ex-Miami/ex-Louisville LB Willie Williams (official thread)

Damn, lol, this is some funny stuff:

"Two schools reported to be at the top of his list, <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:STATE><ST1:PLACE>West Virginia</ST1:PLACE></ST1:STATE> and <ST1:STATE><ST1:PLACE>Tennessee</ST1:PLACE></ST1:STATE>, have publicly declined interest. You know a guy's got serious issues when <ST1:STATE><ST1:PLACE>Tennessee</ST1:PLACE></ST1:STATE> won't even take him."

:slappy: Its funny because its true...

We Don't Want You, Willie

It seems former all-world recruit/convicted felon Willie Williams, who's been seeking a transfer from <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Miami</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY> because the 'Canes have yet to automatically turn over one of their starting linebacker positions to him, isn't garnering as many suitors as he might have thought. Two schools reported to be at the top of his list, <ST1:STATE><ST1:PLACE>West Virginia</ST1:PLACE></ST1:STATE> and <ST1:STATE><ST1:PLACE>Tennessee</ST1:PLACE></ST1:STATE>, have publicly declined interest. You know a guy's got serious issues when <ST1:STATE><ST1:PLACE>Tennessee</ST1:PLACE></ST1:STATE> won't even take him.
<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:P></O:P>Williams is the latest and arguably most visible example of some of the negative consequences created by our ever-increasing fascination with the recruiting world. As you may recall, Williams was the guy whose Miami Herald diary entries about his extravagant campus visits -- steak and lobster in <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Tallahassee</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY>, cheerleaders chanting his name at <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Auburn</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY>, etc. -- prompted the NCAA to invoke restrictions on such things. But taking a 17-year-old kid to Morton's isn't the problem here. The way recruits are fawned over by coaches, recruiting writers and fans from the time they first become known, it’s often a shock to their system when they finally get to school and find out they actually have to put in work.

Anyone who's ever spent time around Williams marvels about what a great kid he is, how he's actually very bright, how he's been misunderstood. That may all well be true. But word around the <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Miami</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY> program is Williams, the nation's top-rated linebacker in 2004, expected stardom to be handed to him on a platter. After failing to pass up returning starter Jon Beason on the depth chart this spring, Williams stopped showing up for voluntary workouts. Now he apparently wants out, which is actually fairly stupid considering he's already used up his redshirt year and would lose a season of eligibility by transferring. He might as well use that season at <ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Miami</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY> getting more experience and putting himself in position to win a starting job next season.

NEVER SAW IT COMING
Beason and Wright also made it clear that sophomore weak-side linebacker Willie Williams, slated behind Beason, would not exactly be part of a group hug should he change his mind about transferring.
''Extremely surprising,'' Beason said about Williams exploring other, unspecified schools. ``I talked to him a few times, and he said he had some business to take care of while we hadn't seen him [during summer workouts]. I didn't think it was a transfer until it came out in the media. Willie is a freak athlete, a great player for us on special teams, and that's what he was supposed to do as a redshirt freshman. All the great ones sat.
'As far as Coach [Larry] Coker is concerned, his hands are tied because if a guy hasn't shown up and hasn't been at any workouts, you say to yourself, `Well, if I let this guy back and he plays, there are going to be some serious cliques around the team,' people who think, 'I've been here busting my butt playing.' A guy who hasn't been a team player who comes to be a part of us is a problem.
``We'd probably get through it. There would be some serious, I don't want to say punishment, but he'd have to earn the right to be back with us.''
Wright concurred. ''That's such a main thing, the summer workouts,'' he said. `I think it would be hard for him to get back in the mix with all the quality linebackers we have. Spencer Adkins, Darryl Sharpton, all these guys who are working to get into the lineup are here every single day. We've seen their faces, we've seen them at 7-on-7s.
``I love Willie. I think he's a great kid. Do I think he's making a mistake? Of course I do. Anybody who leaves here is making a mistake. He wants to play, but you've got to put in the work . . . no matter who you are. I was the Gatorade Player of the Year in high school, and I didn't start until my third year.''

