Lunch with ex-coach Mason is exercise in levity

By C.J., Star Tribune

Former Gophers coach Glen Mason is sounding as though he'll never coach again.
"No, I don't think I will. I'm a TV announcer," said Mason, who's on the Big Ten Network. "I'm retired. Forced retired."
Puhleeze. Until the right offer is made.
Mason really enjoys broadcasting right now. "It's totally different than coaching," he said. "It's sure not the same, being on the sideline, but you don't have near as many headaches in broadcasting, and I've really been enjoying the tailgating at these great Big Ten universities after the game's over. I've always heard about it; I never partook. That's fun."

History recommends Mason
Program-reviving former coach has ties to Schemmel

By Brent Schrotenboer
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

November 29, 2008

On Feb. 11, 2003, several friends and colleagues from the University of Minnesota athletic department threw a party at the Interlachen Country Club, a plush private club in a suburb outside Minneapolis. The guest of honor was Jeff Schemmel, who was leaving his job as Minnesota's associate athletic director. Prominent among the well-wishers was Glen Mason, the Minnesota football coach.
Mason had plenty of reason to be there for Schemmel, now the athletic director at San Diego State. In December 1996, Schemmel had been there for him when a private jet carrying Mason landed in Minnesota to discuss the coaching vacancy there. At the time, Schemmel was instrumental in hiring Mason away from Kansas, a career turn that marked the beginning of a working relationship that would last through Schemmel's farewell party that day in 2003.

Former Minnesota coach Glen Mason has been publicly downplaying interest in the job, but he is said to be still under consideration. Mason's agent this week declined to confirm or deny contact with SDSU. San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz also has been contacted, sources said. He declined to comment this week when asked about it.

Sid Hartman: Mason among those shocked about Tressel
Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune
Updated: June 4, 2011
The former Gophers football coach and Ohio State player was stunned by Jim Tressel's resignation.

The resignation of Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel brought back a lot of memories to former Gophers coach Glen Mason, who was good friends with Tressel from their days together on the Buckeyes staff in the 1980s.

Mason both played and coached for the Buckeyes under the legendary Woody Hayes and was a finalist for the Ohio State job when Tressel was hired from NCAA Division I-AA Youngstown State in 2001. Mason talked about his history with Tressel in an interview on BTN this past week.

Hayes was fired when after he slugged a Clemson player on the sidelines right in front of Mason at the 1978 Gator Bowl. Tressel's departure from the Buckeyes is a lot different.

"With Jim Tressel, let's face it, during his tenure at Ohio State he's been very successful, and one that was portrayed by himself and by others that he ran a squeaky-clean program and that he was above reproach," Mason said in the televised interview. "And all of a sudden for these revelations to come out, I think most people are quite shocked.

"I think that there's still shock, and I think there's two separate schools of thought. There's some people that say, 'I can't believe that Coach Tressel did this and our program is in such a bad situation.' Then you'll find a large number of people that are still supporting Coach Tressel, thinking that he got caught in a jam here and he's trying to protect the players, trying to protect the program and he kind of took one for the team, so to speak."

He nailed it. We've been seeing that on this board for weeks.

If is true that the opinion of "Then you'll find a large number of people that are still supporting Coach Tressel, thinking that he got caught in a jam here and he's trying to protect the players, trying to protect the program and he kind of took one for the team, so to speak" then it is also true that Tress failed to protect tOSU, it's program and it's fans. He failed to back up that which he had been preaching and the same things that endeared him to the whole spectrum of the University.
Now I have to hold him I the same regard that I hold those who sold or traded away their rings and gold pants.
There is absolutely no reason to fail to uphold out valued traditions. And those are far more important to me than the players themselves

Which valued traditions did Jim Tressel fail to uphold, exactly?

What if ... Glen Mason had been hired by Ohio State?
Updated: August 10, 2011

This suggestion comes from RandBall blog commenter Jamax2: What if ... Glen Mason had been hired as Ohio State's head football coach in 2001 instead of Jim Tressel? Wow, this one should be fun.

GOOD FOR THE U?

First off, it changes the course of Gophers football completely. On the one hand, there perhaps isn't a litany of heartbreaking losses -- in particular, and as noted by others as a possible "what if" of its own, the infamous 38-35 loss to Michigan in 2003 after being up by three touchdowns in the second half at the Metrodome.
... OR MAYBE NOT?

On the other hand, Mason built up at least enough momentum with the program to make it credible again. Let's not forget this team wasn't going to bowl games until he arrived (even though, as we all know, going to a bowl game these days is about as difficult as spending more money than you intended to spend at Target Field). If a new coach takes over in 2001, do the Gophers immediately sink back to the bottom of the Big Ten instead of nestling in the middle? Do enough fans and donors tune out completely, thus erasing the chance to build TCF Bank Stadium?
MAYBE A BREAKTHROUGH

Or does a new coach take Mason's stellar offensive recruits, add some defense to the mix, and suddenly create a team that breaks through and becomes similar to Big Ten brethren Iowa and Wisconsin? And is TCF Bank Stadium now sold out every Saturday (with talks of expanding to 80,000 seats), instead of just filling up for big games and U2 concerts. Does the path still lead to Tim Brewster, then to current coach Jerry Kill? Possibly. But probably not.
WHAT ABOUT OSU?

Nationally speaking, maybe Mason's arrival at Ohio State negates the entire Buckeyes scandal that is happening right now. Would Mason have been bold or bright enough to put the kibosh on the reported tattoo and vehicle shenanigans that eventually cost Tressel his job and put OSU in hot water with the NCAA? It's entirely possible he handles things differently. But perhaps Ohio State also would have suffered the same types of maddening losses the Gophers regularly suffered in the early-to-mid-2000s.
MISSING FASHION STATEMENT

A near-certainty: Sweater vest sales in Columbus, Ohio, would not have been nearly as lucrative for the past decade.

I have been given the death stare by both Andy Geiger and the late, great, Neutron Man.

The former was deserved, the latter, not so much.
I got Mayor Coleman to flip me off at a tailgate party.. :slappy: I guess I deserved it but was surprised a playful "booooo" would get that response.
