FOX BCS Coverage...Thoughts?

rocketman

flying low
I know there's been a little discussion in the Fiesta Bowl thread, but I figured it could warrant its own thread. Of course, that's not my decision to make, so if they mods hate it, delete this post.

I think it was solid tonight. I don't think we're gonna get the buildup for the NC game that we would've got with ABC/ESPN, but the play-by-play and color commentary have been fair, unobtrusive, and at times, astute. Those are things we rarely get from the commentators on other networks nowadays.

I'll admit it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It seemed at times like they went to a commercial when something wasn't finished or when they could have shown a replay of something. A couple of the cameramen were biting on alot of the fakes as well. But overall, it wasn't too bad and they will likely have it all worked out by next Monday.

The cameramen bought on a lot of fakes, which was kind of annoying.

Otherwise, I just don't like the FOX personalities as much as the ABC/ESPN Crew. Obviously I love Herbie, and I even think Musberger's commentary is comforting in quirky-but-familiar way. I like the "studio" crew of John Saunders, Craig James, and even Flutie is growing on me.

Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, etc. are kind of meh in my opinion.

the commentators were MUCH better than the ABC/ESPN guys. charles thomas is really insightful, and it helps that alvarez is just fresh off of coaching (unlike some of the old, ESPN former coaches who can't contribute anything substantial nowadays like lee corso, bill curry...). it just seems like nowadays many of the oldtime announcers don't even bother to really research the teams in the game they're calling- they just know some basic facts that some research guy told them behind the scences. case in point- on Boise state's 2 point conversion, thomas said that he had seen them use that play for a pass against idaho during the season, and this time they did the run. guarantee you abc/espn announcers didn't really study much tape of the teams they were calling like that. the presentation was much better than i had anticipated. my only regret as some have mentioned is that the BCS games won't get the same pub being on fox that they would have gotten on abc/espn.

I agree with alot of others are saying, but I gotta focus still on the annoucing, the biggest part to the presentation, imo. I thought it was good, decent, and all, but still lacking the enthusiam that long-time college announcers bring to the table. I thought the graphics and everything else were fine. I also didn't mind the score being on the top of the screen, which I thought was going to bother me alot going into watching tonights game, but I just know I'm going to miss having Herbie and Musberger. Looks like no "Holy Buckeye" call this year... gotta wait till our next trip to the Rose.

I also do enjoy Saunders, James, and even Flutie (a huge upgrade from Aaron Taylor of last year) this year in studio as well.

Again it was a nice presentation and did surprise me a lot, but I still would much rather have the good ol' ABC guys calling the game, they are still head and shoulders above thomas, alvarez, etc, imo.

honestly, it was much better than i thought it would be... though i really don't pay as much attention to the announcers as i do to the action on the field... i watch enough football to know WTF is going on...

as someone else said, at the very least, we didn't have the 'indisputable video evidence' crap rehashed YET AGAIN when they went to replay. they simply said it was being reviewed, and described what they saw...

and the reference to the hook and ladder by Utah in the 2005 Fiesta caught me off guard... though, in retrospect, even if these ARE ordinarily NFL or MLB announcers, it pretty much stands to reason that they watch college football too... don't we all?

In all honesty, I think this helps OSU as ESPN will avoid it's annual "Current #1 vs The World" series. The last thing we needed was a week of "could this OSU team be the best ever?" "Could OSU beat Oakland?" etc.

Gives the players less to be bigheaded about, and UF less to work with for motivation as the underdog.

I was pleasantly surprised. The Fiesta Bowl coverage seemed solid, although I'll add the disclaimer that that was also their 'A' team doing the broadcast last night, so we'll see the rest of the various crews tonight and tomorrow.

Pregame was good, though I was disappointed that Barry Switzer didn't pull out any handguns and go Yosemite Sam on Jimmy Johnson. The booth crew was pretty good -- I thought Alvarez and Davis were good, though Brennaman didn't come across as very enthusiastic for much of the game.

Postgame would be my only complaint, as I CANNOT write in big enough, bold enough, or blinking all capital letters how much Chris Myers sucks at life. Exhibit A: Saying "Congratulations Ian, go propose to your girlfriend now," while Ian Johnson's girlfriend is standing right there, next to him.

Chris, you are a dipshit.

i thought that the commentating was alright last night, and got a little annoying at times. the one analyst would try to drill his point into the ground anytime he had a prediction or a play he thought should be ran, but it wasn't really that bad. it didn't take away from the game at all, so that's a good thing.

I'm a little surprised by some of the responses...the Fox coverage in general was fair but I thought Davis was absolutely awful. Part of being a great color man is knowing how much to talk. Davis felt the need to fill every second of air time with talk and even cut Alvarez off several times, which I thought was ridiculous. Plus his knowledge of the rules was pedestrian at best. I think Alavrez did a decent job, but for my money the crew that did the Rose Bowl is the best going right now. I am not a huge Musburger fan but have turned the corner on him in recent years and I really like Davie and Herbstreit working together. The only better group for me would be to sub in Ron Franklin for Musburger.
