my nord ass right now (ice is a different story). I am trying to level up my blocking for "elemental block" with my shield. That should help out significantly.

Other than resistance potions and enchantments, does anyone have any other tips for taking down dragons?

Elemental fury shout + dual wielding. Once they land near you, it's over.

I usually carry two swords, a shield and a bow. I don't make a habit of dual wielding, but I go to it every time against dragons. I'm not accurate enough from long range to use the bow unless the dragon perches itself on the roof of a building or something. I use a shield in most battles, but they never seemed to be worth bothering with against dragons.

My goal when I fight one is to be near it when it lands and inflict as much damage as fast as I can without regard for my own health. Generally speaking, once you get a dragon down to less than 1/3 of its health, it's going to stay on the ground and you've pretty much won unless you do something stupid. This worked for me even at lower levels, but if your character is weak or not well armored you may want to throw some potions into the routine. At upper levels I'm carving up Elder Dragons in just a couple swings while only taking negligible damage.

Also, if you want some additional fire protection and have some gold, check out the Apparel category when visiting general merchants or in particular, the Radiant Raiment in Solitude. Enchanted apparel is not as prevalent in this game as it was in Oblivion it seems, so you're probably not going to find much of that stuff that suits your style of play just by looting. If you buy an amulet that grants Resist Fire for somewhere around 30-50% that could help a lot.

Thanks for the tips.

Don't you have to kill a dragon to learn those shouts, though? I hope it's not a fire dragon guarding the wall.

As I think about it, I believe part of the problem may be that I just leveled up to 20. My thought is that it kicked in a "harder enemy" trigger, including the dragons. I am currently pushed to the limit to even defeat some bandits right now.

I think that is likely the main problem and once I level up some more it should be easier, until the next upgrade in enemies, of course.

Getting stuck right at the border between leveling up and harder enemies makes it tough sometimes.

As I said, some additional protection against fire will help out as well so I will check out the shops. I absolutely hate spending money on anything other than houses, though.

That'll do it. I noticed significant enemy leveling at 20, 30 and 40. 30 was the worst one for me, and it coincided with the bug (which has since been fixed) that borked all of the magic resistances. That was a tough spot.

I feel for anybody that say they bought Fallout/Elder Scrolls for a console. There are a few people that just have very old PC's that can't handle it and they don't wish to upgrade, I can't argue with those people. I've heard some misconceptions and bad information spread around as to why people have bought the games for their console...

My one buddy started a game to try it out on his roommate's PS3 and decided to buy the game for PS3 as well because he didn't want to start over and makeup 3 hours of game play. I couldn't help but point out "You do know how long this game is, don't you?" A co-worker bought it for X-Box because he said his console had been collecting dust and he thought this would be a good game to dust it off for. Another coworker said he doesn't like to mod games, but I know for a fact that he plays Minecraft on PC and it's completely modded up, so I'm not buying that excuse.

Fallout/Elder Scrolls games are just not built for consoles. Yes, you can play them on console, but you're doing yourself a disservice. Theres a whole construction toolkit out there, and thousands of people that continue to add content, updates, custom bug fixes, HD textures, quests, NPCs, etc. Hell, it's been 6 years or so since Oblivion and it still has frequent mod additions every day. While not all of these mods are worth the time to download, some can make you see the game in a whole new light and give you a reason to play it through again.

I for one have always been a console gamer. It's not a fanboy thing, it's just who I am.

Even if I wanted to switch at this point I'd have to shell out for a new laptop. My current machine overheats just by watching YouTube videos and exists solely to provide a hub for managing music collection (ripping CDs and vinyl, managing inventory, backing up and syncing with other devices.). Most of my daily computer use nowadays takes place on my iPad.

Maybe if I upgrade to a MacBook Pro in the future I'll also upgrade my Skyrim experience on a Windows partition. Until that day though, I'll probably remain a console guy.
