ex-Miami/ex-Louisville LB Willie Williams (official thread)

Help me with this please........if a player requests a release how can any school give it to him/her and stipulate that you cannot go to X league? Is that a condition of the release, or just something that they do in the South? Never heard of it here, just say good-bye and good luck.

Schools can grant an athlete-student's release but block the release to specific schools (such as the school's rival or other schools in the conference). The athlete-student can still transfer to those blocked schools, but he or she can't get a scholarship for the first year.

Sports has learned.
Williams, who missed spring drills while recovering from knee surgery, must sit out the upcoming 2006 season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining once he joins the Big East powerhouse.
The Mountaineers are not only favored to capture the Big East title but they are also expected to challenge for this season's BCS championship game.
"Whatever is best for Willie, I will be in favor of," Miami head coach Larry Coker said in a statement released by the school last Tuesday.
Williams played mostly as a backup linebacker and on coverage units last year, but he felt a little out of place when he was not able to practice and compete for increased playing time in the spring.

</td> </tr> </tbody></table> The one-time top-rated linebacker prospect in the country was granted admission to Miami despite some negative publicity. He spent time in jail for violating his probation, which stemmed from 11 arrests for various burglary and other offenses during his high school days. Out of high school, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Williams was timed in the 4.4-second range in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 35-inch vertical jump and 330-pound bench press.
Williams' transfer plans fit perfectly for the Mountaineers, whose current starting weak-side linebacker – Kevin McLee – is a senior. McLee's departure will leave the position open for Williams to win next spring.
Williams may recognize at least one familiar face when he arrives on the West Virginia campus as current Mountaineers junior wide receiver/quarterback Dwayne Thompson was also a highly recruited prospect out of Dade County in Miami.
ATKINS HEADED TO BETHUNE-COOKMAN
Recently granted his release from Florida, cornerback Avery Atkins will resurface at Bethune-Cookman. Atkins, who had some off-field issues in Gainesville involving his then-girlfriend, was scheduled to be one of Florida's starting cornerbacks this season. At 5-11 and 190, he has excellent size and showed the ability to play aggressive, man-to-man coverage. He likely would have earned All-SEC honors over the next few years. The transfer to the MEAC program fits very well for Atkins since he is a native of Daytona Beach, where his new school is located. He will be considered a sophomore this season and have three years of eligibility remaining at the Division I-AA program.

I wonder if the 'U's President, Donna Shalala, wrote a recommendation letter on behalf of Willie Williams. Here's the letter she wrote 2 years ago, to justify admitting the controversial recruit.

I feel an obligation to communicate with the University community on an issue in the news.
In my experience, most higher educational institutions in this country consider institutional interests above any others in making decisions, despite protestations to the contrary that we are acting in the interests of our students, or faculty, or staff. In the case of our decision to admit Mr. Willie Williams, we probably should take a pass knowing the outcry might be damaging to our hard-earned reputation.
We choose not to in this case. Not because, as many would argue, we need his exceptional talent on the football team. Indeed, anyone who knows anything about UM football knows we have so much talent that we have the luxury of being more selective and continuing our dominance in the upper echelons of college football. We do exactly that every year; our coaches take character and the ability of a young man to successfully complete a course of study very seriously. They also know from history that it is hard to predict how well a highly-prized recruit will do or, God forbid, if an injury will destroy an athletic career. We choose to trust the experience of our coaches.
More importantly, we choose to support the recommendation of members of our faculty and staff who constituted our admissions group. They possess broad experience in reading complicated admissions applications, which in this case revealed a more accurate picture of a young man than what you have heard and read to date. Laws protecting the files of young people have resulted in inaccurate public reports--and sloppy conclusions by various so-called experts.
This is hardly a perfect applicant to the University. Oh, how we love perfection--perfect grades, perfect character, and perfect recommendations. Those are the easy ones! This young man is not perfect and has made some bad decisions--in friends, in behavior, etc. However, he is young, and his file reveals academic talent as well as the better-known athletic ability.
Mr. Williams is also one of us--a son of Miami. We have a special obligation, relationship, and commitment to the young people of our South Florida community. We want them to continue to think of us as a place of academic excellence and opportunity. My friends and advisors have suggested that some institution will take him if we don't; I believe that to be a true statement. However, our reading of his application is that he will have the possibility of a real future if he attends an institution that is both tough and demanding academically.
Therefore, as a condition of admission, we have placed the bar high for him. There will be academic conditions that he must meet to play football at Miami. Additionally, he will participate in a program that we provide for all athletes that includes mentoring, constructive counseling, and monitoring of their behavior--both on and off campus.
It may seem to you that in this case we are prepared to make a decision that, at least on the surface, seems in his interest and not ours as an institution. I believe that periodically having to make decisions like this makes us a better institution. Since it is your institution, I value your comments. Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].

Wow.

WVU won't even take him? He seemed to me to be the perfect guy to play in front of fans who do things like toss trash cans from the upper deck on top of opposing fans and whatnot.......

Maybe it's just me though.....

I'm assuming he has been released but there is probably some kind of stipulation that he cannot transfer in-conference...otherwise you know Chuck Amato would be all over him. I would not be shocked to see Fat Phil take a run at Willie. Put him and Rico McCoy together for a couple of years and that would be a heck of a LB corp.