Williams considers transfer to Troy

Posted: Saturday August 5, 2006 12:21AM

MIAMI, Fla. (AP) -- Hurricanes linebacker Willie Williams is talking to Troy University about a possible transfer to the school after getting the OK from the University of Miami, a Troy official told The Miami Herald.

Troy has expressed interest and defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell has spoken with him, Ricky Hazel, Troy sports information director, told the newspaper for a story on its Web site Friday night. Hazel said those talks would continue. Also, the University of Miami has told Troy it would release Williams from his Miami scholarship.
<!--startclickprintexclude-->

"We're working on it," Hazel told the newspaper.

Williams has not told Miami where he will transfer, but Troy would be allowed to give Williams a scholarship since the linebacker has received Miami's permission to transfer to the school, said Rick Korch a University of Miami spokesman.

Williams would be required to sit out the season. He would be eligible for 2007 and 2008 play. A knee injury that caused him to miss the 2004 season would allow him to apply for a waiver for 2009 play.

Troy? At first I though this must be from The Onion. But I looked it up and they are Div-1A.

Not only that, but they are apparently trying to make some sort of statement. They play in the Sun Belt but have non-conference games this year (without Willie of course) against FSU, Ga Tech and Nebraska - all on the road.

That has to be the toughest non-conf schedule of any team in the country. (The sort of schedule WVU should play if they want to be National Champs.)

If he goes to Troy, we could see him play against the Buckeyes. They make a visit in 2008.

Troy used to be Troy State, and they scored two big upsets a couple years ago, when they opened the season with wins at Marshall and at home against Missouri... i think their D-lineman won an Espy for an insane fumble return for a TD in the Mizzou game...

they moved up from 1-AA in 2001...

W. Williams won't transfer to Troy

BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN

[email protected]

Willie Williams could be a man without a school.
Troy University spokesman Ricky Hazel told The Miami Herald on Tuesday night that linebacker Willie Williams, who would be starting his sophomore season at the University of Miami had he returned to the team, will not attend the university in Alabama.
''It looks like Willie Williams is not going to make it to Troy,'' Hazel said. ``That's what coach Larry Blakeney just told me.
'He didn't give me specifics. He just said, `It doesn't look like he's coming.' ''
Hazel said Blakeney never actually spoke with Williams, and that defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell had been talking to one of Williams' family members or a representative.
''They were working on it, but I don't know if it was Willie Williams who backed off on his end or we did here,'' Hazel said. ``There was some negative reaction by the fans on our end, as you can imagine, so maybe it was both parties backing off.''
Williams, whose lengthy arrest record stirred national debate when UM accepted him in 2004, was given permission by Miami to explore transferring in quest of more playing time.
But Tennessee and Fresno State said they weren't interested, and Louisville couldn't take him because the Cardinals are on UM's schedule this season.
UM athletic director Paul Dee said by phone Tuesday night that Williams' athletic scholarship ``is annually renewable, and if we intended not to renew, the school would have had to give him notice before July 1, 2006 -- and we didn't do that. So he's entitled to an athletic scholarship.''
Classes at UM begin Aug. 23.
''If he wants to use the scholarship, he has to register and be a student,'' Dee said. ``If he doesn't, the benefits are forfeited. We would have the right not to renew again.''
Would Williams be allowed back on the team?
''The team situation is up to Coach [Larry Coker],'' Dee said.
``I doubt it, but it's up to Coach.''

Former Hurricane Williams to transfer

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Former Miami linebacker Willie Williams is transferring to Pearl River Community College in Mississippi, school officials said Monday.
Pearl River coach Tim Hatten said Williams is scheduled to arrive at the school Tuesday.

"Depending on what time he gets here, he will practice with us," Hatten told Canestime.com, which reported early Monday that Williams' transfer was imminent.

Williams asked Miami to release him from his scholarship in July, ending a saga that started in Feb. 2004 — when his record of 11 arrests was revealed publicly on the same day he signed a letter of intent with the Hurricanes.

He was allowed to enroll at Miami, provided he adhered to strict academic and off-field ground rules. But he never became a starter with the Hurricanes, prompting his search for a new school.

Pearl River won the 2004 NJCAA championship, finished last season ranked No. 3 among junior colleges, and is the top-ranked team in this year's preseason polls.
